This paper presents the design and characterization of a novel fiber optical coupler for intensity modulated fiber optical microphone. Theoretical equations for the optical power coupling are presented in detail including optical path analysis and misalignment. Various optical couplers are simulated and manufactured. A multi-mode to multi-mode coupler is characterized by static and dynamic movements of mirror on a well designed experimental stage.

For designing intensity modulation type optical microphone, the irradiance distribution which can be applied to inclined-cut geometrical configuration is suggested. The model is important in analysis of response characteristics for intensity modulation type optical microphone. To overcome low sensitivity problem in intensity modulation type optical microphone, inclined-cut optical fiber is considered here. Based on optical geometry, the inclined-cut optical fiber sensor is designed and fabricated. The experiments are carried out to evaluate sensor performance.

해양환경 규제 MEPC의 규제 강화로 인하여 더욱 정밀하고, 신뢰성을 확보한 빌지분리 센서 시스템이 필요하다. 빌지 분류기를 설계 제작하기 위해서는 기름과 물을 구별하는 정밀한 유수분리 레벨센서가 필요하다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 정전용량형 레벨센서의 특성 파악을 위해 3차원 시뮬레이션을 수행하여 특성을 파악하였으며, 이를 토대로 레벨센서의 설계시 주요한 설계인자를 추출하였다. 동작회로를 Digital 회로로 구성함으로써, 정전용량형 센서의 원천적인 기생커패시턴스 문제를 해결하였으며, 실험장치를 구성한 후 실험을 수행하였다. 실험 결과를 보면 노이즈에는 강인해졌음을 알 수 있었다. 그리고 추출한 정전용량형 레벨센서의 설계인자를 이용하여 정밀도를 향상시키기 위한 연구가 향후에 진행 될 필요성이 있다. Demand of enhanced bilge separation sensor system has been recently increased due to the severe regulation reinforcement of MEPC(Marine Environment Production Committee). Up to date bilge separation sensor has to be extremely accurate and highly reliable. To design and build such a bilge separator. a precise oily water separation level sensor that distinguishes oil from water is critical. Three dimensional simulations have been carried out to figure out the characteristics of capacitive level sensors, which grounds the finding of the parameters required to design the sensors. The parasitic capacitance problem which is inherent to capacitive level sensors has been taken care of. This paper concludes with the future research direction that can be pursued with the newly defined parameters of the capacitive level sensors.

Purpose: The frequency of computerized tomography (CT) for diagnosing of atypical acute appendicitis, as ordered by emergency physicians, was noted. According to abdominal CT findings, the severity of acute appendicitis is divided into six grades that are used for diagnosis and treatment. However, whether or not the laboratory and clinical findings of atypical acute appendicitis have a relation to the grading of abdominal CT scans is unknown. This study was performed to evaluate the correlation between CT grades and symptoms, signs and operative and pathologic findings of atypical acute appendicitis. Methods: This study included 412 patients who were admitted and underwent an appendectomy from January 2004 to June 2005. An abdominal and pelvic CT scan was performed in 114 patients who had atypical presentations in the emergency room. The abdominal and pelvic CT scales were correlated with clinical signs, laboratory findings, and pathology reports. The CT scale for appendicitis is a six-grade scale from normal (grade 0) to periappendiceal abscess (grade 5). Results: Sixty-six patients were male and 48 were female, and the mean age was 50.7±22.0 years old. On the abdominal CT, grade 0 (normal) was 3 patients (2.6%), grade 1 (probable appendicitis) 5 (4.4%), grade 2 (appendicitis) 17 (14.8%), grade 3 (appendicitis with periappendicitis) 47 (40.9%), grade 4 (appendicitis with rupture) 30 (26.1%), and grade 5 (complicated appendicitis) 12 (10.4%). There was no significant difference between CT grades and either local tenderness or rebound tenderness in the right lower quadrant abdomen (p>0.296). However increased body temperature correlated with higher CT grades (p=0.01). There were significant differences in the neutrophil count (p<0.001), but not the white blood cell count (p=0.493). The severity of pathology of acute appendicitis correlated with the CT grade (R=0.468, p=0.004). Conclusion: There was no significant correlation of local and rebound tenderness on right lower quadrant abdomen and of white blood cell count with CT grading in appendicitis, but there was a high correlation of body temperature and of neutrophil counts with the CT grades of appendicitis for patients with atypical appendicitis. The CT grades of appendicitis also correlated with the pathology.

To examine the possibility of cultivation of winter fodder crops at Saemangeum reclaimed land, barley, rye, wheat, triticale, and oat were cultivated under the various ranges of saline soils from autumn 2009 to the spring 2011, and their growth and yields were evaluated. emergence and seedling stand rate were 84 and 79% at non-salinity soil plot, 64 to 73% at 0.2% saline soil plots, 40 to 52% at 0.3% saline soil plots, and 22 to 37% at 0.4% saline soil plot, respectively. those of rye, wheat, triticale, and barely were similar, however those of oats were relatively low. Yields of fresh and dry matter were 66 to 77% level at 0.2% saline soil plot and 30 to 61 % level at over 0.3% saline soil plots compared with the yields at non-saline soil plot. Fresh matter were high in order of rye>wheat>barely>triticale>oat. and dry matter were high in order of wheat>rye=barley>tricale>oat. Thus, considering these results, Soil salinity below 0.2% were available to cultivation of winter fodder corps and rye, wheat, barely and triticale were available crops in Saemangeum recalimed land.
