Labor Market Institutions and Wage-led Growth: A Panel Cointegration Approach

Hochul Shin 서울대학교 경제연구소 2019 Seoul journal of economics Vol.32 No.2

This study analyzes the long-term effect of labor market institutions, such as minimum wage and union density, on inequality, investment, growth, and consumption, by using data of the member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development since the 1970s. Labor market institution variables are used to test arguments on wage-led growth theory. Panel cointegration approach was used to investigate the long-term effect of these variables. Results of panel cointegration test show that variables of labor market institutions are not robustly correlated to macroeconomic outcomes in the long run. This condition is not in accordance with the findings of the proponents and critics of wage-led growth. No robust evidence exists to show that increasing minimum wage and union density, which are representative policies for wage-led growth, are correlated to inequality, labor income share, consumption, investment, or growth in the long run. Estimation results of this study suggest that the empirical basis of support and criticism for wage-led growth theory is weak.

      • PILOT PLANT TEST OF PRETREATMENT PROCESS FOR LANDFILL GAS UTILIZATION

        ( Hochul Shin ),( Jinwon Park ) 한국폐기물자원순환학회 2002 APLAS Vol.2002 No.1

Landfill gas (LFG) consists of methane and carbon dioxide with numerous organic compounds such as aromatics, chlorinated compounds, and sulfurs. The LFG utilization as the energy source has become the highlight subject in terms of solving both the renewable energy usage and environmental pollution. In order to exploit the LFG effectively and minimize the side effects, it is crucial to eliminate the trace components in raw LFG In this paper, the removal characteristics of the pilot plant test using raw LFG were studied in Sudokwon landfill site in Korea. We used pretreatment process including cyclone-type dehydrator, compressor, and adsorption towers packed with molecular sieve and activated carbon. Total operation time was 373 hours and total amounts of LFG was about 5600 Nm3 on the operation conditions (flow rate: 1.5土0.1 m3/hr, operation pressure: 10土0.5 kgf/cm2). The relative humidity of pretreated LFG was 0.8-3.3%, and the moisture removal efficiency was above 98% during 373 hours. Aromatics and chlorinated compounds were completely adsorbed onto the activated carbon tower by 300 hours. When it passed by about 120 hours, 1% of hydrogen sulfide concentration was detected in the effluent stream. 90% of input concentration emitted at the operation time of 373 hours. This field test of LFG pretreatment process in pilot plant scale demonstrates the application to medium-Btu usage and high-Btu direct usage through other gas fuel mixing system.

HoChul Shin,Yong-San Yoon 한국과학기술원 인간친화 복지 로봇 시스템 연구센터 2004 International Journal of Assistive Robotics and Me Vol.5 No.1

Total arthroplasty is one of the most active applications of robotic surgery in orthopedics. The main job of orthopedic surgical robot is bone cutting with milling tools. A reliable method for predicting milling forces may allow us to design more intelligent and effective systems. In this study, we have developed a prediction models for milling forces during the orthopedic surgery by expanding the orthogonal bone-cutting model. To verify the model, we milled fresh bovine bones with a medical round bur and measured cutting forces in various cutting conditions. The developed model can predict milling forces about cutting depth below 0.5㎜ with a feedrate 2~9.8㎜/s, and 0~10% mean error and 13~25% of standard deviation. This model can be applied as a control algorithm of orthopedic robotic surgery, and also as a safety checking system. The model can be interpreted as general design criteria for new robotic system.
