Ghostly Writing: Narrative Structure in J.M. Coetzee's Foe

        Youngnam Cha 21세기영어영문학회 2008 영어영문학21 Vol.21 No.1

The paper provides an in depth of examination of the narrative structure of J. M. Coetzee's Foe. First of all, Coetzee writes back to Robinson Crusoe, written by a British author, Daniel Defoe in the eighteenth century. In writing back to Robinson Crusoe, Foe appropriates Defoe's rhetorical devices such as an autobiographical element, journal and memoir. The appropriation is shown from the section one to the section three. Most significantly, the appropriation aims at (de)constructing the reliability of the novel in the early eighteenth century. It is, however, notable that the strategy of writing-back in Foe is not that simple. That is to say, Coetzee essentially questions the reliability of Robinson Crusoe within the postcolonial context. The subversion of the reliability begins with the third person female narrator, Susan Barton, instead of the first person narrator, Robinson Crusoe in Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. Under the gaze of Susan Barton, the reader finds that Defoe's rhetorical devices are not applied to the racial other, Friday. By pointing out the problematic representation of Friday, Foe maximizes the subversive effect of the writing-back strategy. In particular, Coetzee's idea on representing the other goes a step further. For him, Susan Barton also cannot speak of the other as well as for the other. The disappearance of the reliable narrator, Susan, in the last section reveals the radical idea of Coetzee on writing and representation. The ghostly voice of the last section questions the reliability and narrative of Susan Barton. The ghostly narrator clearly tells that any narratorial subject cannot be free from the reliability in terms of representing the other. In sum, J. M. Coetzee's Foe takes advantage of the effect of the appropriation and subversion as a postmodern parody of Robinson Crusoe. And at the same time, the narrative structure of Foe offers the reader a chance of reconsidering its textual limitation as well as a counter-discourse to the racial contract embedded in colonial narratives.

        Youngnam Cha,Deuksu Park J-INSTITUTE 2021 International Journal of Martial Arts Vol.6 No.3

Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the status of injuries by each detailed sport of Taekwondo and provide the basic data for developing an injuries prevention program appropriate for the characteristics of each sport. Method: A total of 110 college and university Taekwondo athletes were targeted, including 35 for competition, 33 for poomsae, and 42 for demonstration, respectively, and the status of injuries and treatment methods were surveyed and analyzed. The results are as follows. Results: First, as for the injuries related experiences, 82.4% of those for competition, 69.7% of those for poomsae, and 78% of those for demonstration turned out to have had relevant experiences, and as for the sur-gery related experiences by each sport, those for competition were 44.1%, those for poomsae were 15.2%, and those for demonstration were 21.4%, respectively. Second, as a result of analyzing the their recovery period, those for sparing were 28.6% and those for demonstration were 42.9% responding with less than 4 weeks at the most. Meanwhile, those for poomsae demonstrated the highest rate of 36.4% for over 6 months. Third, as a result of analyzing the situation of injuries, those for competition were 80%, those for poomsae were 78.8%, and those for demonstration were 63.4%, responding that they have suffered most injuries during this sport. Fourth, as a result of analyzing the causes of injuries, 24% of those for competition responded with collision or fall the most. 21.7% of those for poomsae and 25% of those for demonstration responded fatigue and overwork as the causes of inju-ries the most. Fifth, as a result of analyzing the timing of injuries, 36.8% of those for competition, 42.6% of those for poomsae, and 38.4% of those for demonstration responded that they have suffered the most injuries during the winter. Sixth, as a result of analyzing the types of injuries, sprains and fractures accounted for the most with 17.7%, respectively, while 18.9% of those for poomsae and 25.2% of those for for demonstration responded the most with sprain. Seventh, as a result of analyzing the parts of injuries, 28.8% of those for competition, 34.5% of those for poomsae, and 34.5% of those for demonstration responded the most with lower body injuries. Lastly, as a result of analyzing the method of handling injuries, 24.7% of those for competition, 19.6% of those for poomsae, and 19.9% of those for demonstration responded the most with treatment after visiting an oriental medicine clinic. Conclusion: Gathering which, given the high frequency of sports injuries for the athletes, conditioning is need-ed, and it is also determined that the measures for maintaining body temperature and preventing injuries are required during the winter exercises. Furthermore, given the characteristics of Taekwondo, the frequency of use of the lower body is quite high, and as it is evident that the lower body injuries are prevalent, and since there are many sprains and fractures, in line with the causes and types of such injuries, systematic training methods for improving the athletes performance and preventing injuries, and such preventive methods as taping, braces, and warm-up exercises would likely be required.

Effects of Taekwondo Breaking Player s Self-Management on Stress and Performance

        Hochul Shin,Youngnam Cha J-INSTITUTE 2022 International Journal of Martial Arts Vol.7 No.1

Purpose: This study is meaningful in analyzing in detail how the self-management of demon-stration members of college Taekwondo demonstration events affects their stress and perfor-mance. In addition, this is to provide basic data for follow-up studies that help improve performance and prescribe for exercise stress based on thorough self-management of Taekwondo demonstration team members. Method: For this study, a survey was conducted on college Taekwondo demonstration mem-bers for about 4 months. The purpose and intent of the study were fully explained to the coaches of each team, and consent was sought. This researcher and research assistant visited the training site of Taekwondo demonstration teams and conducted a survey. A survey was con-ducted after explaining the preparation method, purpose, and intent of the study to the participants who voluntarily participated in this study. Results: As a result of a regression analysis on the effect of self-management of college Taekwondo demonstration members on performance, it was found that body management, in-terpersonal management, training management, and mental management, which are sub-Factor s of self-management, were not statistically significant. In addition, the regression model shows a value of F from p<.001 to .325 and R²=.012 for the regression equation, showing 1.2% ex-planatory power of the total variance. Conclusion: As a result of examining the relationship between exercise stress and self-management of members of the college Taekwondo demonstration team, it was found that men-tal management had an effect on unfair behavior among sub-Factor s of exercise stress. For time constraints, physical and mental management had an effect. It was found that mental management had an effect on functional discontent and career concern. Second, it was found that all Factor s did not affect the effect of self-management of college Taekwondo demonstra-tion members on performance. Third, it was found that all Factor s did not affect the effect of the exercise stress of college Taekwondo demonstration members on their performance.

      • Effects of Alanine and Glutamine on Alcohol Oxidation and Urea Nitrogen Production in Perfused Rat Liver

Yim, Jungeun,Chyun, Jonghee,Cha, Youngnam The Korean Nutrition Society 2003 Nutritional Sciences Vol.6 No.4

Most of the ethyl alcohol consumed by humans is oxidized to acetaldehyde in the liver by the cytoplasmic alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) system. For this ADH-catalyzed oxidation of alcohol, $NAD^+$ is required as the coenzyme and $NAD^+$becomes reduced to NADH. As the $NAD^+$becomes depleted and NADH accumulates, alcohol oxidation is reduced. For continued alcohol oxidation, the accumulated NADH must be quickly reoxidized to $NAD^+$, and it is this reoxidation of NADH to $NAD^+$that is known to be the rate-limiting step in the overall oxidation rate of alcohol The reoxidation of NADH to $NAD^+$is catalyzed by lactate dehydrogenase in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes, with pyruvate being utilized as the substrate. The pyruvate may be supplied from alanine as a result of amino acid metabolism via the urea cycle. Also, glutamine is thought to help with the supply of pyruvate indirectly, and to activate the urea cycle by producing $NH_3$. Thus, in the present study, we have examined the effects of alanine and glutamine on the alcohol oxidation rate. We utilized isolated perfused liver tissue in a system where media containing alanine and glutamine was circulated. Our results showed that when alanine (5.0mM) was added to the glucose-free infusion media, the alcohol oxidation rate was increased by 130%. Furthermore, when both glutamine and alanine were added together to the infusion media, the alcohol oxidation rate increased by as much as 190%, and the rate of urea nitrogen production increased by up to 200%. The addition of glutamine (5.0mM) alone to the infusion media did not accelerate the alcohol oxidation rate. The increases in the rates of alcohol oxidation and urea nitrogen production through the addition of alanine and glutamine indicate that these amino acids have contributed to the enhanced supply of pyruvate through the urea cycle. Based on these results, it is concluded that the dietary supplementation of alanine and glutamine could contribute to increased alcohol detoxification through the urea cycle, by enhancing the supply of pyruvate and $NAD^+$to ensure accelerated rates of alcohol oxidation.
