Ensuring sufficient supplies of clean, economic and acceptable energy is a critical global challenge for the 21st century. There seems little alternative to a greatly expanded role for nuclear power, but implementation of this option will depend on ensuring that all resulting wastes can be disposed of safely. Although there is a consensus on the fundamental feasibility of such disposal by experts in the field, concepts have to be developed to make them more practical to implement and, in particular, more acceptable to key stakeholders. By considering global trends and using illustrative examples from Japan, key areas for future R&D are identified and potential areas where the synergies of international collaboration would be beneficial are highlighted.

In this study, we establish a thin-layer chromatography (TLC) immunostaining method for detecting starfish gangliosides. A new monoclonal antibody (MAb) against AG-2, the major gangliosides molecular species of Acanthaster planci, was produced by fusing hybridoma with splenocytes immunized to liposomal AG-2. BALB/c male mice were injected with liposomal AG-2 antigen, and immunized. Their splenocytos were isolated and fused with hypoxanthine-aminopterine-thimidine (HAT)-sensitive mouse myeloma cells. Hybridomas producing MAb reactive to AG-2 were cloned using the limited dilution method. Established hybridomas were cultured in eRDF medium. Crude MAb produced from clone 8D4 was purified with a magnesium pyrophosphate column. Enzyme immunoassay and TLC immunostaining of AG-2 were performed using the purified MAb. Structurally related gangliosides did not cross-react with anti-AG-2 antibodies. The detection limit of TLC immunostaining was 50 ng of AG-2. The newly established immunostaining method was further developed for detecting AG-2 distribution and qualitative analysis in tissues and/or organs. Our results show that the majority of AG-2 is present in the stomach of male A. planci, while AG-2 is distributed not only in the stomach but also in the the pyloric caeca of female A. planci.

Objective: In Japan, perioperative prophylaxis of pulmonar y embolism (PE) in gynecologiccancer patients with preoperative asymptomatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) has notbeen well established yet. The GOTIC-VTE trial was a prospective, multi-center, single-armclinical trial to investigate the prevention of postoperative symptomatic PE onset by seamlessanticoagulant therapy from the preoperative period to 4 weeks after surger y instead of usingintermittent pneumatic compression. Methods: Anticoagulant therapy was started immediately after asymptomatic VTE diagnosisand stopped preoperatively according to the rules of each institution. Unfractionatedheparin administration was resumed within 12 hours postoperatively, and this was followedby the switch to low-molecular-weight heparin and subsequently, edoxaban; this cycle wascontinued for 28 days. Primar y outcome was the occurrence of symptomatic PE in 28 dayspostoperatively. Secondar y outcomes were the incidence of VTE-related events in 28 days and6 months postoperatively and protocol-related adverse events. Results: Between Februar y 2018 and September 2020, 99 patients were enrolled; of these, 82 patients were assessed as the full analysis set, including 58 for ovarian cancer, fallopian tube,or peritoneal cancer; 21 for endometrial cancer; and 3 for cer vical cancer. No symptomatic PEwas obser ved within 28 days postoperatively; two patients had bleeding events (major bleedingand clinically relevant nonmajor bleeding) and three had grade 3 adverse events (increasedalanine transaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, or gamma-glutamyl transferase). Conclusion: The multifaceted perioperative management for gynecologic malignancies withasymptomatic VTE effectively prevented postoperative symptomatic PE. Rain attenuation characteristics of the Ku-band up-link satellite signals are presented for the past four years of 2003-2006 in Japan and Indonesia, using Japan’ domestic communication satellite Superbird C that connects Research Institute for Sustainable Humanosphere of Kyoto University (RISH) to Equatorial Atmosphere Radar Observatory (EAR). Compared with the rainfall rates with the same time percentages, equivalent path lengths of the satellite signal against the rain area are shown to be reduced down to 2 km at EAR, which is remarkably shorter than those at RISH in Japan. The almost same attenuation values and annual statistics are, however, obtained from the X-band radar observations simultaneously conducted at EAR. This suggests that long-term radar observations of convective clouds are effective to estimate rain attenuation statistics of the satellite signals in the tropical regions.

Complex anatomical restrictions can lead to further interventions after the emergence of a postoperative aneurysm enlargement in thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for a thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA). A 75-year-old male underwent a TEVAR for a Crawford extent I TAAA. The main device and the distal extension were placed using a fenestrated technique, outside of the instructions for use. The aneurysm expanded because of an endoleak and stent graft migration; and was surgically repaired by fully salvaging the previous endografts 38 months after the first TEVAR. However, the distal extension, which was the proximal anastomosis site with a prosthetic graft, became completely dislocated from the main device eight months after the open surgical conversion, resulting again in the enlargement of the aneurysm. An additional TEVAR was successfully performed to correct the dislocated stent graft. An appropriate treatment strategy is crucial to prevent multiple reinterventions for TAAA with complex anatomical restrictions.
