Fractured styloid process masquerading as neck pain: Cone-beam computed tomography investigation and review of the literature

Khan, Hassan M.,Fraser, Andrew D.,Daws, Steven,Thoppay, Jaisri,Mupparapu, Mel Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology 2018 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.48 No.1

Historically, Eagle syndrome is a term that has been used to describe radiating pain in the orofacial region, foreign body sensation, and/or dysphagia due to a unilateral or bilateral elongated styloid process impinging upon the tonsillar region. Because elongated styloid processes-with or without associated Eagle syndrome-can present with various symptoms and radiographic findings, it can be challenging for healthcare practitioners to formulate an accurate diagnosis. Abnormal styloid anatomy can lead to a multitude of symptoms, including chronic orofacial/neck pain, thus masquerading as more commonly diagnosed conditions. In this report, we describe a patient who presented to our department with styloid process elongation and fracture. A careful history, physical examination, and a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) investigation led to the diagnosis. The patient was then referred for appropriate care. This case report demonstrates the utilization of CBCT in differentiating a fracture site from a pseudo-joint that might mimic a fracture.

Outcomes of Portosystemic Shunts in Children with and without Liver Transplantation

        Hamza Hassan Khan,Stuart S. Kaufman,Nada A. Yazigi,Khalid M. Khan 대한소아소화기영양학회 2024 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.27 No.1

Purpose: Limited data exist regarding outcome and morbidity associated with portosystemic shunts in the pediatric transplant population. Our study assesses the outcomes of pediatric patients who underwent a portosystemic shunt procedure, both with and without liver transplantation (LT). Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed the medical records of pediatric patients aged 0–19 years who underwent shunt placement between 2003 and 2017 at a tertiary care center. The analysis included cases of shunt placement with or without LT. Results: A total of 13 pediatric patients were included in the study with median age of 8.8 years. Among the cases, 11 out of 13 (84.6%) underwent splenorenal shunt, 1 (7.7%) underwent a mesocaval shunt, and another 1 (7.7%) underwent a Modified Rex (mesoportal) shunt. Additionally, 5 out of 13 (38.5%) patients had LT, with 4 out of 5 (80.0%) receiving the transplant before shunt placement, and 1 out of 5 (20.0%) receiving it after shunt placement. Gastrointestinal bleeding resulting from portal hypertension was the indication in all cases. A total of 10 complications were reported in 5 patients; the most common complication was anemia in 3 (23.1%) patients. At the most recent follow-up visit, the shunts were functional without encephalopathy, and no deaths were reported. Conclusion: Shunt placement plays a crucial role in the management of patients with portal hypertension. Our study demonstrates favorable long-term outcomes in pediatric patients who underwent shunt placement. Long term shunt outcomes were similar and unremarkable in patients with LT and without LT.

Structural and magnetic studies on Zr doped ZnO diluted magnetic semiconductor

        G. Murtaza,R. Ahmad,M.S. Rashid,M. Hassan,A. Hussnain,Muhammad Azhar Khan,M. Ehsan ul Haq,M.A. Shafique,S. Riaz 한국물리학회 2014 Current Applied Physics Vol.14 No.2

In this study, Zirconium doped Zn1xZrxO (with x ¼ 0.00e0.10) samples have been prepared by formal solid-state reaction technique. The Zr doped ZnO samples annealed at 1100 C and characterized by different characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The Xray diffraction (XRD) used to study the structural properties. XRD pattern showed that lattice parameters, “a”, “c”, unit cell volume and ZneO bond length increase with doping content (x 0.04) where as these decrease with x > 0.04. On the other hand, reverse trend observed with lattice distortion. The crystallite size decreases with increasing doping content of Zr. FTIR employed to investigate functional chemical bonding properties of different elements and compounds present in materials. The low, medium and high frequency absorption bands observed at 630, 1500 and 3435 cm1, which were the common features of ZneO, HeOeH and OeH bond respectively. SEM used to study surface morphology and measured grain size of specimen. The surface becomes dense and grain size decreases with increasing degree of Zr contents. The SEM micrograph also shows the presence of spherical micro size particles and formation of pores in samples. Magnetic properties were obtained using VSM. The samples exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism. The magnetic hysteresis loops show variation in the value of magnetic parameter. The saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercivity (Hc) decrease, while remanence magnetization (Mr) shows gradually increasing trend with Zr content. VSM measurement reveals that sample Zn0.96Zr0.4O show better result as compared to x ¼ 0.06e0.10.

Influence of Cr incorporation on structural, dielectric and optical properties of ZnO nanoparticles

        M. Mehedi Hassan,Wasi Khan,Ameer Azam,A. H. Naqvi 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.21 No.1

This study demonstrated the effect of Cr doping on structural, dielectric and optical behavior of ZnOnanoparticles synthesized through sol–gel method. Characteristic investigations have been carried outby X-ray diffraction, Field emission scanning electron microscope, Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and Transmission electron microscope. The results confirmed the formation of nanoparticles inpolycrystalline single phase with hexagonal wurtzite structure. The crystallite size has been found tovary around 20 nm. Dielectric studies were carried out by Impedance spectroscopy. The decrease effectof dielectric parameters with increase in dopant has been explained on the basis of Maxwell–Wagnermodel and Koops phenomenological theory. The impedance analysis suggested that the contribution ofgrain boundaries is dominating over grain contribution. A red shift in UV–vis spectra signified that bandgap can be tuned by Cr doping from 3.32 to 3.22 eV because of the s–d and p–d exchange interactions.

Synthesis and biological evaluation of pyrazole chalcones and derived bipyrazoles as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant agents

        Hassan M. Faidallah,Sherif A. F. Rostom,Khalid A. Khan 대한약학회 2015 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.38 No.2

A series of bipyrazoles functionalized withsulfonamide, N1,N3-disubstituted sulfonylurea, sulfonylthioureapharmacophores, and some derived thiazolidinoneand thiazoline ring systems were synthesized. Thestructures of the newly synthesized compounds were substantiatedby analytical and diverse spectroscopic data. Theanti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity of some of thenewly synthesized compounds were tested and the resultsreveled that compounds 14, 16, 20, 24 and 25 proved to bethe most active anti-inflammatory agents according to theCarrageenan-induced rat paw edema bioassay. Whereas, the analogs 14, 16 and 24 were able to exhibit good tomoderate antioxidant activity in the DPPH radical-scavengingassay. Hence, compounds 14, 16 and 24 can beconsidered as lead structures for dual anti-inflammatoryand antioxidant activities.

Implications of molecular diversity of chitin and its derivatives

        Khan, F. I.,Rahman, S.,Queen, A.,Ahamad, S.,Ali, S.,Kim, J.,Hassan, M. I. Springer International 2017 Applied microbiology and biotechnology Vol.101 No.9

<P>Chitin is a long unbranched polysaccharide, made up of beta-1,4-linked N-acetylglucosamine which forms crystalline fiber-like structure. It is present in the fungal cell walls, insect and crustacean cuticles, nematode eggshells, and protozoa cyst. We provide a critical appraisal on the chemical modifications of chitin and its derivatives in the context of their improved efficacy in medical applications without any side effect. Recent advancement in nanobiotechnology has helped to synthesize several chitin derivatives having significant biological applications. Here, we discuss the molecular diversity of chitin and its applications in enzyme immobilization, wound healing, packaging material, controlled drug release, biomedical imaging, gene therapy, agriculture, biosensor, and cosmetics. Also, we highlighted chitin and its derivatives as an antioxidant, antimicrobial agent, anticoagulant material, food additive, and hypocholesterolemic agent. We envisage that chitin and chitosan-based nanomaterials with their potential applications would augment nanobiotechnology and biomedical industries.</P>

Solitary Wave Solutions for MHD Flow of Viscous Fluid through Convergent or Divergent Channel

        Kamran Ayub,M. Yaqub Khan,Qazi Mahmood-Ul-Hassan,Jamshad Ahmed 한국자기학회 2017 Journal of Magnetics Vol.22 No.3

Nonlinear mathematical problems and their solutions are of great importance in solitary waves. In soliton theory, an efficient tool to attain various type of soliton solutions is the Exp-function technique. This paper aims at finding soliton wave solutions of a viscous incompressible fluid through convergent or divergent channel in the existence of a magnetic field. By an appropriate use of local similarity transformation we obtained an ordinary differential equation. It is solved by Exp-function technique. It is observed that under discussion technique is user friendly that requires minimum computational work. Also we can extend it for physical problems of different nature as well.
