Spatial Filtering for Robust Myoelectric Control

<P>Pattern recognition techniques have been applied to extract information from electromyographic (EMG) signals that can be used to control electrical powered hand prostheses. In this paper, optimized spatial filters that enhance separation properties of EMG signals are investigated. In particular, different multiclass extensions of the common spatial patterns algorithm are applied to high-density surface EMG signals acquired from the forearms of ten healthy subjects. Visualization of the obtained filter coefficients provides insight into the physiology of the muscles related to the performed contractions. The CSP methods are compared with a commonly used pattern recognition approach in a six-class classification task. Cross-validation results show a significant improvement in performance and a higher robustness against noise than commonly used pattern recognition methods.</P>
No Concentration Decrease of House Dust Mite Allergens With Rising Altitude in Alpine Regions

Purpose: Several studies over the past 4 decades have indicated a significant reduction in house dust mite (HDM) and HDM allergen concentration in areas higher than 1,500 m above sea level. These have served as basis of allergen avoidance therapies for HDM allergy and asthma. However, modern construction techniques used in the insulation, heating, and glazing of buildings as well as global warming have changed the environmental parameters for HDM living conditions. The present study revisits the paradigm of decreasing HDM allergen concentrations with increasing altitude in the alpine region of Germany and Austria. Methods: A total of 122 dust samples from different abodes (hotels, privates and mountain huts) at different altitudes (400-2,600 m) were taken, and concentrations of HDM allergens were analyzed. Humidity and temperature conditions, and numerous indoor environmental parameters such as fine dust, type of flooring, age of building, and frequency of cleaning were determined. Results: HDM allergen concentrations did not significantly change with increasing altitude or relative humidity. At the level of indoor parameters, correlations could be found for different flooring types and the concentration of HDM allergens. Conclusions: In contrast to the widespread view of the relationship between altitude and HDM allergen concentrations, clinically relevant concentrations of HDM allergens could be detected in high-lying alpine regions in Austria and Germany. These results indicate that improvement in conditions of asthmatic patients sensitized against HDMs during a stay at high altitude can no longer be ascribed to decreased levels of HDM allergens, instead, other mechanisms may trigger the beneficial effect.

<P>Fundamental changes over time of surface EMG signal characteristics are a challenge for myocontrol algorithms controlling prosthetic devices. These changes are generally caused by electrode shifts after donning and doffing, sweating, additional weight or varying arm positions, which results in a change of the signal distribution-a scenario often referred to as covariate shift. A substantial decrease in classification accuracy due to these factors hinders the possibility to directly translate EMG signals into accurate myoelectric control patterns outside laboratory conditions. To overcome this limitation, we propose the use of supervised adaptation methods. The approach is based on adapting a trained classifier using a small calibration set only, which incorporates the relevant aspects of the nonstationarities, but requires only less than 1 min of data recording. The method was tested first through an offline analysis on signals acquired across 5 days from seven able-bodied individuals and four amputees. Moreover, we also conducted a three day online experiment on eight able-bodied individuals and one amputee, assessing user performance and user-ratings of the controllability. Across different testing days, both offline and online performance improved significantly when shrinking the training model parameters by a given estimator towards the calibration set parameters. In the offline data analysis, the classification accuracy remained above 92% over five days with the proposed approach, whereas it decreased to 75% without adaptation. Similarly, in the online study, with the proposed approach the performance increased by 25% compared to a test without adaptation. These results indicate that the proposed methodology can contribute to improve robustness of myoelectric pattern recognition methods in daily life applications.</P>

The purpose of this paper is to analyze and illustrate Amazon’s distribution strategy and its success. This paper examines Amazon’s distribution strategy to demonstrate the importance of distribution strategy to the success and sustainability of its organization. The analysis indicates that the distribution strategy, including technology, shipping, and distribution infrastructure, is the most vital factor for the success of Amazon. Recognizing the importance of distribution systems, constantly innovating convenient and on-time delivery methods, and taking control of inventory and shipping activities have separated Amazon from its competitors and led Amazon to establish many different types of fulfillment facilities all over the world. Given Amazon’s continued growth that came with its constant strive for delivery and cost efficiency and customer satisfaction, it was inevitable that Amazon would eventually venture into the actual shipping business and emerge as the competitor of the traditionally well-known shipping companies such as DHL, FedEx, and UPS. The previous and current Amazon’s distribution strategies demonstrate that Amazon will continue to focus on developing and implementing new and creative distribution strategies to separate itself from the rest of the retail and e-businesses.

This study is to make clear and identify the meaning of Honglk-Ingan. In this study, all the literatures an the history of Tankun which include the word of HongIk-Ingan were divided into three patterns: the literatures of Confucian or toadyism, that of Buddhism, and that of nationalism. In which I dealed with the six literatures and divided it as three types. Six literatures are Taepaek-Ilsa, Samsungki vol. Ⅱ, Samkuk-Yusa, Samsungki vol. Ⅰ, Jewang-Woonki, and a true record of the Yi dynasty's King Sejong. Especially, the first three literatures have a strong resemblance even though the two are the literatures of nationalism and the other one is that of Buddhism. As a conclusion, I insist that Honglk-Ingan means the ruling philosophy of Hahn-In and Hahn-Woong not of Tangun. And it is also the spirit of loving all human beings and the actural practice of education from generation to generation.
