Vollenhovia emeryi ant is distinguished by its wing morphology; short winged (SW) and long winged (LW). Its reproduction shows a bizarre genetic caste system distinct from other social hymenopteran insects. Unfertilized eggs undergo genome duplication and develop into clonal gynes. Fertilized eggs develop either into workers or males. The fate of the fertilized eggs is determined whether maternal genome loss (MGL) takes place after fertilization. Eggs with MGL become haploid males with only paternal half of the genome. Without MGL, the eggs become workers with maternal and paternal half of the genome. In this research, we analysed 5 nuclear genes of SW and LW individual ants. Among them, two genes from an SW male are identical to those of LW, and one gene from the SW male seems a variant of LW. The result indicates that SW males are derived from LW colonies. From the genetic relatedness point of view individuals in the same castes are genetically identical. On the other hand, between workers and two reproductives, the relatedness is asymmetrical and there is even no gene sharing between gynes and males. The conventional genetic relatedness by Hamilton is revised under this condition.
유리 단자용 무연(Pb-free)솔더 접합 공정 최적화 연구

As automotive industry faces fierce competition, developed countries make use of the ‘Environment-friendly’ issue as a trade barrier. Especially the European Union (EU) reinforced ELV (End of the Life Vehicle) regulation from January 1, 2013 and Korean government also reinforced ‘Act On The Resource Circulation Of Electrical And Electronic Equipment And Vehicle’ from July 1, 2013. Therefore it is not allowed to use Lead (Pb) for glass solder. In order to satisfy the regulation, the leaded solder in automotive glass should be replaced by lead-free solder. Generally, it is easily assumed that there is no problem with changing only solder material to Lead(Pb)-free solder. However, due to the unique property of the glass soldering, the solder material and soldering process should be changed at the same time. We investigated the effect of the flux, soldering temperature to find the best soldering condition which shows good bonding strength between glass and glass terminal. As a result of tying various the soldering conditions, temperature and flux, we finally found out the optimal condition enough to satisfy the automotive test standard.
유리단자용 무연(Pb-Free) 솔더 소재 및 공정 개발

A new lead(Pb)-free solder material for automotive glass terminals is developed. In order to satisfy the regulation of EU ELV(End of Life Vehicle), the leaded solder in automotive glass should be replaced by lead-free solder. However, due to the unique property of the glass, it is easily broken with general electric lead-free solder material. As a result of the trying 120 types of solder material, we finally developed the excellent lead-free solder composition which has minimum Indium(In) contents. It is the optimized solder material against the wide range of thermal change environment. There is no glass crack with the developed lead-free solder. And it also shows good bonding strength enough to satisfy the automotive test standard.
Wolbachia infection polymorphism and wing morphology in Vollenhovia emeryi chosenica (Wheeler)

Vollenhovia emeryi chosenica (Wheeler) (Hymenoptera: Myrmicinae) is an ant species frequently found in forests. In nature, two phenotypically distinct forms are found e.g. long winged and short winged. Unlike other hymenopteran insects, the ant is unique in its mode of reproduction. In this species, queens are clonally reproduced from unfertilized eggs. On the other hand, workers develop from fertilized eggs. Strikingly, haploid males are reproduced from fertilized eggs after destroying the maternal half of the genome e.g. maternal genome loss (MGL) consequently only with the paternal half of the genome. We collected the ant colonies nationwide in 2011. In this study, we demonstrate that the ant is infected with Wolbachia, the bacterial reproductive manipulator in various insects. Interestingly, only the long winged morphs seem to be infected. Furthermore, most colonies are mulitple-infected except two colonies collected from Chuncheon and Mt. Deogyu. We will discuss potential interactions among the Wolbachia infection polymorphism and wing morphology, and evolution of clonal reproduction and MGL.
A Method for Anisotropic Spatial Smoothing of Functional Magnetic Resonance Images

Spatial smoothing using isotropic Gaussian kernels removes noise, reduces spatial resolution, and increases the partial volume effect of functional magnetic resonance images (fMRI), thereby reducing statistical power. To minimize these limitations, we propose a novel anisotropic smoothing method for fMRI data that is based on a classical anisotropic smoothing technique, which requires an anisotropic tensor in the volumetric space. To extract anisotropic tensor for each voxel of the functional data, the intensity gradient was first derived using the distance transformation of the segmented grey matter of the fMRI-coregistered T1-weighted image. The intensity gradient was then used to determine the anisotropic kernel for smoothing at each voxel of the fMRI data. Performance evaluations on both real and simulated data showed that this novel technique improved both statistical power and localization on the grey matter cortex. The advantages of the proposed method are that it works on the volume space and does not require any sophisticated calculations of the cortical surface, and it does not require time series data. We also presented that the current method is robust to the registration errors between T1 structural images and the fMRI data.
On the robustification of the z-test statistic

The z-test statistic is one of the most popular statistics. However, this conventional z-test has a serious pitfall when some of observations in a sample are contaminated. We propose two alternatives which satisfy asymptotic normality. We used the median or Hodges-Lehmann estimator instead of the mean and we also used the median absolute deviation or Shamos estimator instead of the standard deviation in the z-test statistic. The proposed alternatives are easy to implement. Thus, it is quite useful for engineers and practitioners. Through extensive Monte Carlo simulations, we obtained the empirical statistical power curves which clearly show that the proposed alternatives outperform the traditional method based on the z-test. A real-data illustration is also provided.
