<P><I>Spatholobus suberectus</I> (SS) is a medicinal herb commonly used in Asia to treat anemia, menoxenia and rheumatism. However, its effect of diabetes-induced renal damage and mechanisms of action against advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are unclear. In this study, we evaluated the effects of SS on diabetes-induced renal damage and explored the possible underlying mechanisms using db/db type 2 diabetes mice. db/db mice were administered SS extract (50 mg/kg) orally for 6 weeks. SS-treated group did not change body weight, blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. However, SS treatment reversed diabetes-induced dyslipidemia and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio in db/db mice. Moreover, SS administration showed significantly increased protein expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), which is a transcription factor for antioxidant enzyme. SS significantly upregulated glyoxalase 1 (Glo1) and NADPH quinine oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) expression but reduced CML accumulation and downregulated receptor for AGEs (RAGE). Furthermore, SS showed significant decrease of periodic acid–Schiff (PAS)-positive staining and AGEs accumulation in histological and immunohistochemical analyses of kidney tissues. Taken together, we concluded that SS ameliorated the renal damage by inhibiting diabetes-induced glucotoxicity, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress, through the Nrf2/antioxidant responsive element (ARE) stress-response system.</P>

Chronic allograft injury by subclinical borderline change

Purpose: This study investigated the impact of subclinical borderline changes on the development of chronic allograft injury in patients using a modern immunosuppression protocol. Methods: Seventy patients with stable renal allograft function and who underwent protocol biopsies at implantation, 10 days and 1 year after transplantation were included and classified based on biopsy findings at day 10. The no rejection (NR) group included 33 patients with no acute rejection. The treatment (Tx) group included 21 patients with borderline changes following steroid pulse therapy, and the nontreatment (NTx) group included 16 patients with borderline changes nontreated. Results: The Banff Chronicity Score (BChS) and modified BChS (MBChS) were not different among the three groups at implantation (P = 0.48) or on day 10 (P = 0.96). Surprisingly, the NTx group had more prominent chronic scores at the 1-year biopsy, including BChS (3.07 ± 1.33, P = 0.005) and MBChS (3.14 ± 1.41, P = 0.008) than those in the Tx and NR group, and deterioration of BChS was more noticeable in the NTx group (P = 0.037), although renal function was stable (P = 0.66). No difference in chronic injury scores was observed between the Tx and NR groups at the 1-year biopsy. Conclusion: Subclinical borderline changes can be a risk factor for chronic allograft injury and should be considered for antirejection therapy.

Reversible metal electrodeposition (RME) windows are a promising material for electrochromic windows and electronic display applications. However, the lifetime of RME devices is a major drawback in the preparation of commercial and practical devices. In this study, we propose a new strategy to prolong the stability and improve the efficiency of RME devices. By using tungsten oxide, a well-known electrochromic material, to modify the surface of a transparent conductive electrode, superior, stable, and highly effective devices were prepared successfully. By applying a low potential of − 0.8 V to 0.5 V, the RME device can quickly switch between a bleached state and colored state with different colors changing from transparent to black and deep blue. The performance improvement of the RME device can be explained by the simultaneous reduction of tungsten oxide and metal ion deposition in the conductive substrate under an applied potential. Furthermore, the lifetime of the device increased significantly (over 1500 cycles) owing to the shielding role of tungsten oxide film in the acid medium, which is an indispensable component of reversible electrochromic devices.

In this study, a neutral beam was formed using a low angle forward reflection of the ion beam and its degree of neutralization at different reflection angles was investigated. When the ion beam was reflected by a reflector at the angles lower than 15°, most of the ions reflected were neutralized and the lower reflector angle showed the higher degree of neutralization. Photoresist(PR) and SiO₂ etchings were carried out with the neutralized oxygen and fluorine radical fluxes, respectively, and highly anisotropic etch profiles could be obtained suggesting the formation of highly directional neutral flux.
