        The Spectrum of Memory: Animated Documentary In-between Self-Narration and Social Criticism

        This is a practice-based research, in the process of creating Ketchup(《番茄酱》), a short work of animated documentary as an exploration of autobiographical memory and trauma memory, the author also experimented with the narration structure and visual metaphor in animated documentary. Since a series of important animated documentary works were first produced starting in 1995, including Drawn from Memory(Paul Fierlinger,1995), Sunrise over Tiananmen Square (Shuibo Wang, 1999) and Waltz with Bashir (Ari Folman,2008), animated documentary has revealed a new style of narration for the author themselves, and at the same time a device for social criticism. By using “first person” perspective or even voices, animated documentary can deeply rethink and question social problems and historical trauma. This paper focuses on the spectrum of memory, including the taste of memory, the color of memory, the structure of memory and the metaphor of memory, these aspects of memories will be explored deeply through the cross-dialogue between the above art works and a series of animated documentaries from east European countries. The key point of research of animated documentary also relies on rethinking and redefining what animated documentary is, this paper demonstrates animated documentary is already beyond the discussion of ontology of animation or documentary, it is a new entity with its own identity and potential.

        The Archeology of Memory

        본 논문은 실행에 근거한 연구로, 기억의 신비와 복잡함을 탐구할 수 있는 유일한 형태인 애니메이션 다큐멘터리에 관한 실험을 탐색하는 데 목적을 둔다. 애니메이션 다큐멘터리란 역사적으로 자리잡아 영향을 받은 내러티브의 맥락에서 한 개인의 기억을 밝혀낼 수 있는 하나의 매체라고 할 수 있다. 애니메이션과 다큐멘터리간의 혼인은 새로운 형태의 영화를 탄생하게 했다. 그렇다면 이 새로운 형태를 어떻게 범주화할 것인가? 이것은 애니메이션 단편영화인가 아니면 다큐멘터리 단편영화인가? 실제로 이것은 애니메이션과 다큐멘터리의 본질에 대해 질문하는 문제를 제기한다. 슈이보 왕 (Shuibo Wang)의 작품 이래로 더 많은 젊은 중국의 아티스트들은 시각적 나레이션에 있어서 상징을 통한 (정치적인 팝 트렌드와 관련된 상징) 실험을 해왔는데 이것은 중국 현대 예술분야에서 구조주의와 기호학을 반영하는 것이라고 보여질 수도 있다. 사례연구로 본 논문에서는 애니메이션 단편 “케첩 (Ketchup)”이 6세 소년의 기억을 통해서 어떻게 청춘의 문제와 사회적 혼란을 드러내는 지에 대해서 밝힐 것이다. 그간 영화제와 학회에서 청중은 이 “케첩”이 사실에 근거해서 만든 작품이라는 사실을 알고 충격을 받았으며, 또한 그런 중대한 사건이 어떻게 해서 거의 잊혀지게 되었는지에 대해서도 궁금함을 표시했다. 사실상 이 망각이라는 것은 기억의 층의 한 부분이다. 애니메이션 다큐멘터리는 우리의 기억이 어떻게 형성되는지를 탐험하는 새로운 방법을 제공할 것이다. This is a practice-based research, aiming to explore the experiments of Animated Documentary, which is a unique form can explore the mysteries and complexity of memories. Animated Documentary is a medium through which one can reveal an individual’s memories within the context of a narrative that is historically situated and influenced. The marriage of animation and documentary gave birth to a new form of film. How to category this new form? Is it an animated short or documentary short? In fact, this raises issue that questioning the nature of animation and documentary. From Shuibo Wang’s works, more young Chinese artists began to experiment with symbols (related to the Political Pop Trend) in visual narration, which could also be seen as a reflection of structuralism and semiology in the contemporary Chinese art field. As a case study, this paper demonstrates how animated short “Ketchup” revealed the problems of youth and social turmoil through the memories of a six-year boy. On the Festivals and conferences, the publics were shocked to know “Ketchup” based on true memories, and they were more curious why the crucial things almost be forgotten. Actually forgetfulness is one of the layers of memories and Animated Documentary will offer a new way to explore how our memories are shaped.

        Theoretical research on the identification method of bridge dynamic parameters using free decay response

        Input excitation and output response of structure are needed in conventional modal analysis methods. However, input excitation is often difficult to be obtained in the dynamic load test of bridge structures. Therefore, what attracts engineers’ attention is how to get dynamic parameters from the output response. In this paper, a structural experimental modal analysis method is introduced, which can be used to conveniently obtain dynamic parameters of the structure from the free decay response. With known damping coefficients, this analysis method can be used to identify the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of MDOF structures. Based on the modal analysis theory, the mathematical relationship of damping ratio and frequency is obtained. By using this mathematical relationship to improve the previous method, an improved experimental modal analysis method is proposed in this paper. This improved method can overcome the deficiencies of the previous method, which can not identify damping ratios and requires damping coefficients in advance. Additionally, this improved method can also identify the natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios of the bridge only from the free decay response, and ensure the stability of identification process by using modern mathematical means. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of this method are demonstrated by a numerical example of a simply supported reinforced concrete beam.

      • Effect of La<sup>3+</sup> ion doping on the performance of Eu<sup>2+</sup> ions in novel Sr<sub>3</sub>CeNa(PO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>2</sub>SiO<sub>4</sub> phosphors

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We synthesized and investigated the effect of La<SUP>3+</SUP> ion doping in a novel phosphor-silicate apatite Sr<SUB>2.99</SUB>CeNa(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>SiO<SUB>4</SUB>:0.01Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> phosphor. X-ray diffraction, GSAS Rietveld refinement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, luminescent spectra, decay curves, and thermal quenching were applied to investigate the phase, structure, luminescence, and thermal stability properties of the obtained phosphor. It is noteworthy that the Eu<SUP>2+</SUP>-activated Sr<SUB>3</SUB>CeNa(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>SiO<SUB>4</SUB> phosphor can match well with commercial near-UV chips, suggesting its promising application in phosphor-converted white LEDs. Interestingly, by incorporating La<SUP>3+</SUP> ions in Sr<SUB>2.99</SUB>CeNa(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>SiO<SUB>4</SUB>: 0.01Eu<SUP>2+</SUP>, the regulation of Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> luminescence intensities in two centers was achieved via two methods: one is to increase the La<SUP>3+</SUP> concentration from 0 to 0.9 mol and the other is to adjust the excitation wavelength from 300 to 390 nm. More specifically, the luminescence dynamic process and internal quantum efficiency were also changed by La<SUP>3+</SUP> ion doping in Sr<SUB>2.99</SUB>CeNa(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>SiO<SUB>4</SUB>:0.01Eu<SUP>2+</SUP>. Therefore, these phenomena illustrate that incorporating La<SUP>3+</SUP> ions in Sr<SUB>2.99</SUB>CeNa(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>SiO<SUB>4</SUB>: 0.01Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> can affect the performance and characteristics of Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> ions.         Behavior and simplified analysis of steel-concrete composite beams subjected to localized blast loading

        Finite element simulations are increasingly used in structural analysis and design, especially in cases where complex structural and loading conditions are involved. Due to considerable progresses in computer technology as well as nonlinear finite-element analysis techniques in past years, it has become possible to pursue an accurate analysis of the complex blast-induced structural effects by means of numerical simulations. This paper aims to develop a better understanding of the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams (SCCB) under localized blast loading through a numerical parametric study. A finite element model is set up to simulate the blast-resistant features of SCCB using the transient dynamic analysis software LS-DYNA. It is demonstrated that there are three dominant failure modes for SCCB subjected to localized blast loading. The effect of loading position on the behavior of SCCB is also investigated. Finally, a simplified model is proposed for assessing the overall response of SCCB subjected to localized blast loading.

        Blue shift behavior of Eu<sup>2+</sup> emission in eulytite-type Sr<sub>3</sub>La(PO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>3</sub> phosphor based on the release of adjacent Eu<sup>3+</sup>-induced stress

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We have synthesized and investigated the eulytite-type single-phased Sr<SUB>3</SUB>La(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>:Eu<SUP>2+</SUP>, Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> phosphor. GSAS Rietveld refinement, X-ray diffraction, luminescent spectra, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were applied to investigate the obtained phosphor. Detailed crystal structure analysis confirmed that Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> and Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> activators were able to replace Sr<SUP>2+</SUP> and La<SUP>3+</SUP> sites, respectively. The Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> ions occupied two types of Sr/La luminescent centers exhibited blue and green emissions, while the Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> ions resided one type of Sr/La luminescent centers exhibited typical red emission. It is noteworthy that Eu-activated Sr<SUB>3</SUB>La(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB> phosphor had a wide absorption band at 250–450 nm, matching well with the commercial UV/near-UV chips. Interestingly, an abnormal blue shift behavior of Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> emission was observed in Sr<SUB>3</SUB>La(PO<SUB>4</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>:Eu<SUP>2+</SUP>,Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> system because of the strong covalent character of Eu<SUP>3+</SUP>-O<SUP>2-</SUP> bond and the release of adjacent Eu<SUP>3+</SUP>-induced stress. Therefore, the result suggests that the Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> can affect the performance of Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> ions in this system.       • Color–tunable luminescence and energy transfer behaviors of Dy<sup>3+</sup>/Eu<sup>3+</sup> co–doped SrLaMgTaO<sub>6</sub> phosphors for solid state lighting applications

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A series of color–tunable SrLa<SUB>0.93-y</SUB>MgTaO<SUB>6</SUB>:0.07Dy<SUP>3+</SUP>, yEu<SUP>3+</SUP> phosphors were synthesized via solid–state reaction. The X–ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectra, luminescent spectra, lifetimes and thermal quenching were applied to characterize the obtained phosphors. The X–ray diffraction results revealed that the obtained phosphors possessed pure monoclinic phase. The band gap of SrLaMgTaO<SUB>6</SUB> was calculated from Vienna ab initio simulation package and diffuse reflectance spectra. The energy transfers from host to Dy<SUP>3+</SUP> and Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> ions were confirmed by the luminescence spectra. Furthermore, the SrLa<SUB>0.92</SUB>MgTaO<SUB>6</SUB>: 0.07Dy<SUP>3+</SUP>, 0.01Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> phosphor had excellent thermal stability, while the integrated PL intensity still kept about 83.34% at 150°C of that measured at room temperature (30°C). In addition, the warm and cold white light emission could be generated with different Eu<SUP>3+</SUP> contents.         Springback prediction method for double-curved workpiece considering plate anisotropy in multi-point forming

        Springback is adversely affected by mechanical anisotropy in the process of sheet metal forming. In this work, an analytical method was proposed to predict the springback of the double-curved workpiece in multi-point forming process. To characterize the anisotropy of the AA7B04 aluminum plate, the plate was divided into several layers along thickness direction. And in each layer, the calculation of bending moment was done respectively based on von Mises, Hill’s 48 and Yld2004-18p yield criterion. After springback, the neutral surface curvature was calculated and the profile of the neutral surface was constructed by the Bezier surface blending method. To verify the prediction method, finite element simulation and bending experiment were performed. The results show that the predictive accuracy of the method was more accurate than that with the isotropy model. Additionally, the most accurate constitutive model to describe the in-plane anisotropy of AA7B04 aluminum was the Yld2004-18p yield criterion.

        Springback analysis of the stiffened panel milling from the bent plate

        An analytical method considering the redistribution of residual stress in the bent plate is proposed to predict the springback of the stiffened panel when milling the panel layer by layer. Two types of stiffened panel, namely, a panel with crosswise stiffeners and a panel with lengthwise stiffeners, were selected as examples and were analyzed during the removal of each layer. Moreover, a finite-element simulation of the milling process was conducted to make comparisons with the analytical results, which demonstrates similar stress distribution and springback values. The maximum stress variation and springback value appeared when the milling depth reached the initial neutral surface. When the plate thickness decreased, the errors between analytical results and FEM results increased, and the lengthwise-stiffened panel was less affected by errors than the crosswise-stiffened panel because of a larger moment of inertia. The effects of different milling thicknesses per layer, initial plate thickness, and bending radius were also analyzed. Moreover, the milling experiment was performed to make verification. The results suggest that the analytical method can predict the springback of the stiffened panel effectively. The proposed method can also be applied to other similar forming conditions.
