Ammonia has received significant attention as a fuel due to its carbon-free molecular structure. However, burning ammonia is challenging because of its low laminar burning velocity. To promote the combustion velocity, the authors propose a constant volume combustion chamber with a sub-chamber. This study investigated the effects of the mixing time and equivalence ratio of the ammonia/oxygen/argon mixture on combustion. The mean velocity of the ejection from the sub-chamber can be calculated by evaluating the combustion pressure, mass fraction burned, and volume fraction burned. It was clarified that with the sub-chamber structure, the ejection from the sub-chamber improved the compression and turbulence of unburned gas in the main chamber and increased the mean flame velocity of ammonia combustion. The appropriate glow plug temperature could improve the ignitability of the fuel mixture, leading to increased combustion efficiency, maximum combustion pressure, and reduced combustion time.

In our recent work (Ma et al., in Planta 229(3):457-469, 2009a and 229(4):1077-1086, 2009b), two three-intron type III PKS genes, PcPKS1 and PcPKS2, were isolated from Polygonum cuspidatum Sieb. et Zucc. Phylogenetic and functional analyses revealed PcPKS1 is a three-intron chalcone synthase (CHS) gene, and PcPKS2 is found to be a three-intron benzalacetone synthase (BAS) gene. The regular CHS encoded by a single intron gene have not been isolated and characterized from P. cuspidatum. In this work a further CHS with one intron (PcPKS3) and a stilbene synthase (STS) gene with three-intron (PcPKS5) were isolated and characterized by functional and phylogenetic analyses. In comparison with PcPKS1, a bifunctional enzyme with both CHS and BAS activity, the enzymatic product of recombinant PcPKS3 was naringenin, bis-noryangonin (BNY) and 4-coumaroyltriacetic acid lactone (CTAL) occurred as side products. The PcPKS5 synthesized resveratrol and a trace amount of naringenin from p-coumaroyl-CoA. To our knowledge, PcPKS5 is the first reported three-intron STS gene in flowering plants. In this work, we speculated that this involved a possible evolutionary route of plant-specific type III PKS superfamily in P. cuspidatum.
Synthesis of Nickel Hierarchical Microstructures by a Simple Hydrothermal Route

Nickel hierarchical microstructures have been synthesized from the reduction of nickel hydrazine complexes by a simple hydrothermal method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The results indicated that the Ni hierarchical microstructures are face-centered cubic phase with a size of 2-3 μm for a single hierarchical microstructure while some thick petals with a length in the range of 0.5-1.5 μm extrude around the surface. The value of coercivity reached 121 Oe at room temperature, which is vastly superior to that of bulk nickel. Parallel experiments showed that the hydrothermal reaction time and the presence of surfactant cetyltrimethylamonium bromide (CTAB) played important roles in the formation of such hierarchical morphology.
Solution Synthesis of Copper Microflowers

Copper microflowers composed of many thin nanopetals have been successfully synthesized on a large scale by the reaction of CuCl2 with N2H4 in the presence of sodium tartrate as the complexing reagent and cetyl-trimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and a UV-vis spectrum. The results indicate that the amount of CTAB has a great effect on the shape of the resultant copper products. Only copper nanoparticles can be obtained without a surfactant while irregular flower-like microstructures with very thick petals can be produced with large amounts of CTAB.
Cloning and Characterization of a PI-like MADS-Box Gene in Phalaenopsis Orchid

The highly evolved flowers of orchids have colorful sepals and fused columns that offer an opportunity to discover new genes involved in floral development in monocotyledon species. In this investigation, we cloned and characterized the homologous PISTALLATA-like (PI-like) gene PhPI15 ($\underline{Ph}alaenopsis$ $\underline{PI}$ STILLATA # $\underline{15}$), from the Phalaenopsis hybrid cultivar. The protein sequence encoded by PhPI15 contains a typical PI-motif. Its sequence also formed a subclade with other monocot PI-type genes in phylogenetic analysis. Southern analysis showed that PhPI15 was present in the Phalaenopsis orchid genome as a single copy. Furthermore, it was expressed in all the whorls of the Phalaenopsis flower, while no expression was detected in vegetative organs. The flowers of transgenic tobacco plants ectopically expressing PhPI15 showed male-sterile phenotypes. Thus, as a Class-B MADS-box gene, PhPI15 specifies floral organ identity in orchids.

Will small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies search more deeplyor search more broadly for product innovation at high levels of environmental turbulence? Inanswering this question, unlike prior studies that treat search depth and search breadth asseparate variables to measure firms’ external knowledge search strategy, this studyintroduces a new concept, external search towards depth-dominance, to capture the trade-offbetween search depth and search breadth for SMEs in a resource-constrained context. Usingdata on 491 Chinese manufacturing SMEs, we find that SMEs search more deeply at highlevels of technological and market turbulence. Moreover, the positive relationship betweenperceived technological turbulence (or perceived market turbulence) and external searchtowards depth-dominance is stronger when the differentiation propensity of a firm’scompetitive strategy is lower. The findings contribute to the understanding of innovationsearch in a resource-constrained context and the context specificity of innovation search.
