Early introducing the ducks into the paddy field involves a variety of environmental changes such as new surroundings and contact with water, so that some free-ranged ducks show behavioral and physiological changes indicative of stress or dic from not adapted for new circumstances. Moreover, th free-ranged ducks was tread on the rice plant, and required a great deal of labor and time for captured the ducks after finishing duckling on behavior patterns, body weight gain and yield of the rice plant in paddy fields. Three paddy plots were used as control (no imprinting and no contact with people), taming (imprinting and regular handling) and roughness (handling roughly and strike terror to ducks) plots. Right after introducing the ducks into the paddy field, eating and moving behaviour of taming plot ducks tended to be longer time spend than that of other treatments. However, eating and moving time tended to be longer in the control than that of other two treatments on the 2 weeks after. Flighting distance was not showed in the free-ranging period taming plot, but the control plot, but the control plot was significantly (P<0.05) longer than the and roughness plots. Body weight gains was not significant. The number of rice plants damaged by free-ranging ducks in the taming plot were significantly (P<0.05) less than that in the control plot, but the yield and yield components of the rice plant were not differ among 3 treatments. These results indicated that the imprinting or regular handling and related treatments of duckling was reducing badly damage of rice plants, captured time and labor of free-ranged ducks in paddy field, although the working behavior of ducks and yield ability of the rice plants were not affected.

Daily inspection or working reports are widely used in manufacturing companies. A lot of useful information for process conditions and status are included in such documents. Although there is a large volume of such reports, most companies do not try to analyze them to improve their processes. To find optimal process condition, they usually adopt experimental design or evolutionary operations methods, which are quite useful in laboratories but difficult or not economical to be applied in actual manufacturing processes under operation. This study proposes a data mining procedure that might be effective in analyzing process data. The main idea lies in the categorical transformation of process data. As the range of the process variables and quality characteristics are quite narrow, it is hard to apply standard statistical analysis procedures. Therefore, it is necessary to transform the data to be suitable for analysis. In this study, data categorization is adopted and then conventional statistical tools such as contingency tables are applied. Such analysis extracted some patterns and information that can be used in searching optimal process conditions.
Runx3 is required for the differentiation of lung epithelial cells and suppression of lung cancer

Human lung adenocarcinoma, the most prevalent form of lung cancer, is characterized by many molecular abnormalities. K-ras mutations are associated with the initiation of lung adenocarcinomas, but K-ras-independent mechanisms may also initiate lung tumors. Here, we find that the runt-related transcription factor Runx3 is essential for normal murine lung development and is a tumor suppressor that prevents lung adenocarcinoma. Runx3−/− mice, which die soon after birth, exhibit alveolar hyperplasia. Importantly, Runx3−/− bronchioli exhibit impaired differentiation, as evidenced by the accumulation of epithelial cells containing specific markers for both alveolar (that is SP-B) and bronchiolar (that is CC10) lineages. Runx3−/− epithelial cells also express Bmi1, which supports self-renewal of stem cells. Lung adenomas spontaneously develop in aging Runx3+/− mice (∼18 months after birth) and invariably exhibit reduced levels of Runx3. As K-ras mutations are very rare in these adenomas, Runx3+/− mice provide an animal model for lung tumorigenesis that recapitulates the preneoplastic stage of human lung adenocarcinoma development, which is independent of K-Ras mutation. We conclude that Runx3 is essential for lung epithelial cell differentiation, and that downregulation of Runx3 is causally linked to the preneoplastic stage of lung adenocarcinoma.

Peripartum cardiomyopathy is relatively uncommon and characterized by cardiac dilatation and congestive heart failure of unexplained cause during the last trimester of pregnancy or within 6 months after delivery. The cause of this disease is unknown and the mortality rate may be as high as 25 to 50 percent. Recently, we experienced a case of this disease in 34 year-old woman who had triple pregnancy and preterm labor at 30 weeks of gestation. This case was summarized here with brief review of related literatures.
Phase transitions and relaxation dynamics of Ising models exchanging particles

A variety of systems in nature and in society are open and subject to exchanging their constituents with other systems (e.g., environments). For instance, in biological systems, cells collect necessary energy and material by exchange of molecules or ions. Similarly, countries, cities or research institutes evolve as their constituents move in or out. To probe the corresponding particle exchange dynamics in such systems, we consider two Ising models exchanging particles and establish a master equation describing the equilibrium phases as well as the non-equilibrium dynamics of the system. It is found that an additional stable phase emerges as a consequence of the particle exchange process. Furthermore, we formulate the Ginzburg-Landau theory which allows to probe correlation effects. Accordingly, critical slowing down is manifested and the associated dynamic exponent is computed in the linear relaxation regime. In particular, this approach is relevant for investigating the grand canonical description of the system plus environment, with particle exchange and state transitions taken into account explicitly.
Modification of the gravity model and application to the metropolitan Seoul subway system.

<P>The Metropolitan Seoul Subway system is examined through the use of the gravity model. Exponents describing the power-law dependence on the time distance between stations are obtained, which reveals a universality for subway lines of the same topology. In the short (time) distance regime the number of passengers between stations does not grow with the decrease in the distance, thus deviating from the power-law behavior. It is found that such reduction in passengers is well described by the Hill function. Further, temporal fluctuations in the passenger flow data, fitted to the gravity model modified by the Hill function, are analyzed to reveal the Yule-type nature inherent in the structure of Seoul.</P>
