        Anti-Poverty Family Policies in China: A Critical Evaluation

        Despite its rapid economic growth, China remains a developing country facing serious challengesof poverty and inequality. This article examines the development and effectiveness of China’s primaryanti-poverty family policy, the Minimum Living Standard Assurance (MLSA, or Dibao). Using rich administrative data and building on the existing literature, this article provides a criticalevaluation of MLSA’s benefit generosity, coverage, targeting, and anti-poverty effectiveness. Tohelp reinforce MLSA’s anti-poverty impacts, local governments in recent years have implementeda series of supplementary policies and programs, including health, education, housing, and worksupport programs. This article also provides an assessment of these supplementary policies andprograms and draws policy implications for the ongoing expansion of the Chinese government’santi-poverty efforts.

        An Optimization Algorithm with Novel Flexible Grid: Applications to Parameter Decision in LS-SVM

        Genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are two excellent approaches to multimodal optimization problems. However, slow convergence or premature convergence readily occurs because of inappropriate and inflexible evolution. In this paper, a novel optimization algorithm with a flexible grid optimization (FGO) is suggested to provide adaptive trade-off between exploration and exploitation according to the specific objective function. Meanwhile, a uniform agents array with adaptive scale is distributed on the gird to speed up the calculation. In addition, a dominance centroid and a fitness center are proposed to efficiently determine the potential guides when the population size varies dynamically. Two types of subregion division strategies are designed to enhance evolutionary diversity and convergence, respectively. By examining the performance on four benchmark functions, FGO is found to be competitive with or even superior to several other popular algorithms in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency, tending to reach the global optimum earlier. Moreover, FGO is evaluated by applying it to a parameter decision in a least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) to verify its practical competence.

        High-throughput data on circular RNA reveal novel insights into chronic glomerulonephritis

        Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs), a unique novel type of RNA, have been widely reported to be involved in physiologic and pathologic processes in humans. However, the exact molecular pathogenesis of circRNAs in chronic glomerulonephritis (CGN) is far from clear. Objective This paper aims to evaluate the specific expression profile of circRNAs in renal cortex tissues from Adriamycin-induced CGN rats. Methods CircRNAs were screened in renal cortex tissues from 3 CGN rats and 3 control rats by using high-throughput sequencing (HTS). Then, 4 circRNAs were selected randomly for verification by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). In addition, the differentially expressed (DE) circRNAs were analyzed by bioinformatics methods. Results In total, 31 significantly DE circRNAs were identified, which revealed their potential roles in CGN; in particular, we found that 4 confirmed altered circRNAs (rno-circ-RNAs 689, 3217, 1327, and 5001) might play important roles in the development of CGN. Conclusion This study reveals a cluster of circRNAs that are DE in Adriamycin-induced CGN rats, which brings us closer to understanding the pathogenic mechanisms and may provide new potential targets for clinical treatment.

      • DH332, a Synthetic β-Carboline Alkaloid, Inhibits B Cell Lymphoma Growth by Activation of the Caspase Family

        Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate anti-tumor effects and safety of DH332, a new ${\beta}$-carboline alkaloids derivatives in vitro and in vivo. Materials and Methods: The effects of DH332 on human (RAMOS RA.1) and mouse (J558) B lymphoma cell lines were detected using a CCK-8 kit (Cell Counting Kit-8), and apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry with PI/annexinV staining. Western blotting was used to detected caspase-3 and caspase-8. Neurotoxic and anti-tumor effects were evaluated in animal experiments. Results: DH332 exerts a lower neurotoxicity compared with harmine. It also possesses strong antitumor effects against two B cell lymphoma cell lines with low $IC_{50s}$. Moreover, DH332 could inhibit the proliferation and induce the apoptosis of RAMOS RA.1 and J558 cell lines in a dose-dependent manner. Our results suggest that DH332 triggers apoptosis by mainly activating the caspase signaling pathway. In vivo studies of tumor-bearing BALB/c mice showed that DH332 significantly inhibited growth of J558 xenograft tumors. Conclusions: DH332 exerts effective antitumor activity in vitro and in vivo, and has the potential to be a promising drug candidate for lymphoma therapy.

        The Social Benefit System in Urban China: Reforms and Trends from 1988 to 2002

        This article systematically reviews the macro level social policy changes in urban China during recent years. It also provides empirical evidence on how such policy changes reflect on micro level family benefit levels from 1988 to 2002 using the national China Household Income Project data. The social policy reform process gradually shifted away from welfare provision through work units to greater emphasis on individual taxes and contributions. The government has also taken a more active role in providing a safety net for the urban poor. Empirical results show that even though the real value of social benefits increased over time, their increasing pace was slower than that of market income, yielding a smaller share in final household income since the reforms. Pensions, public assistance, health, and education benefits increased during the period, while housing, food assistance, and supplementary income decreased.

        Exchange of the VP5 of Infectious Bursal Disease Virus in a Serotype I Strain with that of a Serotype II Strain Reduced the Viral Replication and Cytotoxicity

        Infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV), belonging to Avibirnavirus genus in the Birnaviridae family, consists of two segments of double-strand RNA. There are two distinct serotypes of IBDV, the pathogenic serotype I and the non-pathogenic serotype II. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences of a panel of VP5 genes retrieved from GenBank revealed a high identity among strains within the serotype I or serotype II group but a low identity between strains across two serotypes. In this study, we rescued two mosaic viruses, rGtGxVP5 and rGt2382VP5 by exchanging the VP5 gene of a cell culture-adapted serotype I Gt strain with its counterpart of the very virulent IBDV Gx strain, or a non-pathogenic 23/82 strain of the serotype II. In comparison to the parental strain rGt virus, the rGtGxVP5 showed the similar viral replication, cytotoxicity and the ability of inducing apoptosis; however, the other mosaic virus rGt2382VP5 had a lower titer and a reduced cytotoxicity. Although exchange of VP5 within serotype I group did not alter the viral replication and cytotoxicity of Gt strain, exchange of VP5 in the serotype I with that of a serotype II reduced the viral replication and cytotoxicity on chicken embryo fibroblast (CEF) cells. Therefore, the VP5 of serotype II may be one of the factors responsible for the distinct pathogenic features of two serotypes.

      • Research on Improved Hadoop Distributed File System in Cloud Rendering

        With the rapid development of cloud computing technology, it’s the cloud rendering that cloud computing is applied to render the job in CG (Computer Graphic) industry. The cloud rendering can handle a large number of rendering requests which are enormous pressure for back-end servers in system. Facing with massive data and computing resources, the bottleneck of original HDFS (Hadoop Distributed File System) based on cloud computing has become more and more prominent, such as the failure of single Namenode, scalability issues. Therefore, the paper proposed an improved HDFS which evolved a single Namenode into multi-Namenode. In HDFS, Metadata management is very important. So this paper presented a two-level Metadata distribution algorithm. The two-level algorithm was based on the principle that different distribution strategies were used to different categories of Metadata. The experiments verified that the improved HDFS effectively improved the performance of the system.

        Production cross-sections of projectile-like isotopes in 112Sn + 112Sn and 124Sn + 124Sn reactions at 1A GeV

        Isotopic cross-sections of projectile-like residues produced in 112Sn + 112Sn and 124Sn + 124Sn reactions at an incident beam energy of 1A GeV are studied in the framework of the multi-source thermal model. The multiplicity-like distribution of neutrons in projectile-like isotopes can be successfully expressed by using the Erlang distribution which is the folding result of multi-exponential distributions with the same parameter. The results calculated by using the model are in agreement with the experimental data of Föhr et al. [arXiv:1106.5368vl [nucl-ex]].
