Homodyne time-of-fl ight acousto-optic imaging for low-gain photodetector

Acousto-optics imaging (AOI) is a hybrid imaging modality that is capable of mapping the light fluence rate in deep tissue by local ultrasound modulation of the diffused photons. Since the intensity of the modulated photons is relatively low, AOI systems often rely on high-gain photodetectors, e.g. photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which limit scalability due to size and cost and may significantly increase the relative shot-noise in the detected signal due to low quantum yields or gain noise. In this work, we have developed a homodyne AOI scheme in which the modulated photons are amplified by interference with a reference beam, enabling their detection with a single low-gain photodetector in reflection-mode configuration. We experimentally demonstrate our approach with a silicon photodiode, achieving over a 4-fold improvement in SNR in comparison to a PMT-based setup. The increased SNR manifested in lower background noise level thus enabling deeper imaging depths. The use of a fiber-based configuration enables the integration of our scheme in a hand-held AOI probe.
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy on nanolithography-prepared substrates

In this work, we demonstrate that surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signals allow to track down the localized surface plas-mon local eld spectral prole of lithographically-designed gold nano-structures. To this purpose, we used rhodamine 6G deposited onvarious gold nano-particle arrays. The local eld spectral proles obtained are discussed and compared to the far eld extinction spectraof the particle arrays. Thus, we show that the normalized relative SERS intensities follow remarkably well the surface plasmon reso-nances for all the arrays we investigated.

A liquid chromatographic–tandem mass spectrometric(LC–MS/MS) method was developed and appliedfor the determination of human Ab1-40 and Ab1-42 peptidesin transgenic mouse plasma to support preclinicalpharmacodynamics studies. The method consisted ofmicro-elution solid phase extraction for sample preparationand LC–MS/MS analysis in the negative ion mode usingelectrospray ionization for analysis. 15N53-Ab1-40 and15N55-Ab1-42 peptides were used as internal standards. A quadratic regression (weighted 1/concentrations), withan equation y = ax2 ? bx ? c, was used to fit calibrationcurves over the concentration range of 0.500–100 ng/mLfor both Ab1-40 and Ab1-42 peptides. For quality controlsamples at 6.00, 40.0 and 80.0 ng/mL from the qualificationexperiment, the within-run accuracy ranged from-2.69 to 0.583 % with precision values B8.23 % for Ab1-40. Within-run accuracy ranged from -4.83 to 10.1 % with precision values B8.87 % for Ab1-42. Samples from apharmacodynamics study using Tg2576 transgenic micewere analyzed by this qualified LC–MS/MS method andconcentrations were compared to those generated byELISA. The two methods were shown to be comparable forAb1-40 quantification of samples from the Tg2576 amyloidprecursor protein transgenic mouse model, but variedslightly for Ab1-42.

Background: Spinal cord involvement of primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) is rare in a young immunocompetent patient and can be misdiagnosed as an inflammatory demyelinating disease (IDD) of the central nervous system. Case report: We report a case of PCNSL mimicking IDD in a previously healthy 46-year-old man with weakness in both hands for 1 week. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the cervical spinal cord revealed contrast-enhancing intraparenchymal and leptomeningeal lesions in the cervical spinal cord and medulla oblongata. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis revealed pleocytosis (37/mm3). The patient’s symptoms and lesions improved with corticosteroid treatment. However, he developed semicomatose mentality 5 months later. Brain MRI, ventricular biopsy, and 18F-flurodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography confirmed PCNSL. The patient deceased 3 months later, despite high-dose methotrexate chemotherapy. Conclusion: Persistent gadolinium-enhancing MRI lesions along the ventricular regions and spinal leptomeninges could differentiate PCNSL involving the spinal cord from IDD in the early stages of the disease.
Integrating History of Mathematics in Teaching Cartesian Coordinate Plane: A Lesson Study

The History of Mathematics (HOM) was integrated in teaching the Cartesian Coordinate Plane (CCP) to Grade Seven learners of Moonwalk National High School using Lesson Study. After the lesson was taught, there were three valuable issues emerged: (1) HOM is a Springboard and/or a Medium of Motivation in Teaching CCP; (2) The History of CCP Opened a Wider Perspective about Its Real-life Application in the Modern World (3) In-tegration of History Developed a Sense of Purpose and an Appreciation of Mathematics Among Learners. Feedbacks solicited from the learners showed that they have under-standing of the importance of studying Mathematics after they learned the life and con-tributions of Rene Descartes to Mathematics. Hence, integration of history plays a vital role in developing positive attitudes among learners towards Math.
