Evaluation of the Perkins handheld applanation tonometer in horses and cattle

The objective of this study was to evaluate and validate the accuracy of the Perkins handheld applanation tonometer for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) in horses and cattle. Both eyes of 10 adult horses and cattle were evaluated in a postmortem study. The eyes from 10 clinically normal adult horses and cattle were also examined after bilateral auriculopalpebral nerve block and topical anesthesia for an in vivo study. IOP was measured postmortem using direct manometry (measured with an aneroid manometer) and tonometry (measured with a Perkins handheld applanation tonometer). The correlation coefficients (r^2) for the data from the postmortem manometry and Perkins tonometer study were 0.866 for horses and 0.864 for cattle. In the in vivo study, IOP in horses was 25.1 ± 2.9 mmHg (range 19.0~30.0 mmHg) as measured by manometry and 23.4 ± 3.2 mmHg (range 18.6~28.4 mmHg) according to tonometry. In cattle, IOP was found to be 19.7 ± 1.2 mmHg (range 18.0~22.0 mmHg) by manometry and 18.8 ± 1.7 mmHg (range 15.9~20.8 mmHg) by tonometry. There was a strong correlation between the IOP values obtained by direct ocular manometry and the tonometer in both horses and cattle. Our results demonstrate that the Perkins handheld tonometer could be an additional tool for accurately measuring IOP in equine and bovine eyes.

Planetary gearboxes are extensively used in mechatronic applications due to their compactness and high reduction ratios. The complex kinematic of such systems and the requirement of low-vibration-gears suggest studying these gearboxes with appropriate dynamic models. To this purpose, a planar lumped parameter model with 18 degrees of freedom was implemented. Model parameters such as the stiffness of the bearings and the gear meshes were calculated using dedicated FEM simulations. Two different gearbox configurations were simulated and experimentally tested. The compared results showed a good agreement. The main goal of the research was to assess the validity of such methodology for the prediction of the system eigenfrequencies. Additionally, from a kinematic analysis of the gearbox it was possible to individuate the self-excitation frequencies. The overlapping of these self-excited frequencies with the eigenfrequencies of the system was individuated as the major cause of the gearbox noise.

Study Design: Prospective cohort study. Purpose: To assess the ability of a stand-alone lumbar interspinous implant (interspinous/interlaminar lumbar instrumented fusion, ILIF) associated with bone grafting to promote posterior spine fusion in degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) with vertebral instability. Overview of Literature: A few studies, using bilateral laminotomy (BL) or bilateral decompression by unilateral laminotomy (BDUL), found satisfactory results in stenotic patients with decompression alone, but others reported increased olisthesis, or subsequent need for fusion in DS with or without dynamic instability. Methods: Twenty-five patients with Grade I DS, leg pain and chronic low back pain underwent BL or BDUL and ILIF implant. Olisthesis was 13% to 21%. Follow-up evaluations were performed at 4 to 12 months up to 25 to 44 months (mean, 34.4). Outcome measures were numerical rating scale (NRS) for back and leg pain, Oswestry disability index (ODI) and short-form 36 health survey (SF-36) of body pain and function. Results: Fusion occurred in 21 patients (84%). None had increased olisthesis or instability postoperatively. Four types of fusion were identified. In Type I, the posterior part of the spinous processes were fused. In Type II, fusion extended to the base of the processes. In Type III, bone was present also around the polyetheretherketone plate of ILIF. In Type IV, even the facet joints were fused. The mean NRS score for back and leg pain decreased by 64% and 80%, respectively. The mean ODI score was decreased by 52%. SF-36 bodily pain and physical function mean scores increased by 53% and 58%, respectively. Computed tomography revealed failed fusion in four patients, all of whom still had vertebral instability postoperatively. Conclusions: Stand-alone ILIF with interspinous bone grafting promotes vertebral fusion in most patients with lumbar stenosis and unstable Grade I DS undergoing BL or BDUL.

Visual Anthropology in Sardinia by Silvio Carta reviews the history of documentary cinema in Sardinia in the twentieth century. Carta analyzes the documentary cinema starting from the first productions up to the 1992 film Tempus de Baristas (Time of the Barmen) by David MacDougall,1 focusing on the several methods of representation of Sardinian culture at different times. The book as a whole is properly thought out: the first chapter outlines the characteristics of “observational cinema”; the second chapter is about the way ethnographic cinema carries out a representation of culture; in the third chapter we see how “illustrative documentaries” suggest a dominant way of seeing Sardinian culture; the fourth chapter focuses mainly on Vittorio De Seta’s Banditi ad Orgosolo (Bandits of Orgosolo),2 seen as a real anthropological film; and the fifth chapter deals with MacDougall’s Tempus de Baristas.
“Operationalizing”: or, the Function of Measurement in Modern Literary Theory

“Operationalizing” refers to a process which is absolutely central to the new field of computational criticism, and of the digital humanities. It means building a bridge from the concepts of literary theory, through some form of quantification, to literary texts. The concept of “characterspace,” coined by Alex Woloch in The One vs. The Many, smoothly into “word-space”.“the number of words allocated to a particular character”. and, by counting the words each character utters, we can determine how much textual space it occupies. Measurement does not lead from the world, via quantification, to the constructions of theories; if anything, it leads back from theories, through data, to the empirical world. The measurement of character-space undermines the older notion, replacing it ith the idea of a conflict arising near the center of the network. In this context, this paper attempts to demonstrate how the unprecedented empirical power of digital tools and archives offers a unique chance to rethink the categories of literary study. Digital humanities may not yet have changed the territory of the literary historian, or the reading of individual texts; but operationalizing has certainly changed, and radicalized, our relationship to concepts: it has raised our expectations, by turning concepts into magic spells that can call into being a whole world of empirical data; and it has sharpened our skepticism. A theory-driven, data-rich research program has become imaginable, thanks to this enterprise of operationalizing.
