Characterization of Leptin Levels in Gestating Callipyge Ewes

        Fleming-Waddell, J.N.,Keisler, D.H.,Jackson, S.P.,Blanton, J.R. Jr. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.1

The callipyge mutation in sheep is a polar overdominant mutation that results in post-natal muscle hypertrophy in the loin and hindquarters of paternal heterozygotes (+/CLPG). Sheep that are homozygous for the callipyge allele (CLPG/CLPG) do not express the muscle hypertrophy phenotype, but serve as carriers for the mutation. Callipyge sheep are characterized by improved feed efficiencies and leaner carcasses. Leptin is a protein hormone secreted from adipose tissue and has been found to affect appetite and serve as an indicator of body fat mass. To date, very little knowledge is available as to the effect of the callipyge mutation on circulating leptin levels. Due to the interaction of leptin with feed intake and energy availability, and the fact that the majority of fetal growth occurs in late gestation, it is important to understand if the callipyge mutation interacts with leptin production in late gestational ewes. Therefore, our objective was to characterize serum concentrations of leptin in late gestational callipyge ewes vs. non-callipyge ewes. We evaluated genetically verified callipyge (n=6), homozygous (n=8) and normal (n=8) ewes weekly during the last eight wks of gestation through one wk post-partum. Weights were taken and body condition scores were assigned by trained personnel weekly. Blood was collected via jugular venipuncture on each sampling date and subjected to an ovine-specific leptin RIA. Genotype influences on peripheral concentrations of leptin were found to be highly significant (p=0.0005). Total leptin means for +/CLPG were 5.41${\pm}$0.40 ng/ml, CLPG/CLPG 8.11${\pm}$0.70 ng/ml, and +/+ 9.13${\pm}$0.93 ng/ml. Sampling date was also significant (p=0.0098) with all ewes showing a decrease in leptin levels throughout gestation and parturition. Using repeated measures, we were able to detect lower levels of plasma leptin in callipyge ewes, which may be indicative of their lower overall body fat content. These results indicate that the callipyge phenotype decreases the levels of adipose tissue and leptin production in gestating ewes.

        Two Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy

Fleming, Graham R.,Yang, Min-O,Agarwal, Ritesh,Prall, Bradley S.,Kaufman, Laura J.,Neuwahl, Fred Korean Chemical Society 2003 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.24 No.8

Two different electronically resonant two-dimensional spectroscopies are described. The first, two-color photon echo peak shift spectroscopy, is sensitive to correlations in transition frequency between the initial and probed (final) states. It provides new insight into the mechanism of ultrafast solvation and should prove useful for characterizing dynamics in inhomogeneous systems in general. The second technique, fifth order threepulse scattering, contains two coherence periods whose durations are controlled. The entire two-dimensional surface was recorded for a dye molecule in dilute solution and a photosynthetic light-harvesting complex. The data provide insight into the short-time dynamics of solvation and exciton relaxation, respectively.

North Korea’s Entrapment and Time Delay Tactics during Nuclear Negotiations

( Ian Fleming Zhou ),( Jo-ansie Van Wyk ) 서울대학교 통일평화연구원 2021 Asian Journal of Peacebuilding Vol.9 No.2

Weaker parties in a negotiation can change the assumed structural outcome of the negotiation by using strategies such as time delay tactics, which lead to entrapment. In this article, the Six-Party Talks are evaluated empirically to explore the utility of applying this bargaining tactic insight into international relations. The article applies Galin’s (2015) five stages of time delay tactics to the fifth and sixth rounds of the Six-Party Talks, with a focus on the triangular relations between the United States, South Korea, and North Korea. The article shows how North Korea as the weaker negotiating party used the time delay tactic to affect the fifth and sixth rounds of the Six-Party negotiations in its favor. North Korea’s use of several tactics included slowing down negotiations as much as possible, avoiding reaching a final agreement, prolonging negotiations by diversion, dragging out the negotiation process until some external or internal change occurs, and exhausting opponents until they are ready to concede. These tactics ultimately entrapped North Korea’s opponents resulting in the unsuccessful outcome of the Six-Party Talks.

Lawrence’s Vitalistic American Construct: An Organicistic Reading of the Mexican and New Mexican Essays, Hymns and Poems

        Fiona Fleming 한국로렌스학회 2023 D.H. 로렌스 연구 Vol.31 No.2

This article analyses the poems, essays, and hymns from The Plumed Serpent written by Lawrence in the 1920s and focuses on the vitalistic and organicistic portrayal of his experience in the Southwest. I will argue that the flows, vibrations and connections which he describes with reference to the American spirit of place, are apparent on a variety of levels in these writings, testifying to the immense artistic renewal provided by New Mexico and Mexico. The fauna and flora, primitive symbols and associations, local dances, songs and languages, all participated in the composition of Lawrence’s American subject matter and style, which, more than in any other of his creative periods, convey a newfound sense of collectivism, after the isolation and individualism of Australia, a heightened form of vitalistic spirituality and an uplifting prospect of shaping the future by reconnecting with the primitive past.

Reconstructing “The Nightmare” of WWI in D. H. Lawrence’s Kangaroo

        Fiona Fleming 한국로렌스학회 2018 D.H. 로렌스 연구 Vol.26 No.2

Chapter XII of D. H. Lawrence’s Australian novel Kangaroo (1923), entitled “The Nightmare,” is an analeptical account of the main character’s experience of war-time England, from 1916 to 1919. As pointed out by Bruce Steele in the Cambridge University Press edition of Kangaroo, the whole chapter, written in 1922, is largely autobiographical. A comparative study of this chapter and the letters which Lawrence wrote from 1916 to 1919, will therefore highlight the problematic process of reconstructing memories and rewriting them into a fictional work several years after the events took place. In addition to the common questions of truthfulness, embellishment and hyperbole, this semi-autobiographical analepse calls for an analysis of its narrative structure―how it is embedded in the general storyline using the trope of the “nightmare”―and of its relevance in the plot and the development of the main character, Richard Somers, an English writer who has travelled to Australia via Italy and India. Firstly, the chapter explores the beginning of Somers’s quest for self-reconstruction, after what is clearly depicted as a traumatic experience, through a painful yet necessary self-exploration and reconstruction of the past. Though the remembrance is presented as involuntary, the flow of repressed memories which suddenly resurfaces is examined in detail and organised around the central theme of fear, which initially triggered these war-time recollections. Secondly, the chapter relates the protagonist’s gradual emotional and intellectual break with the home country, caused by the spirit of “war effort” and the general climate of distrust and fear, patriotism and propaganda. However, the novel narrates the reconstruction of Somers’s paradoxical relationship with his home country, thanks to the disorientation, rootlessness and homesickness he endures in Australia.

      • Undecontextualizable: Performativity and the Conditions of Possibility of Linguistic Symbolism

Luke Fleming 한국외국어대학교 HK 세미오시스 연구센터 2018 Signs and Society Vol.6 No.3

In this article I argue that the canceling out (or defeasing) of performative indexical functions is a condition of possibility on linguistic symbolism. I show this to be the case by looking at words and expressions—like curse words and name taboos—whose performative functions can be canceled out only with the greatest of metalinguistic labor. I show that these indefeasible or rigid performatives are the semiotic-functional converses of J. L. Austin’s explicit performatives (e.g., “promise,” “bequeath”) in terms of (i) the orders of regimentation between semantic-symbolic and pragmatic-indexical functions, (ii) the indexical anchoring of pragmatic effects within either denotationally mediated events-of-narration (En) or interactionally mediated events-of-signaling (Es), and (iii) the articulation of indexical function with speech participant roles. The article concludes with a reflection on how the architecture of the phonology-semantics interface (or duality of patterning) safeguards symbolism by impeding the processes of runaway semiotic naturalization that produce rigid performativity.
