Research and Practice in Learning Portfolio Adoption on College Writing: A Case Study

Eunhee Han 한국외국어교육학회 2012 Foreign languages education Vol.19 No.4

The purpose of this study is to report and share an adoption on using learning portfolios in a university setting and writing through portfolio writing samples including personal drafts, peer feedback, teacher feedback, and personal reflections. By adopting the idea of using Learning Portfolio system, this study tries to report that it can be an applicable teaching/learning tool for English language learners (ELLs) in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context to facilitate their writing skills through using portfolio system. Participants were given a Learning Portfolio workshop which indicated how to make an appropriate portfolio and asked to collect their writing drafts, peer feedback, teacher feedback, and personal reflections. Both qualitative and interpretive analyses were conducted for 70 students’ portfolio samples throughout two different semesters. The study revealed that the students’ writing anxiety was reduced as they can check their progress through the collection of their portfolio. Errors of basic sentence structure, subject-verb relationship, and the tense were noticed by the peer feedback and teacher feedback. This study suggests that educators could be aware of, and consider adopting, the Learning Portfolio system in writing class so as to facilitate students’ writing development.

The Role of Progymnasmata in English Writing Class

        ( Eunhee Han ) 한국중등영어교육학회 2014 중등영어교육 Vol.7 No.4

This paper aims to suggest an English writing class lesson in therhetorical approach method through using progymnasmata activity. Thebackground of study is from ancient rhetorical writing exercises especiallyfor beginner writers. Specifically it focuses on imitation and paraphrasingas a writing activity variation. The approach of study is to provide awriting activity through imitation and paraphrasing which can be viewed asa learning style and structure. The current teaching of the writingcommunity has hardly addressed the rhetorical approach in teachingwriting. From the rhetorical approach, the study questions the role ofprogymnasmata (which means elementary exercises) and its effectivenessin writing class. As a sequenced writing exercise, that begins withimitation and/or a simple paraphrase and ends with complicated and/orsophisticated exercises, the author hypothesizes that progymnasmata canbe applied to a writing activity. In an effort to suggest a writing activitythe author introduces one progymnasmata, fables, to be integrated into thewriting exercises and used to cultivate mental activity. The author showswriting lesson activities of how to imitate and paraphrase the originalfables. Finally, the pedagogical implication and its challenges aresuggested and brought into teaching the writing class.

A NEST’s Narrative: Teaching English in Korea between the Mid 1970s and the Early 2000s

        Eunhee Han 한국영어교과교육학회 2019 영어교과교육 Vol.18 No.3

This study explores a qualitative evaluation of a NEST’s narrative of teaching experience from the mid-1970s to the early 2000s with Korean students. Narratives from one teacher who taught English in Korea were collected and analyzed. Data was gathered by oral and written narratives in the form of qualitative research. Narrative analysis was adapted, and events were analyzed inductively. Findings show that each decade has its uniqueness in terms of what teaching approaches applied, what roles a teacher and students had, how the class proceeded including the teacher’s reflections. In the 1970s, it was an imitation stage of teaching from other teachers with more of a teacher-oriented class. The next decade showed the changes of the teacher’s attitude and belief. The class became learner-oriented and created an enjoyable learning environment. During the 1990s an adjustment to the new teaching environment was required as the lab and co-teaching were introduced. The last decade of teaching brought a challenge to deal with computer usage in the class which also met with students being distracted by the computer. Study implications are provided with further study suggestion.

University Students’ Experience with MOOC for L2 Learning: A Case Study

        ( Han Eunhee ) 한국현대영어영문학회 2019 현대영어영문학 Vol.63 No.1

Because of the increasing popularity of the massive open online courses (MOOC), L2 learners are consequently being exposed to the MOOC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the L2 learner’s experience with MOOC. In this exploratory case there were twelve participants where interviews and observations were conducted, and the data from learner’s experiences with MOOC were gathered. Findings show that the L2 learners experienced confidence in language learning, possibly due to the connected content throughout a MOOC lecture, engaging in learning anytime and anywhere that they could access the internet. Also the university L2 learners perceived the MOOC as a new learning tool compared to that of their previous learning environment. The study findings imply that the MOOC may a useful tool to teach and learn L2 for university students. Further research and the study limitation are provided. (Korea Nazarene University)

        Teaching EFL college writing

        Eunhee Han 한국영어교과교육학회 2009 영어교과교육 Vol.8 No.2

The purpose of this study is to explore the experiences of EFL college students by providing a writing environment with a ‘grammatically- correctness-free-setting’ in the beginning stage of the writing process. The participants in this study comprise college students who enrolled in an English composition class in a university setting during the fall of 2009. The 31 students participated in this study. The participants in this study indicated that they perceived a non-threatening or little obsession with grammar correctness during the first two stages of the writing process which gave them freedom to write in English. Moreover, providing a non-threatening EFL writing class in the beginning stage of the writing process has potential to provide opportunities for college students to experience positive involvement in their writing, encouraging them to continue writing in English. The data analysis suggests that the increased freedom to use English writing skills may spring from providing two conditions in the classroom environment: (a) clear writing process instruction; and (b) a ‘grammatically-correctness-free-setting’ in the beginning writing stages. Further research are recommended.

        Motivation

        Eunhee Han 한국영어교과교육학회 2010 영어교과교육 Vol.9 No.3

This study examined the motivation of EFL students’ as they participate in a self-activity outside of the classroom curriculum through a self evaluation. Specifically, the researcher used the medium of English language television viewing to ascertain the effects of both integrative and instrumental motivation upon L2 learning. The study participants were 23 students including graduate, undergraduate, and English language program students in the U.S. The length of residence in America ranged from less than 1 year to 11 years. The major finding of this study was that both integrative and instrumental motivations are not determined by either the amount of time watching English language television or the length of residency in America. The implication of this study is that watching television programs in English outside of the classroom curriculum does promote learners’ interest and increased either or both their integrate and instrumental motivation. The need of more evidence from replicated studies with different groups of participants is also required.
