<P>'Proteinticle' is a nano-scale protein particle that is self-assembled inside cells with constant 3D structure and surface topology. The binding of IgG to the B domain of Staphylococcal protein A (SPA(B)) molecules that are genetically inserted on the surface of proteinticle enables the variable domains of bound IgG to be well oriented to effectively capture antigens, accordingly forming a highly sensitive 3D IgG probe. The five different proteinticles that originate from humans, bacteria, and virus and totally differ in size, shape, and surface structure were used for the surface display of SPA(B). The dissociation constant (K(D)) in the binding of IgG to SPA(B) on the proteinticle surface was estimated based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model: K(D) was 1-3 orders-of-magnitude lower compared to the previously reported K(D) in the binding of IgG to Staphylococcal protein A. The surface density and distribution of SPA(B) and especially the existence of hot (or highly congested) spots of SPA(B), which depend on the surface structure and the number of subunits as well as size and shape of proteinticle, is of crucial importance for the effective binding of IgG to SPA(B) on proteinticles. Although the five different proteinticles were demonstrated as proof-of-concept here, SPA(B)-mediated immobilization of IgG on the other proteinticles would be very useful for the fabrication of sensitive 3D immunoassay platforms.</P>
Molecular dynamics simulation study of a carbon-nanotube oscillator in a graphene-nanoribbon trench

<P>A graphene/carbon-nanotube (CNT) hybrid material can be useful in energy storage and nanoelectronic technologies. Here, we address a CNT oscillator encapsulated in a graphene-nanoribbon (GNR) trench as a novel design, and investigate its properties via classical molecular dynamics simulations. Because the energy barrier was very low while the CNT was encapsulated in the GNR trench, the CNT absorbed on the GNR surface could easily be encapsulated in the GNR trench. MD simulations showed that the CNT oscillator encapsulated in a GNR trench was compatible with simple CNT oscillators, so we anticipate that the CNT in the GNR trench could work as an oscillator. Thus, we can anticipate that the CNT encapsulated in a GNR trench can be applied to ultra-sensitive nanoelectromechanical oscillators and that this system has the possibility to be applied to relay-switching devices and to shuttle memories.</P>
Precarious motherhood : Lives of Southeast Asian marriage migrant women in Korea

This paper examines the experiences of Southeast Asian women married to Korean men to understand the social adjustments made by marriage migrant women as they cross national borders to form new families. The process of marrying into Korean families and becoming mothers of Korean children links them firmly into their new society, but their foreign origins and appearance mark them as outsiders and give them an ambiguous status that is at once both of insider and outsider. Based on interviews with fifteen marriage migrant women who reside in Gyeonggi Province, we discuss their experiences of motherhood, to show how ideas of nation, ethnicity and class interact. Their experiences in becoming “Korean mothers” create complicated and multi-tiered identities, practices, and strategies which engage with Korea’s patrilineal ideology, family norms, the cultural expectations of a homogeneous society, and the motherhood norms of Korea’s middle class. Finally, we highlight the agency of the marriage migrant women as they create and manage changing families and motherhood roles in a globalized world. 본 논문은 한국남성과 결혼한 동남아시아 여성을 경험을 중심으로 이들이 한국에 적응하는 과정에서 한국의 오랜 단일민족 국가규범과 부계중심의 가족문화, 그리고 자녀교육을 강조하는 한국의 모성규범이 어떻게 교차하는지 분석하였다. 연구참여자는 모두 15명이며 이주민이 많은 수도권 지역(경기도)으로 제한하였다. 결혼이주여성은 자녀를 통해 새로운 사회와 연결되지만, 단일민족국가 정서가 남아있는 한국사회에서 ‘다문화 자녀’는 다양한 차별에 직면해있다. 노동이주가 ‘초국적 모성’과 같은 모성의 변화를 가져오는 것처럼 결혼이주 역시 국가, 종족, 계층이 교차하는 가운데 다양한 어머니 노릇과 변화를 보여주고 있다. 결혼이주여성의 모성경험은 ‘한국인 엄마’가 되려는 기대 속에서 한국의 부계가족 중심의 문화와 동질적인 한국사회 규범, 그리고 중산층 중심의 모성 규범과 맞물러 다층적인 정체성과 실천, 전략 등을 만들어내는 과정에 놓여있다. 이 연구에서는 글로벌화되는 세계에서 결혼이주여성들이 만들어내는 가족과 모성의 변화를 통해 결혼이주여성의 행위성을 강조하고자 하였다.

Objectives We aimed to assess the radiation exposure for epidemiologic investigation in residents exposed to radiation from roads that were accidentally found to be contaminated with radioactive cesium-137 ($^{137}Cs$) in Seoul. Methods Using information regarding the frequency and duration of passing via the $^{137}Cs$ contaminated roads or residing/working near the roads from the questionnaires that were obtained from 8875 residents and the measured radiation doses reported by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, we calculated the total cumulative dose of radiation exposure for each person. Results Sixty-three percent of the residents who responded to the questionnaire were considered as ever-exposed and 1% of them had a total cumulative dose of more than 10 mSv. The mean (minimum, maximum) duration of radiation exposure was 4.75 years (0.08, 11.98) and the geometric mean (minimum, maximum) of the total cumulative dose was 0.049 mSv (<0.001, 35.35) in the exposed. Conclusions An individual exposure assessment was performed for an epidemiological study to estimate the health risk among residents living in the vicinity of $^{137}Cs$ contaminated roads. The average exposure dose in the exposed people was less than 5% of the current guideline.

Comparison of the Frequency Bands for the Wireless Sensor Networks in the Building Environment

In this paper, for the pratical building envoronments, the propagation properties of the electromagnetic waves of the sub-1GHz bands, including the 447MHz, 868MHz, and 715MHz, and the 2.4GHz band are experimentally observed in therms of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) value. The compasion of the frequency bands can be utilized to efficiently construct the wireless sensor networks (WSN) for the building automation control. In order to measure the RSSI values in the building, an RSSI measurement system is first designed, in which the master part can transmit data packets and measure the corresponding RSSI values, and the slave part can respond the received data packets. Using the measurement system, the RSSI values are then experimentally measured at four types of building enviroments. From the experimental result analysis, we could notice that the sub-1GHz, especially the 447MHz band, showd a good communication performance for the building environment and could provide an efficient WSN construction when the data rate is relatively low.

Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is known as an oil seed crop originated from southern Asia. Chemical components of safflower have been reported such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, quinochalcones and others. It is vastly utilized in various medical conditions and used for flavoring and coloring purpose. Thus, we examined the amount of total phenolic contents (TPC) and investigated the relation between morphological characters with the TPC in 210 accessions from RDA genebank, Korea. TPC was estimated with Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric assay. Variations in TPC were evaluated from 21.9 to 147 ㎍ GAE/mg dried extract (DE). Correlation showed there were significant inverse correlations of TPC with leaf width and length while others were not related with TPC. The red color of flower had the lowest range of TPC. The maximum and minimum of TPC was all in the yellow color of flower. Biplot analysis revealed that the positive contributors of Dim1 were leaf width, length, flowering and weight of 100 seeds. Meanwhile, Dim2 was mostly contributed by ripening stage. Accessions K185021 containing high TPC could be used for further research in developing new varieties and functional products.
