Teacher Beliefs and Extensive Reading (ER): Articulating the Ambiguities of ER Principles
Park,Laura Eunae 이화여자대학교 교과교육연구소 2016 교과교육학연구 Vol.20 No.2
This study explored the beliefs and experiences of six student teachers enrolled in a teaching practicum, which was an elective course in an MA TESOL program at a private university in Seoul. The teaching practicum also functioned as an after-school extensive reading (ER) program for 20 high school students from a co-ed private high school who volunteered to participate in the program. The student teachers met with the high school students during a 10 week period, and the student teachers led the class with ER activities based on the weekly reading assignments. Throughout the program, the student teachers worked in small groups and took turns team-teaching the class. Prior to the ER lessons, the student teachers participated in a four-week training program in which they received instructions on ER theory and approaches; furthermore, they worked in small groups and developed teaching materials and lesson plans together. The student teachers also participated in two focus group interviews with the researcher after completion of the program. Findings of the study indicate that their beliefs and perceptions toward extensive reading were ambiguous and they had very little confidence in themselves as role models of ER. This study suggests that teachers not only need to gain first-hand experience in ER themselves, but they also need an opportunity to articulate their beliefs and perceptions toward ER, which must become much more tangible for them.

Objective: This study aims to develop a measurement tool for the shifting ability as an Executive Functions (EF) in Virtual Environment (VE) based on the theory of embodied cognition. Background: Most of conventional EF measurement tools show an 18-20% difference between measured value through the questionnaires and ability of daily practices, which leads to dysfunctional problems in everyday life. Method: We designed a shifting measurement tool in VE. A measurement tool was developed by creating the scenario for organizing books on a bookshelf according to specific rules through an expert-based evaluation in a VE. (Color, Shape, Category) Using this measurement tool, we gained the tasks score data, duration, and the behavioral data of hand and head from 12 healthy adults(20-30s) and analyzed the data. Results: Using this Shifting measurement tool, we gain the behavioral data of hands and head, and tasks scores data from 12 participants. It is compared with the behavioral data of hand and head movement according to the task score. Conclusion: Findings of this study could be used to evaluate existing measurements and enhance a newly developed shifting measurement tool.

Most of the wheat germ in cereal grains is removed during the milling process. Various physiological effects have been reported for bioactive substances in wheat germ such as phenolic acids and flavonoids. In this study, the antioxidant and anti-adipogenic effects of ethanol extracts from wheat germ (WGE) and wheat germ fermented with Aspergillus oryzae (F-WGE) were investigated in HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells. The anti-oxidant activity of F-WGE was demonstrated by a dose-dependent increase in the enhanced scavenging capacity of hydroxyl radicals and $Cu^{2+}$-chelating activity compared to WGE. WGE and F-WGE treatment at doses between 10 and $400{\mu}g/mL$ did not affect the viability of HepG2 and 3T3-L1 cells. Intracellular ROS levels from $Cu^{2+}$-induced oxidative stress were significantly decreased by F-WGE treatment in HepG2 cells compared to WGE. Lipid accumulation was increased in 3T3-L1 adipocytes by $100{\mu}M$ $Fe^{2+}$ treatment, but the accumulation was strongly inhibited by $100{\mu}g/mL$ of WGE and F-WGE treatment. These results suggest that changes in bioactive substances during the fermentation of wheat germ can potentiate scavenging activities against transition metal-induced oxidative stress and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Therefore, we propose that F-WGE is a novel food materials and provided scientific evidences for its efficacy in the development of functional foods.
Extensive Reading for Korean EFL Learners : Motivation as an Investment in Cultural Capital
Park, Laura Eunae 이화여자대학교 사범대학 교과교육연구소 2013 교과교육학연구 Vol.17 No.4
This study describes the process of implementing an after-school extensive reading program for Korean high school students. During a two-year period, the researcher set up an extensive reading program as an extracurricular activity for a group of Korean high school students who volunteered to participate in the program. In addition, the program operated as a teaching practica for MA TESOL students who were enrolled in the course as partial fulfillment for their MA degree. In order to practice their teaching skills in an authentic learning environment, the MA students took on the role of the teachers of the extensive reading program. The MA students met with the high school students once a week for approximately eight weeks each semester and guided them with extensive reading activities based on the weekly reading assignments. Drawing from the researcher's observations, excerpts from the MA students' online journals along with excerpts from a semi-structured interview with a high school student and his mother, this study concludes with implications to consider for implementing an extensive reading program for Korean high school students.
