Is Dynasty a Clone of Dallas ?: Reading Formations for Cultural Politics in Consumer Culture*

In January, 1981, Dynasty took to the air, while Dallas overtook as the most high-rated television program in America. This paper will argue that the public and private reaction to Dynasty should be understood in context of the role of T.V. media in consumer culture. Dynasty and Dallas are both shown to represent the mass desires of consumers because they are versions of the perennial myth of the American Dream, linked as it is with the Western cowboy myth as a dominant political and national self-image. It is shown that Dynasty, especially, dealt with the issues of gender and sexuality in the Reagan era. Also revealed is the fact that Dynasty primarily projected an upper-class ambience of consumer culture through its openness toward sexuality that was an important feature of American culture in Reagan’s America. Focus is given to the key role of Alexis, who is portrayed as an aggressive, power-hungry, and enormously successful career woman. The paper concludes showing that the commercial success of Dynasty occurred despite the fact that female economic and socio-sexual power and male gay sensibility are somewhat slippery phenomenon not easily identifiable with by innumerable televisual subjects.

Many topics in science, especially, abstract concepts, relationships, properties, entities in invisible ranges, are described in mathematical representations such as formula, numbers, symbols, and graphs. Although the mathematical representation is an essential tool to better understand scientific phenomena, the mathematical element is pointed out as a reason for learning difficulty and losing interests in science. In order to further investigate the relationship between mathematics knowledge and science understanding, the current study examined 793 high school students` understanding of the pH value. As a measure of the molar concentration of hydrogen ions in the solution, the pH value is an appropriate example to explore what a student mathematical structure of logarithm is and how they interpret the proportional relationship of numbers for scientific explanation. To the end, students were asked to write their responses on a questionnaire that is composed of nine content domain questions and four affective domain questions. Data analysis of this study provides information for the relationship between student understanding of the pH value and related mathematics knowledge.

Reduction Characteristics of Electromagnetic Penetration through Narrow Slots in Conducting Screen

This paper presents the reduction characteristics of penetrated electromagnetic fields through a narrow slot in a planar conducting screen of infinite extent. When a plane wave is excited to the narrow slot, the aperture electric field is controlled by the parallel wire or parallel plate connected on the slot. The magnitude of penetrated electromagnetic fields through a narrow slot is controlled by electric field distributions on the slot. An integral equation for the aperture electric field on narrow slots is derived and solved by applying Galerkin's method of moments. The results show that the magnitude of the penetrated electromagnetic field can be effectively reduced by installing the parallel wire or parallel plate on the slot.

Effect of Neck Position on Muscle Fatigue during Shaker Exercise

Objective: The aim of this study is to find the influence on muscle fatigue by changing an angle of neck while Shaker exercise. Background: Shaker exercise is commonly applied to dysphagia patients for strengthen suprahyoid muscle(SHM) and relaxing upper esophageal sphincter. Method: Experiments were conducted by measuring muscle fatigue with surface electromyography(SEMG) in case of neck 15° and 50° flexion, in addition to original method. For the study 30 undergraduate students were participated as subjects. Muscle fatigue was measured with variations of median frequency(MF) and median frequency slope(MFS) by attaching SEMG to 3 muscles. At the same time, perceived exertion was measured by using Borg"s rating of perceived exertion(RPE). Results: A MF was increased when low angle in SHM, both male and female. It means that muscle fatigue was significantly decreased(p<.05). RPE was significantly increased when low angle(p<.01). Perceived exertion explained 15.2% of the variation of MF in SHM. And regression equation was, MF in SHM = 59.918 + (4,910 * RPE). Conclusion: The outcome shows that it is possible to use the efficient method which makes muscle fatigue decrease by reducing the angle of neck flexion. Application: The results might contribute to develop the effective Shaker exercise method.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a noninvasive and safe technique for motor cortex stimulation. TMS is used to treat neurological and psychiatric disorders, including mood and movement disorders. TMS can also treat several types of chronic neuropathic pain. The pain relief mechanism of cortical stimulation is caused by modifications in neuronal excitability. Depression is a common co-morbidity with chronic pain. Pain and depression should be treated concurrently to achieve a positive outcome. Insomnia also frequently occurs with chronic lower back pain. Several studies have proposed hypotheses for TMS pain management. Herein, we report two cases with positive results for the treatment of depression and insomnia with chronic low back pain by TMS.

Herbicides application to control invasive weeds is crucial for its proper management. However, the physiological response for susceptibility or tolerance of any weed species may differ vastly according to the type of herbicides application. Hence, appropriate type of herbicide selection with optimum doses would play a prominent role to control the weed incidence and distribution on any ecological state. Since, L. amplexicaule is rapidly invading the Korean productive land, it has generated a possible threat for eco-system as well as agricultural production. Considering these facts, we have screened different herbicides and estimated the appropriate doses to control L. amplexicaule. Our results showed that, Glufosinate P rapidly disintegrated the chlorophyll content as compared to other herbicides and significantly dropped the morphological attributes such as root length, shoot length and fresh biomass of L. amplexicaule plants. Moreover, two-fold application of glufosinate P could minimize 94% growth rate of L. amplexicaule. Hence, the current results recommend two-fold application of glufosinate P for optimum control of L. amplexicaule.

Hydrochlorothiazide use and risk of skin cancer: A nationwide retrospective cohort study in Korea

Background: Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) is the one of the most commonly prescribed antihypertensive drug and recent data has shown an association between HCTZ use and skin cancer (SC). However, there have been no studies about HCTZ use and the risk of SC in Asian population. Objectives: Examine the risk of SC in the cohort of Korean hypertension patients. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, population-based cohort study using database from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment (HIRA) Service from 2009 to 2016. The risk of SC was evaluated by multivariable Cox proportional hazard ratio (HR) modeling. Covariates included age, sex, comorbidities and prior history of photosensitizing drugs and other medications known to potentially affect the SC risk. Results: A total of 1,714,590 patients with HCTZ-users and 1,851,362 of non-HCTZ users were enrolled. The overall risk of SC was 42.67 and 40.23 per 1000,000 person-years in HCTZ-users and non-HCTZ users, respectively. Compared with non-HCTZ users, no statistically significant associations with the risk of all SC in HCTZ-users (HR=0.97, 95% CI, 0.93-1.02, p=0.26). Whereas, the risk of melanoma was decreased in the HCTZ-users (HR=0.89, 95% CI, 0.81-0.99, p=0.03), and no statistically significant association was seen in the risk of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) (HR=0.99, 95% CI, 0.94-1.04, p=0.77). Conclusion: Use of HCTZ use maybe associated with decreased risk of melanoma, and no association in the risk of NMSC.

Toward Multiculturalism through American Ethnic Studies in the Globalizing World

This paper aims to develop several ideas of multiculturalism, American ethnic studies, and American globalization to better understand the relationships among them. The U.S. can be a center of globalization process. While the term ‘globalization’ originates from the area of international trade and business, this paper tries to focus on the cultural aspects of globalization. Academia and government in the U.S. have developed policies emphasizing ethnic diversity and multiculturalism that embrace incoming immigrants. Ethnic studies is an area in academia to understand others and intersect the common experience among different cultures in the U.S. While many Americans try to de-emphasize racial differences, ethnicity emerges as rather an important term in the process of globalization in the U.S. Different and diverse cultures in the U.S. are exposed to the mass with their own ways of lives, religions, food, and customs, but they still believe all of them are Americans enough to assume the same American identity. This paper attempts to define globalization, which is quite different from American nationalism, imperialism, or internationalism. Globalization exists somewhere between the First World metropolitan global city and the Third World NGO’s indigenous area, between multiculturalism and ethnicity. It has its own “world system” by intervening in international civil society. With a global spirit people go with transnational idea, and migrate to several metropolitan global cities to earn money. Most of the monetary fund is poured into the global cities, where people enjoy their diverse and unique cultures in their own imagined community. That is the reason ethnic belonging and ethnic studies should be embraced as part of globalization in the U.S. In conclusion, this paper contends that a vision that the equality of multicultural phenomena in the U.S. can accomplish the ideal model of globalization for the world. So everybody who tries to move toward globalism feels at home even in a global city, and they can succeed in their pursuits of reaching beyond nationalism.
