The purpose of this research is to verify the validity, reliability and item goodness of the assessment criteria used in the Comprehensive Assessment Model for Early Childhood Education & Care Institutions(hereinafter the Model), reconfigured by Ok-seung Yang in 2001. The research selected 158 kindergartens and 168 childcare centers in the Seoul area and assessed them using the Model as well as the Early Childhood Education Program Assessment Scale (convenient version) and the Childcare Facility Assessment Standard. The Model showed a common factor validity of .78 with the Early Childhood Education Program Assessment Scale (convenient version) and .83 with the Childcare Facility Assessment Standard, which are both strong correlations. According to the reliability analysis, Cronbachs α coefficient was found to be a considerably high .96 overall. Even for each area, Cronbachs α value was spread between .84 and .94. The results of the discrimination analysis showed that none of the 78 items presented a low degree of discrimination and only 2 were found to be inappropriate, which is in general an acceptable level. Based on such results, the Model was considered to be a valid and reliable scale for comprehensively assessing both kindergartens and childcare centers in Korea.
Sarcomatoid Carcinoma Arising from Mature Cystic Teratoma

Malignant transformation of mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is rare. Sarcomatoid carcinoma is a neoplasm comprising malignant mesenchymal cells and a conventional carcinomatous area. Here, we report on a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma arising from an MCT in the left ovary of a 45-year-old female. A unilocular cyst consistent with MCT was observed; however, a nodule within the cyst was confirmed from the resected ovary. Microscopically, the nodule showed both squamous cell carcinoma and pleomorphic sarcomatous components admixing with each other. Lining epithelial cells at the periphery of the main tumor showed squamous metaplasia. When a sarcomatous component is observed in the ovary tumor, it is important to find a squamous cell component, either benign or malignant.

Antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory effect of ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of phenolic extract from dried persimmon (Diospyros kaki Thumb.) were investigated on THP-1 human acute monocytic leukemia cells. Phenolic extract of dried persimmon was sequentially fractionized using five different solvents, hexane, chloroform, EtOAc, butanol, and water, among which EtOAc fraction showed the highest antioxidant capacity. Cytotoxicity of THP-1 cells pretreated with the EtOAc fraction and curcumin was determined by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Curcumin and the EtOAc fraction showed respective cytotoxicities at 30 and 100 μg/mL. Expression level of proinflammatory tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) was quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. TNF-α production was significantly inhibited by curcumin and the EtOAc fraction at 20 and 50 μg/mL, respectively. These results showed that phenolic compounds of dried persimmon alleviated the augmentation of TNF-α level induced by lipopolysaccharide in THP-1 cells, suggesting that dietary uptake of dried persimmon may be beneficial to promote anti-inflammation.
Feasibility and Effects of a Tai Chi Self-Help Education Program for Korean Gastric Cancer Survivors

<P>Purpose/Objectives: To determine the feasibility of conducting a study of a tai chi self-help education program in Korean adults with gastric cancer and to describe the effects of a six-month tai chi self-help education program on depression, health-related quality of life (HRQOL), and immune markers.Design: One-group, pre- and post-test design.Setting: Outpatient clinics of two large hospitals in the Republic of Korea.Sample: Convenience sample of 33 Korean adults with gastric cancer diagnoses after gastrectomy.Methods: The Korean gastric cancer survivors participated in a 24-week tai chi self-help education program. The participants completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (Korean version) and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (Korean version) for HRQOL and provided blood samples for immune markers. All measurements were conducted at baseline and at one week following the 24-week intervention.Main Research Variables: Feasibility was determined as the percentage of participants completing the 24-week protocol. Preliminary data on depression, HRQOL, and immune markers were obtained.Findings: The dropout rate was 36.4%; 21 of 33 survivors participated in the tai chi self-help education program for 24 weeks. No complications or injuries occurred to the participants during the program. No significant differences were noted in depression, HRQOL, and immune markers before and after the intervention.Conclusions: Tai chi exercise, in combination with a self-help program, can be safe and feasible for Korean gastric cancer survivors. This feasibility study did not show that the tai chi self-help education program improves depression, HRQOL, and immune markers in Korean gastric cancer survivors.Implications for Nursing: Additional studies are needed to determine the long-term impact relative to usual care.</P>

Phosphorylated extracellular signal-regulated kinase (pERK) mediates neuronal synaptic plasticity, long-term potentiation, and learning and memory in the hippocampus. In this study, we examined pERK1/2 immunoreactivity and its protein level in the gerbil hippocampus at various ages. In the postnatal month 1 (PM 1) group, very weak pERK1/2 immunoreactivity was detected in the hippocampus. In the CA1 region, pERK1/2 immunoreactivity was considerably increased in the stratum pyramidale in the PM 6 group. Thereafter, pERK1/2 immunoreactivity was decreased. In the CA2/3 region, pERK1/2 immunoreactivity increased in an age-dependent manner until PM 12. Thereafter, numbers of pERK1/2-immunoreactive neurons were decreased. However, in the mossy fiber zone, pERK1/2 immunostaining became stronger with age. In the dentate gyrus, a few pERK1/2-immunoreactive cells were observed until PM 12. In the PM 18 and 24 groups, numbers of pERK1/2-immunoreactive cells were increased, especially in the polymorphic layer. In Western blot analysis, pERK1/2 level in the gerbil hippocampus was increased with age. These results indicate that total pERK1/2 levels are increased in the hippocampus with age. However pERK1/2 immunoreactivity in subregions of the gerbil hippocampus was changed with different pattern during normal aging.
Expression of Human Lactoferrin Gene in Transgenic Rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Lactoferrin is an 80-kDa iron-binding glycoprotein known to exert many biological activities, such as facilitating iron absorption and having antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Rice can be a useful target for edible food plants to introduce human lactoferrin, because it has lower allergenicity and is likely to be safer than microorganisms or transgenic animals. A cDNA fragment encoding human lactoferrin (HLF) driven by the maize polyubiquitin promoter, along with herbicide resistance gene (bar) driven by CaMV 35S promoter, was introduced into rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Dong Jin) using the Agrobacterium -mediated transformation system. Putative transformants were initially selected on the medium containing bialaphos. The stable integration of the bar and HLF genes into transgenic rice plants was further confirmed through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot analyses. The expression of the full length HLF protein from various tissues such as grains and young leaves of transgenic rice was verified by Western blot analysis. Analysis of progeny also demonstrated that introduced genes were stably inherited to the next generation at the Mendelian fashion.
