Post-fracture Stimulation of in Vitro Osteogenesis Is Not Systemic

Locally active post-fracture stimulation of in vitro osteogenesis was observed in this laboratory by Tibone and Bernard (1982). They found that rabbit femoral bone marrow showed a significant increase in the number of in vitro osteogenic colonies when collected 24 hours after antecedent fracture, compared to marrow from unfractured controls. Using the same tissue culture methods for counting bone colonies as a bioassay, we compared bone colonies from marrow cells obtained before and after surgical fracture of the contralateral fenur and found no significant difference in number of bone colonies formed. Comparing these results with those of Tibone and Bernard (1982), our conclusion is that a fracture causes local stimulation of the osteogenic cells of marrow, which is not manifested systemically.

This research aimed to evaluate the eff ectiveness of hot water (43–53 °C · 5 min −1 ; 47 °C · 2–6 min −1 ), 1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP) at 50–300 nL L −1 and a combination of hot water (47/49 °C · 5 min −1 ) and phosphite (40% P 2 O 5 + 20% K 2 O; 40%P 2 O 5 + 10% Zn) in anthracnose control and the eff ect on fruit quality [fresh weight loss (FWL—%); pH, total soluble solids(TSS—°Brix), and titratable acidity (TA = % citric acid (CA)] of passion fruit ( Passifl ora edulis f. fl avicarpa ) at the postharveststage. When the fruits were in the stage of 0% dehydration and fully yellow peels, they were disinfested and inoculatedwith Colletotrichum gloeosporioides . They were then subjected to the above mentioned treatments; this was followedby incubation for 120 h. The diameter of the disease lesions was monitored daily. After the incubation, a physico-chemicalanalysis was performed. Hot-water treatment resulted in disease reduction at 47 and 49 °C for 4 and 5 min. The combinationof hot-water treatment at 47 °C (4 or 5 min) and application of the phosphite of K or Zn signifi cantly reduced diseaseseverity in fruits. The 1-MCP treatment reduced anthracnose severity in passion fruit mainly at 200 nL L −1 · 24 h −1 . None ofthe treatments signifi cantly changed the physico-chemical characteristics of the fruit [FWL (2.6–4.1%); pH (3.2–3.5), TSS(8.9–10.9 °Brix), and TA (1.8–2.5% CA)].

<P>The use of virus based materials for nanotechnology applications has increased in recent years owing to their straightforward production, their ability to undergo surface modifications, and their inherently predictable structures. We show that the negatively charged surface of the native fd phage (virus) could facilitate ionic cross-linking via multivalent cobalt ions having opposite charge. Subsequent adsorption of magnetite to the cobalt/phage fibers allowed a high surface area network of cobalt and magnetite which was easily retrievable from solution using a simple magnet. With native fd phage as the template, we demonstrated the room temperature assembly of a cobalt/magnetite/phage nanofiber network. Formation of a catalytically active Co-B coating on the surface of the network structure was achieved by reduction with sodium borohydride. Examining the chemically reduced network, we found it may serve as a catalyst for controlled production of hydrogen gas from sodium borohydride. The embedded magnetite nanoparticles allowed for removal of the catalytic network, which can be of benefit for reactions requiring controlled timing of product formation such as for 'on demand' hydrogen generation.</P>

Background: The 155° Grammont reverse shoulder replacement has a long track record of success, but also a high radiographic notching rate. The increased distance between the scapular pillar and the humeral component theoretically decreases postoperative notching. The glenoid component can be shifted inferiorly relative to the glenoid; however, there also is some concern that shifting the glenoid component too far inferiorly (inferior glenoid component overhang > 3.5 mm) may compromise long-term stability of the glenoid component. This study was conducted to determine if clinical outcomes, scapular notching, and complications vary with more inferior placement of the glenoid component. Methods: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data was performed in order to compare radiographic outcomes (notching rate and signs of glenoid loosening or component disassembly) and clinical outcomes (range of motion, Constant score, subjective shoulder value, and complication rate) of all patients who underwent reverse shoulder replacement with the glenosphere positioned either flush with the inferior rim of the glenoid (flush group) or with at least 3.5 mm of inferior overhang (overhang group) at a minimum follow-up of 60 months. Ninety-seven patients ultimately met the inclusion criteria, with 41 patients with flush glenoid component and 56 patients with at least 3.5 mm of inferior overhang. Results: Average follow-up was 97.8 months. The overhang group had a lower rate of radiographic notching (37% vs. 82.5%, p < 0.05), better clinical outcomes (improvement in Constant score: +40 vs. +32, p = 0.036), and higher subjective shoulder value (79 vs. 69, p = 0.026) than the flush group. No difference in complications between groups was found. Conclusions: In this study, at least 3.5 mm of inferior glenosphere overhang relative to the inferior rim of the glenoid was associated with the lower notching rate without negative effect on the clinical outcomes in 155° Grammont-style reverse shoulder replacement. Therefore, no increase in complications should be expected when using this surgical technique.

Shape memory alloys are mainly used in medical devices and surgical implants due to their biocompatibility. Machining these alloys into intricate patterns can be challenging due to their poor thermal conductivity which could lead to a poor surface finish. The poor surface finish causes a release of toxic elements such as Nickel, leading to contact allergies and thus deteriorating its biocompatibility. Using the right cooling technology can help improve their machinability and overcome issues related to surface integrity. The current study investigates the effect of milling parameters (cutting-speed, feed rate, and depth of cut) and different cooling strategies (flood coolant, cryogenic liquid nitrogen, and a hybrid approach) on the surface integrity of F2063 Ni55.6Ti44.4 shape memory alloy. In addition, the effect of cryogenically treating the cutting tool for further enhancement of surface finish was investigated. A considerable modification on the milled surfaces was observed when using the hybrid cooling/milling approach and cryo-treated tools in terms of morphological, chemical compositional, crystallographic, and microhardness. In addition, this modified surface had a noticeably improved bioactivity due to enhanced hydrophobicity (with contact angle 92°) and surface topography (Ra: 341.69 nm), which favoured cell adhesion and proliferation. The results indicate that the modified Ni55.6Ti44.4 alloy surface might be adequate for use in medical applications.

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a root that allows healthy eating and combats malnutrition. There is a need for more productive sweet potato genotypes displaying good resistance and a favorable appearance and shape. New genotypes that are more productive, resistant to the main soil pests and with good physical characteristics would contribute to meet the needs of producers and the demands of consumers. The aim of this study was to develop and select sweet potato genotypes regarding agronomic and physical root parameters. The new genotypes were obtained through the cross-linking of 22 parents with commercial characteristics. Subsequently, 386 experimental genotypes were conducted in the feld in an experimental design consisting of augmented blocks with intercalated controls. Aspects related to agronomic, physical root characteristics and resistance to Euscepes postfasciatus were explored. Genotypes with higher performance than the controls were identifed for all assessed parameters. The genotypes UZBD-K-09, UZBD-K-56 and UZBD-K-78, with purple fesh roots, UZBD-F-15 and UZBD-F-34, with orange fesh, and UZBD-K-70, with a white fesh were selected.

Objective To assess the correlation between different pain symptoms and different domains of women's health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Methods Seventy-seven women with deep infiltrating endometriosis were successively enrolled between June 2011 and August 2013 while being prepared to undergo laparoscopy due to pain and/or infertility. We quantified the intensities of dysmenorrhea, deep dyspareunia, chronic pelvic pain, and dyschezia (menstrual and non-menstrual) using a 11-point visual analog scale (VAS: 0-10) and the validated full versions of the Short Form 36 (SF36) and Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP30) questionnaires to assess HRQoL. The pain symptoms were considered simultaneously in a hierarchical agglomerative clustering method (exploratory multivariate approach) and the associations among scores were tested by bivariate correlation. Results Dysmenorrhea showed the lowest similarity on to the multivariate cluster analysis and no statistically significant correlation with the other pain symptoms: deep dyspareunia (P=0.244), chronic pelvic pain (P=0.108), menstrual dyschezia (P=0.238), and non-menstrual dyschezia (P=0.380). Dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain were the main symptoms correlated with all domains of the SF36 and the EHP30 (core instrument) questionnaires (P<0.05). Conclusion Dysmenorrhea and chronic pelvic pain were independent factors associated with HRQoL.

This study aimed to answer the question through a systematic review: Can carbamide peroxide be as effective as hydrogen peroxide and cause less in-office bleaching sensitivity? A literature survey was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, ISI Web of Science, and gray literature. Primary clinical trials that compared the efficacy or the in-office bleaching sensitivity between carbamide and hydrogen peroxides were included. The risk of bias was evaluated using the RoB2. The certainty of the evidence was assessed using the GRADE approach. DPI training significantly improved the mean scores of the dental undergraduates from 7.53 in the pre-DPI-training test to 9.01 in the post-DPI-training test (p < 0.001). After 6 weeks, the mean scores decreased marginally to 8.87 in the retention test (p = 0.563). DPI training increased their confidence level from 5.68 pre-DPI training to 7.09 post-DPI training. The limited evidence suggests that the 37% carbamide peroxide may be similarly effective to the 35% hydrogen peroxide for bleaching teeth in-office and causes less bleaching sensitivity. However, more well-designed split-mouth clinical trials are necessary to strengthen the evidence.
