Light Mediated Yeast Cell Growth and Metabolism

In this paper the effect of light on non-aerated Baker's Yeast(Saccharomyces cereuisiae) production and the protein excretion to the extracellular fluid is studied. Previous results in our laboratory indicate that at pH=5 and T-32$^{\circ}C$ yeast may be affected by light, but those differences seem to be within statistical variation of the data. In this paper, cell and extracellular protein concentrations along with redox potential are monitored for batch fermentations in the presence and absence of light at pH levels of 3 and 5 and at 31$^{\circ}C$, in order to explore whether possible light effects can be more readily discerned at lower pH values. Yeast particle size distributions are also determined over the course of fermentation using a particle counter in order to add one more measuring tool to our usual cell and total protein measurements. An apparently noticeable difference in the redox potential is observed between the light and the dark runs for early times for the pH=3 runs. The particle size distributions show differences in the particle diameters between light and dark runs at pH=3, but those differences fall within one standard deviation of the mean particle diameters.
Boys, Masculinities and Juvenile Justice

Culture and tradition are part of the macrosystem of ideas and beliefs that have a dramatic effect on children and families. One aspect of culture is gender beliefs, values and roles. Feminist analysis has explored the incorporation of gender in a wide range of structures, challenging gender bias and advocating reform of a range of laws, structural systems, and social practices. Masculinities analysis, an outgrowth of feminist analysis that focuses on men as gendered subjects, provides a perspective to consider those areas in which men are disproportionately present either in positions of power and privilege, or in positions of disadvantage. The juvenile justice system is a place where boys are the primarily objects of the system. Yet it is a system that rarely considers boys as gendered subjects. This article examines the perspective that masculinities scholarship would bring to evaluating and reforming the juvenile justice system.
Effect of Health Information Technology Expenditure on Patient Level Cost

Objectives: This study investigate the effect of health information technology (IT) expenditure on individual patient-level cost using California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) data obtained from 2000 to 2007. Methods: We used a traditional cost function and applied hospital fixed effect and clustered error within hospitals. Results: We found that a quadratic function of IT expenditure best fit the data. The quadratic function in IT expenditure predicts a decrease in cost of up to US$1,550 of IT labor per bed, US$27,909 of IT capital per bed, and US$28,695 of all IT expenditure per bed. Moreover, we found that IT expenditure reduced costs more quickly in medical conditions than surgical diseases. Conclusions: Interest in health IT is increasing more than ever before. Many studies examined the effect of health IT on hospital level cost. However, there have been few studies to examine the relationship between health IT expenditure and individual patient-level cost. We found that IT expenditure was associated with patient cost. In particular, we found a quadratic relationship between IT expenditure and patient-level cost. In other word, patient-level cost is non-linearly (or a polynomial of second-order degree) related to IT expenditure.

Pulvinaria urbicola Cockerell, a pulvinariine soft scale (Hemiptera: Coccidae), is a broad host-plant generalist, produces honeydew and is commonly tended by ants, including the invasive yellow crazy ant Anoplolepis gracilipes Smith and big-headed ant Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius). Pu. urbicola is implicated in dieback of forest dominated by Pisonia grandis (Nyctaginaceae) on many Indo-Pacific islands. Here we report detection of Pu. urbicola on Christmas Island (Indian Ocean), describe the potential impacts of the association of this trophobiontwith introduced ants, and briefly outline biosecurity and management issues. On Christmas Island, Pu. urbicola represents a threat to stands of Pi. grandis, potentially threatens the dominant forest tree Pi. umbellifera, and could exacerbate supercolony formation and impacts of the yellow crazy ant.
