Demographics and clinical features of trachyonychia: Korean bi-center study

Background: Although the trachyonychia is widely known nail disorder, demographics and clinical features were rarely been studied in Korean literature. Objectives: To investigate demographics and clinical features of trachyonychia patients Methods: We included 216 trachyonychia patients who visited Pusan National University Hospital (Busan and Yangsan) over a 16-year period (2003-2018). We reviewed medical records and clinical photographs retrospectively. Results: Sex ratio was 1 : 1.88 (M : F). Onset age showed double peak on 0~10 year-old group (17.6%) and 41~50 year-old group (26.9%). Housewife was the most common occupation (27%), followed by restaurant, bakery, and bar workers (19.5%), nursing or caregiver (8.2%), chemical or metal processor (7.5%) and clothing makers (6.3%). Associated nail diseases were observed in 7.4% of total patients (onychomycosis 4.6%, paronychia 2.3%). Concomitant dermatologic diseases were observed in 25.5% of total patients (hand/foot eczema 9.7%, alopecial areata 7.9%, psoriasis 3.2%). 34.3% felt itching sensation and 9.3% felt pain. Clinically, 37% showed opaque trachyonychia, 72.7% showed ragged cuticle and 30.6% showed periungual erythema. Conclusion: To our knowledge, dermographics and clinical features of trachyonychia have rarely been studied worldwidely including Korea. The result of this study could be helpful when encountering trachyonychia.
Determination of Drying Pattern of Radish Slabs under Different Drying Methods Using Imaging Process

Drying kinetics and pattern in the thin layer of radish slabs were determined in this study. Drying was performed in lab-scale combination dryer. Combination dryer has consisted of hot air temperature and velocity controller and microwave power supply that preset microwave power level could be manually controlled range from 0 to 1000 W. The applied hot air temperature and velocity was 5 m/s and 50 and 70 °C, respectively, and preset microwave power levels were 50 W. Radish slabs, approximately 40×40 mm in area and 5 mm in thickness, was used for the experiment. Drying kinetics of radish slabs under hot air drying, microwave drying, and microwave - hot air combination drying were compared and the drying pattern such as moisture evaporation pattern on radish slabs subjected to different drying methods was visualized with the application of hyperspectral image processing. As a result, an opposite drying pattern was obtained at hot-air drying and microwave drying. The dried samples by hot air had a higher moisture content at the center than the edge. In contrast, dried samples by microwave had a higher moisture content was observed in edge side. Hence, the combination of opposite drying pattern led to the results that a relatively uniform drying pattern of radish slabs during the drying process. In particular, drying uniformity was improved when simultaneous hot air temperature at 70 °C and microwave drying. The results showed that drying uniformity of radish slabs could be improved by combined hot air and microwave drying method, with the advantages of shortening drying time.
Granuloma pyogenicum-like nodule on scrotum: can you consider a perianal fistula?

To dermatologists, it is important to keep in mind the connectivity with internal organs when examining skin lesions around the mouth and anus. The report or knowledge of cutaneous odontogenic fistula is relatively well established in dermatology, but not for perianal fistula. A 53-year-old man presented with erythematous erosive nodule on scrotum for 5 years. He underwent incision and drainage at surgical clinic several times with recurrent abscess. We conducted incisions under the clinical impression of granuloma pyogenicum, a large amount of pus was released from the lesion. A biopsy specimen showed mixed inflammation with lymphocytes, neutrophils, and plasma cells. An indurated cord-like structure beneath the skin from the scrotal lesion toward the internal anal canal was revealed on palpation at the follow-up physical examination. Magnetic resonance imaging showed low signal intensity track like lesion from the anus to right ischioanal fossa presuming transsphincteric perianal fistula. Thus, the patient underwent fistulectomy and had no recurrence thereafter. The external opening of perianal fistula is most likely to occur on the perianal area, but may also occur in scrotum which is relatively distant from anus as in this case. Therefore, the dermatologist should perform a detailed physical examination encountering recurrent inflammatory lesion on the scrotum and perianal area.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Amino acids (glycine and alanine) and ionic liquids ([BMIM][BF<SUB>4</SUB>] and [BMIM][I]) were examined for their inhibition effects on CH<SUB>4</SUB> hydrates with experimental and computational approaches. Both amino acids and ionic liquids functioned well as thermodynamic hydrate inhibitors, by shifting equilibrium curves of CH<SUB>4</SUB> hydrates toward harsh conditions. However, powder X-ray diffraction patterns indicated that amino acids and ionic liquids did not affect the hydrate structure because they were not included in the hydrate cages due to their large molecular size. Gas uptake measurements showed that the conversion of water into gas hydrates and the formation rates of CH<SUB>4</SUB> hydrate were significantly influenced by inhibitors. Density functional theory calculations indicated that [BMIM][BF<SUB>4</SUB>] had a larger potential than glycine to inhibit gas hydrate formation by giving a more negative interaction energy between a cage and an inhibitor molecule. The time-dependent Raman spectra collected during CH<SUB>4</SUB> hydrate formation demonstrated that [BMIM][BF<SUB>4</SUB>] hindered CH<SUB>4</SUB> molecules from occupying small (5<SUP>12</SUP>) cages, whereas glycine had a strong influence on large (5<SUP>12</SUP>6<SUP>2</SUP>) cages of sI hydrates. The experimental and computational results provide a better understanding of inhibition mechanisms of gas hydrates and thus can contribute to the improved control of hydrate formation in oil and gas pipelines.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We examine CH<SUB>4</SUB> hydrates in the presence of inhibitors for hydrate control. </LI> <LI> We use amino acids and ionic liquids to examine inhibition mechanisms. </LI> <LI> Inhibitors do not affect the structure of CH<SUB>4</SUB> hydrate. </LI> <LI> Glycine and [BMIM][BF<SUB>4</SUB>] inhibit large 5<SUP>12</SUP>6<SUP>2</SUP> cages and small 5<SUP>12</SUP> cages, respectively. </LI> </UL> </P>

The paired immunoglobulin-like type 2 receptor (PILR) family consists of two functionally opposite members, inhibitory $PILR{\alpha}$ and activating $PILR{\beta}$ receptors. PILRs are widely expressed in various immune cells and interact with their ligands, especially CD99 expressed on activated T cells, to participate in immune responses. Here we investigated whether PILR-derived agonists inhibit ${\beta}1$ integrin activity as ligands for CD99. PILR-derived peptides as well as PILR-Fc fusion proteins prevented cell adhesion to fibronectin through the regulation of ${\beta}1$ integrin activity. Especially, PILRpep3, a representative 3-mer peptide covering the conserved motifs of the PILR extracellular domain, prevented the clustering and activation of ${\beta}1$ integrin by dephosphorylating FAK and vinculin, which are major components of focal adhesion. In addition, PILRpep3 inhibited transendothelial migration of monocytes as well as endothelial cell tube formation. Furthermore, upon intraperitoneal injection of PILRpep3 into mice with collagen-induced arthritis, the inflammatory response of rheumatoid arthritis was strongly suppressed. Taken together, these results suggest that PILR-derived agonist ligands may prevent the inflammatory reactions of rheumatoid arthritis by activating CD99.
Treatment efficacy of 1064nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in ectopic Mongolian spot

Background: Q-switched neodymium-yttrium aluminium-garnet (Q-switched Nd:YAG) laser has been reported as effective treatment of nevus of Ota and acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules. Data about ectopic Mongolian spot has rarely been reported. Objectives: To investigate treatment efficacy of 1064nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in ectopic Mongolian spot Methods: We included 62 patients with ectopic Mongolian spot and a total of 71 lesions were checked. 33 lesions were treated with 1064nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and 38 lesions were observed without treatment. The result was assessed by Mexameter and quintile grading scale. Results: Mean follow-up duration was 17.8±10.0 months in observation group and 14.1±6.8 months in treatment group. There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.001) in Δ melanin index (initial melanin index - final melanin index) between observation group (7.1±62.7) and treatment group (156.7±78.4). Mean quintile grading scale at final follow-up was also statistically different (p<0.001) between two groups (observation: 0.84±0.95, treatment: 2.82±1.01). Conclusion: Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is also effective in treating ectopic Mongolian spot not only in Ota’s nevus or Hori’s nevus.
A Comparison of Korean Verbs Expressing Bull Markets Based on Report Types

This paper examines similarities and differences in the use of Korean verbs that convey bullish situations in stock markets on the basis of both the written financial articles transmitted through the medium of newspapers and the spoken financial news delivered through the medium of TVs. These two types of financial reports are similar in that the collocate of some verbs is restricted to just one type, the top four verbs in frequency are identical, and diverse verbs co-occur with the expression indicating a rising level. On the other hand, there are also several differences between the two types of reports in that a verb form containing the honorific verbal ending -supnita appears only in the spoken news, a verb that does not occur at all in the written articles occurs many times in the spoken news, and more diverse verbs and verb forms are used in the written articles than the spoken news. The information about these similarities and differences in the use of verbs in each report type is helpful to the appropriate use of them in relation to the kind of an expression with which they can co-occur and the report type in which they can appear.
