Application of Roller Hemming Technology on Manufacturing of Light Vehicle Body Structure

For every 10 percent of weight reduction in vehicles, a 6 to 8 percent of fuel consumption decreases. Therefore, light metals such as aluminum alloys have been used to produce the body structure of light vehicles. However, since the formability of aluminum alloy is not as good as that of steel, it needs a special attention during their manufacturing process. Especially, the conventional hemming process used for hoods, doors, roofs, wheel houses, and trunk lids should be reconsidered when aluminum alloys replace the steel panels on those parts since there are cracks occurring in the hemmed flanges. Therefore, roller hemming recently has been introduced in order to remove those problems. Roller hemming can control the force during the operation and be a flexible system compared to that of conventional hemming.
Preliminary Research on Roller Hemming for Pre-Stretched Aluminum Sheets

Roller hemming is the process which the flange of an outer panel is bent and folded around the edge portion of an inner panel in a continuous process by a robot guided roller. Since hemming is the last forming process in stamping, it determines the external quality of automotive outer parts such as doors, hood and trunk lid. Before the hemming process, many forming procedure is undertaken to make the part right shape, and this forming process can leave unexpected stresses in the panel and affect the final quality of hemming. Therefore, in this study, pre-stretched aluminum sheets were roller hemmed, and their quality was inspected by optical microscope. The result shows that there is no crack occurred on the comer of hemmed flanges of pre-stretched aluminum sheets after hemming process.
