Background: Cultured allogenic keratinocyte (CAK) and epidermal growth factor (EGF) are commonly used biological treatments for partial-thickness burn wounds. A comparative study was conducted on whether the combination therapy of CAK and EGF promotes partial-thickness burn wound healing.Methods: From January 2020 to March 2021, 73 patients who visited the hospital with partial-thickness burns were enrolled in the study. Patients were treated with CAK (Kaloderm) (n=20), EGF (Easyef) (n=17), and CAK+EGF (n=24). Wound healing rate, time to heal, factors affecting wound healing (age, sex, underlying disease, mode of injury, location of injury, initial wound size), and scarring were comparatively analyzed.Results: The wound healing rate for 20 days was 85% (17/20) in the CAK group, 88% (15/17) in the EGF group, and 92% (22/24) in the CAK+EGF group. The average healing time was 11.0±6.0 days, with the CAK group taking 12.6±5.5 days, EGF group taking 11.5±6.0 days, and CAK+EGF group taking 9.0±6.3 days. The patients who received CAK+EGF treatment had higher hazard than the patients without CAK+EGF treatment (hazard ratio, 2.078; 95% confidence interval, 1.021–4.228). Smaller wound size <5 cm2 (hazard ratio, 2.869; 95% confidence interval, 1.426–5.773) was associated with complete wound healing. Though statistically insignificant (P=0.218), less scars occurred in the CAK+EGF group.Conclusion: Combination therapy of CAK and EGF promotes wound healing in partial-thickness burn wounds.

Currently, no vaccine or established therapeutic agents are available for coronavirus disease 2019. The sharp increase in demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) necessitates an improvement in the protective efficacy of PPE. We evaluated the potential antimicrobial and antiviral effects of a surface-coating disinfectant (3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyldimethyl octadecyl ammonium chloride, Si-QAC) when applied onto PPE. Si-QAC-pre-coated PPE was artificially contaminated with either influenza virus or Salmonella. The results showed significantly reduced influenza and Salmonella titers in Si-QAC-coated PPE; these antimicrobial effects lasted 7 days. This suggests that this surface-coating disinfectant effectively reduces pathogen contamination of PPE, enabling their safe and long-term use.

Backgrounds: Fisetin (tetrahydroxyflavone), a natural plant component, is known to have different properties including, direct radical scavenger, anti-inflammation, and cell survival. Methods: We investigated whether fisetin can protect cardiomyocytes against <TEX>$H_2O_2$</TEX>-induced apoptosis that is relevant to cardiovascular disease risks using cell viability test, ROS measurement, and Western blotting. Results: Fisetin decreased apoptotic cell death and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), while enhancing the expression of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) as well as phosphorylation of Akt and extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2. In particular, fisetin significantly decreased apoptosis through inhibition of cleaved caspase-3 and Bax expression and by enhancing the expression of anti-apoptotic enzyme as well as Bcl-2 in <TEX>$H_2O_2$</TEX>-stimulated H9c2 cells. However, the expression of heme oxygenase, catalase, and Mn-SOD was not altered by fisetin in these conditions. Conclusion: Taken together, these data suggest that the potential cardioprotective effect of fisetin may involve Cu/Zn-SOD-mediated activation of Bcl-2 through the Akt and ERK1/2 pathways.
Practical Porous Matrix for Molecular Structure Determination of General Liquid Chemicals

<P>A practical porous crystalline matrix for molecular structure determination of a wide range of liquid chemicals has been set up. We herein report proof-of-concept research on the temperature-dependent single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) guest exchange of the <I>P</I>- and <I>M</I>-helix-enantiomeric multilayered ensemble with flexible open-channels of the shortest diameter, 4.4 × 4.4 Å<SUP>2</SUP>. This landmark ensemble is, to the best of our knowledge, the most efficient, practical, tolerant, and reproducible porous matrix for single crystal structure determination of general liquid compounds via easy SCSC guest exchange without any desolvation process. The innovative channel behaves in a guest-dependent flexible response manner and enables scientists to solve structures of a wide range of liquid chemicals. The Effect of Topical Normobaric Oxygen Therapy on Composite Graft Survival in Fingertip Amputation

Background: Though composite grafting is an easy, simple treatment for fingertip amputation, it is known to have a low survival rate. To increase the likelihood of composite graft survival, various adjuvant therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, ice-cooling, or vasodilator agents have been used. In this study, we attempted to validate the hypothesis that topical normobaric oxygen therapy (tNBO) could improve composite graft survival in fingertip amputation.Methods: Patients who sustained fingertip amputations and who were treated with composite grafting between January 2015 and July 2020 were included. The patients (n=154) were divided into two groups: those who received tNBO (n=102) and those who had not (n=52). The effect of tNBO on graft survival, survival rate by level of amputation, and risk factors of graft survival (age, smoking, time to surgery, diabetes mellitus, and crush-avulsion injury type) were examined.Results: tNBO significantly increased composite graft survival (75.3% vs. 50%, P<0.001) in amputations distal to the nail base area. Among risk factors, time to surgery >5 hours (odds ratio, 48.6; P=0.001) and crush-avulsion injury type (odds ratio, 10.1; P<0.001) significantly decreased graft survival in both groups. Smoking decreased graft survival only in the non-tNBO group (odds ratio, 28; P=0.015), not in the tNBO-treated group.Conclusion: tNBO increased composite graft survival in fingertip amputation distal to the nail base area. It can be helpful for composite graft survival in smokers.

우리나라는 농촌지역의 급격한 경제 규모 축소와 농업 노동력의 고령화 등으로 물관리에 대한 농업인의 참여가 크게 제한되고 있다. 수리시설물에 의한 농업용수의 최종 수혜자는 농업인임에도 불구하고 2000년에 수세가 폐지되면서 시설물 관리 비용에 대한 부담이 특정 단체와 기관으로 정착되었다. 이와 더불어 급속한 농업인의 고령화와 수리시설관리에 대한 관심이 저하되면서 수혜 농업인이 담당해오던 용수로 및 배수로의 관리에 대한 관심이 점점 낮아지고 있다. 현재까지 농업용수 확보를 위해 다양한 수리시설물을 설치하였음에도 불구하고, 논의 경우 10년 빈도 한발년에도 안정적으로 용수를 공급할 수 있는 수리안전답이 전체의 75% 수준에 불과하며, 밭의 경우에는 선진국과 비교하여 아직 지속적인 개발이 국가적으로 필요한 실정이다. 이러한 영농형태 변화에 맞춘 농업용수 공급체계의 선진화된 기술의 도입과 용수이용의 효율성을 제고하기 위한 관개시설 효율화 등과 같은 기술의 개발이 절대적으로 필요한 시점이다. 이에 농업용수 급수 손실을 최소화하고 자동화를 통한 안정적 용수관리를 위해 기존 물꼬에 급수공 별로 적용 가능하고 원격제어가 가능한 스마트 물꼬를 개발하여 충남 태안군 장곡리에 위치한 장곡저수지에 설치하여 운영 중이다. 스마트 물꼬는 전동장치, 개폐센서, 수문, 제어장치, 원격제어 시스템으로 구성되어 있으며, 사용자의 판단에 따라 수동조작 또한 가능하도록 개발하였다. 향후 본 기술의 표준화된 장치 개발과 내구성 검증을 통해 농업인 고령화로 인한 노동력 감소에 대응할 수 있는 농업용수 관리체계 구축에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Probiotics, specifically Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, have garnered attention for their potential health benefits. This study focuses on evaluating the probiotic properties of candidate probiotics L. rhamnosus IDCC 3201 (3201) using the Caenorhabditis elegans surrogate animal model, a well-established in vivo system for studying host-bacteria interactions. The adhesive ability to the host's gastrointestinal tract is a crucial criterion for selecting potential probiotic bacteria. Our findings demonstrated that 3201 exhibits significantly higher adhesive capabilities compared with Escherichia coli OP50 (OP50), a standard laboratory food source for C. elegans and is comparable with the widely recognized probiotic L. rhamnosus GG (LGG). In lifespan assay, 3201 significantly increased the longevity of C. elegans compared with OP50. In addition, preconditioning with 3201 enhanced C. elegans immune response against four different foodborne pathogenic bacteria. To uncover the molecular basis of these effects, transcriptome analysis elucidated that 3201 modulates specific gene expression related to the innate immune response in C. elegans. C-type lectin-related genes and lysozyme-related genes, crucial components of the immune system, showed significant upregulation after feeding 3201 compared with OP50. These results suggested that preconditioning with 3201 may enhance the immune response against pathogens. Metabolome analysis revealed increased levels of fumaric acid and succinic acid, metabolites of the citric acid cycle, in C. elegans fed with 3201 compared with OP50. Furthermore, there was an increase in the levels of lactic acid, a well-known antimicrobial compound. This rise in lactic acid levels may have contributed to the robust defense mechanisms against pathogens. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the probiotic properties of the candidate probiotic L. rhamnosus IDCC 3201 by using multi-omics analysis.
