<P>In this study, we evaluated the probiotic properties of Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus pentosus, and Lactobacillus fermentum strains isolated from fermented radish. All the strains survived the simulated oro-gastrointestinal transit condition and showed significantly higher adherence to Caco-2 cells compared with the probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. The strains showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, autoaggregation, and coaggregation capacity with pathogens. Furthermore, the Lactobacillus strains inhibited the adherence of Yersinia enterocolitica subsp. enterocolitica, Shigella boydii, and Salmonella choleraesuis to the Caco-2 cell line. The strains possessed bile salt hydrolase activity and their cholesterol-lowering activity in vitro was above 50% in the presence of bile. Strains of L. plantarum and L. pentosus possessed the plantaricin-encoding plnEF gene. In addition, the Lactobacillus strains maintained about 80% cell viability after freeze-drying in the presence of a combination of 5% skim milk and 5% maltodextrin as cryoprotectant, and 70% recovery of cell viability was observed in the absence of any cryoprotectant.</P>

With the advancement of information technology, criminals employ multiple cyberspaces to promote cybercrime. To combat cybercrime and cyber dangers, banks and financial institutions use artificial intelligence (AI). AI technologies assist the banking sector to develop and grow in many ways. Transparency and explanation of AI's ability are required to preserve trust. Deep learning protects client behavior and interest data. Deep learning techniques may anticipate cyber-attack behavior, allowing for secure banking transactions. This proposed approach is based on a user-centric design that safeguards people's private data over banking. Here, initially, the attack data can be generated over banking transactions. Routing is done for the configuration of the nodes. Then, the obtained data can be preprocessed for removing the errors. Followed by hierarchical network feature extraction can be used to identify the abnormal features related to the attack. Finally, the user data can be protected and the malicious attack in the transmission route can be identified by using the Wrapper stepwise ResNet classifier. The proposed work outperforms other techniques in terms of attack detection and accuracy, and the findings are depicted in the graphical format by employing the Python tool.

We characterized the probiotic properties of Lactobacillus helveticus strains KII13 and KHI1 isolated from fermented cow milk by in vitro and in vivo studies. The strains exhibited tolerance to simulated orogastrointestinal condition, adherence to Caco-2 cells, and antimicrobial activity. Both L. helveticus strains produced bioactive tripeptides, isoleucylprolyl- proline and valyl-prolyl-proline, during fermentation of milk. KII13 showed higher in vitro cholesterol-lowering activity (47%) compared with KHI1 (28%) and L. helveticus ATCC 15009 (22%), and hence, it was selected for in vivo study of cholesterol-lowering activity in atherogenic diet-fed hypercholesterolemic mice. For the study, mice were divided into four groups (viz., normal diet control group, atherogenic diet control group (HCD), KII13- atherogenic diet group (HCD-KII13), and Lactobacillus acidophilus ATCC 43121-atherogenic diet group (HCD-L.ac) as positive control). The serum total cholesterol level was significantly decreased by 8.6% and 7.78% in the HCD-KII13 and HCD-L.ac groups (p < 0.05), respectively, compared with the HCD group. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in both HCD-KII13 and HCD-L.ac groups were decreased by 13% and 11%, respectively, compared with the HCD group (both, p < 0.05). Analysis of cholesterol metabolism-related gene expression in mice liver showed increased expression of LDLR and SREBF2 genes in mice fed with KII13. By comparing all the results, we conclude that L. helveticus KII13 could be used as a potential probiotic strain to produce antihypertensive peptides and reduce serum cholesterol.

Background and Objectives This study investigates the role of manuka honey in the healingof postoperative mastoid cavity. Subjects and Method This was a single centre prospective study on 40 consecutive patientsof chronic otitis media undergoing canal wall down mastoidectomy. Manuka honey soaked ingel foam was kept in the mastoid cavity for the study group and antibiotic soaked gel foam waskept for the control group. Culture swabs from mastoid granulations were sent at various timesfrom both groups. The healing of the mastoid cavity was assessed in the follow up period. Results Preoperatively 15 out of 20 patients (75%) had a positive aural swab culture in thestudy group while 11 out of 20 (55%) in the control group had a positive aural swab culture. Themost common organism isolated was Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis. Onemonth after mastoidectomy only 4 patients (20%) had sterile culture and 16 patients (80%) hadgrown organisms; in the control group, 7 patients (35%) had sterile culture and 13 patients (65%)had growth on culture. The mean merchant scores for the study group and the control were 2.61(2-5) and 2.05 (1-4), respectively. At 3 months 13 patients (65%) with sterile culture and 7 patients(35%) had growth on culture; in the control group, 16 patients (80%) had sterile cultureand 4 had shown persistent growth on culture (p=0.28). All positive cultures were aerobic inboth groups. The mean merchant scores for the study group and the control were 1.03 (0-4)and 0.7 (0-3), respectively (p=0.09). Conclusion Healing of mastoid cavity was almost similar in both groups (p>0.05). Manukahoney exhibited antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas, Proteus, Klebsiella, Escherichiacoli, Staphylococcus

A novel actinobacterium, strain SK68, was isolated from the rhizosphere of peanut plant and its salinity stress alleviation ability was studied using tomato (Solanum lycopersicum cv. Micro-Tom) plants. Based on 16S rDNA based phylogenetic analysis, strain SK68 has been identified as a Streptomyces sp. Strain SK68 had branched substrate mycelium bearing smooth surfaced spores and the spore colour is brownish grey on ISP4 medium. It exhibited enzyme activities such as xylanase, cellulase, amylase, and pectinase and degraded hypoxanthine, casein, and L-tyrosine. The strain SK68 differed in its banding pattern in BOX-PCR and RAPD fingerprinting compared to the closely matching type strains Streptomyces erythrochromogenes NBRC 3304T (AB184746), S. flavotricini NBRC 12770T (AB184132), S. racemochromogenes NBRC 12906T (AB184235), and S. polychromogenes NBRC 13072T (NR041109). Strain SK68 was evaluated for its salinity stress-alleviating activity in tomato plants with 180 mmol/L NaCl under gnotobiotic condition. A significant increase in plant biomass was observed in strain SK68-inoculated tomato plants under salt stress compared to control and salt-stressed non-inoculated plants.

The aim of this study was to enhance the viability of probiotic strains Pediococcus pentosaceus KID7, Lactobacillus plantarum KII2, Lactobacillus fermentum KLAB6 and Lactobacillus helveticus KII13 in gastrointestinal transit, freeze-drying condition and during storage time by microencapsulation using a combination of alginate, fenugreek gum and locust bean gum. The microcapsules were prepared using various ratio of alginate to fenugreek gum to locust bean gum and tested for its dissolution in colonic fluid. The combination that efficiently dissolved in colonic fluid was selected for co-encapsulation of the probiotic strains and prebiotics to produce synbiotic microcapsules. Further, we observed that the bacteria encapsulated with alginate-fenugreek gum-locust bean gum (AFL) matrix tolerated gastrointestinal condition efficiently compared to non-encapsulated bacteria. The encapsulated bacterial cells retained higher viability than non-encapsulated cells during freeze-drying condition and subsequent storage for 3 months at 4°C. These results show the utility of AFL matrix in microencapsulation of probiotics for use in food industry.

<P>A series of cationic iridium complexes (<B>1</B>–<B>6</B>) were synthesized using alkylated imidazole-based ancillary ligands, and the photophysical and electrochemical properties of these complexes were subsequently evaluated. Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) were fabricated from these complexes, and the effects of the alkyl chain length on the electroluminescent properties of the devices were investigated. The LECs based on these complexes resulted in yellow emission (complexes <B>1</B>, <B>3</B>, and <B>5</B>) and green emission (complexes <B>2</B>, <B>4</B>, and <B>6</B>) with Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.49, 0.50) and (0.33, 0.59), respectively. Our results indicate that the luminance and efficiency of the LECs can consistently be enhanced by increasing the alkyl chain length of the iridium complexes as a result of suppressed intermolecular interaction and self-quenching. Subsequently, a high luminance of 7309 cd m<SUP>–2</SUP> and current efficiency of 3.85 cd A<SUP>–1</SUP> were achieved for the LECs based on complex <B>5</B>.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2014/aamick.2014.6.issue-20/am5058426/production/images/medium/am-2014-058426_0009.gif'></P>

The crystal structure of the title compounds with both coumarin and sulfonamide moieties were examined. These two groups have very special for their pharmaceutical and medicinal properties have been determined from single crystal Xray diffraction data. In the title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with unit cell dimension a=8.5775(4)Å, b= 24.9943(13)Å and c=13.7319(7)Å [alpha & gamma=90o beta= 103.558(2)o]. In the structure The S1 atom shows a distorted tetrahedral geometry, with O1—S1—O2 [121.08 (1)o] and N1-S1-C5 [105.85 (1)o] angles deviating from ideal tetrahedral values are attributed to the Thrope-Ingold effect. The sum of bond angles around N1 (354.9o) indicates that N1 is in sp2 hybridization. The Pyridine ring adopts boat conformation and pyran rings adopt a sofa conformation. Crystal structure is stabilized by C-H…O intra molecular hydrogen bond interactions.
