While various foodborne pathogenic bacteria can be detected more rapidly via polymerase chain reaction than via conventional plating methods, it is impossible to distinguish between viable and dead cells in DNA-based assays. Hence, propidium monoazide (PMA) treatment has been introduced to detect living cells. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the applicability of the PMA treatment and real-time qPCR method for the detection of Cronobacter sakazakii and to compare it to that of plate counting. Based on our positive results, we suggest the use of PMA treatment and real-time qPCR for the detection of viable Cronobacter sakazakii in various food sources and an update of the Korean Food Code.

Hydrops fetalis is diagnosed when abnormal fluid collections are manifest in two or more fetal compartmnets including abdominal ascite, pleural effusion, percardial effusion, skin edema, polyhydroamniosis and placental edema. Although fetal hydrops was historically most commonly associated with Rh blood group isoimmunization, the availability of Rh immunoglobulin has increased the proportion of fetuses affected due to nonimmune etiologies. Neuroblastoma is a malignant tumor which originates in the autonomous nervous system. Congenital neuroblastoma is the most common solid malignant tumor of the neonatal period, incidence ranges 1:10,000 of all live births, retroperitoneal space being the most frequent localization. We have experienced a case of nonimmune hydrops fetalis with neuroblastoma at 32 weeks of gestation in 39 year old woman and reported that with brief review of related literatures.
Deep-Seated Giant Lipoma on the Hand Inducing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Lipoma is a very frequent benign soft tissue tumor, but its occurrence in the hands is rare. Lipoma in the hands is generally asymp- tomatic; however, symptoms may develop if local neurovascular structures are compressed due to size or location of the lipoma. Carpal tunnel syndrome, which is a compressive neuropathy of the median nerve, is the most common neuropathy in the hands and presents pain, numbness, hypoesthesia, and atrophy of the thenar muscle. We present a case of carpal tunnel syndrome by deep-seated giant lipoma with a literature review.

<P>Many high-resolution patterning techniques have been developed to realize nano- and microscale applications of electric devices, sensors, and transistors. However, conventional patterning methods based on photo or e-beam lithography are not employed to fabricate optical elements of high aspect ratio and a sub-100 nm scale due to the limit of resolution, high costs and low throughput. In this study, covalent bonding-assisted nanotransfer lithography (CBNL) was proposed to fabricate various structures of high resolution and high aspect ratio at low cost by a robust and fast chemical reaction. The proposed process is based on the formation of covalent bonds between silicon of adhesive layers on a substrate and oxygen of the deposited material on the polymer stamp. The covalent bond is strong enough to detach multiple layers from the stamp for a large area without defects. The obtained nanostructures can be used for direct application or as a hard mask for etching. Two nano-optical applications were demonstrated in this study,<I>i.e.</I>, a meta-surface and a wire-grid polarizer. A perfect absorption meta-surface was generated by transferring subwavelength hole arrays onto a substrate without any post-processing procedures. In addition, a wire-grid polarizer with high aspect ratio (1 : 3) and 50 nm line width was prepared by the nano-transfer of materials, which were used as a hard mask for etching. Therefore, CBNL provides a means of achieving large-area nano-optical elements with a simple roll-to-plate process at low cost.</P>
Fabrication and characteristics of plastic optical fiber directional couplers

Directional couplers of gradient-index plastic optical fibers were fabricated and characterized. In particular, we have employed a core-facet technique to make the directional couplers, which require mechanical side polishing and linkage. We have measured insertion loss, excess loss, and coupling ratio of the fabricated couplers as a function of polishing depth and coupling length. We found that polishing depth of ~300 μm and coupling length of ~35 mm are optimum conditions for minimizing the insertion and excess losses and for achieving 1:1 coupling ratio.

<P>The adsorption mechanism for the N719 dye on a TiO2 electrode was examined by the kinetic and diffusion models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, and intra-particle diffusion models). Among these methods, the observed adsorption kinetics are well-described using the pseudo-second order model. Moreover, the film diffusion process was the main controlling step of adsorption, which was analysed using a diffusion-based model. The photodynamic properties in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were investigated using time-resolved transient absorption techniques. The photodynamics of the oxidized N719 species were shown to be dependent on the adsorption time, and also the adsorbed concentration of N719. The photovoltaic parameters (Jsc, Voc, FF and 관) of this DSSC were determined in terms of the dye adsorption amounts. The solar cell performance correlates significantly with charge recombination and dye regeneration dynamics, which are also affected by the dye adsorption amounts. Therefore, the photovoltaic performance of this DSSC can be interpreted in terms of the adsorption kinetics and the photodynamics of oxidized N719.</P>
Plant Regeneration from Cotyledon Explants in Leaf Chicory

Plantlets of leaf chicory ‘Radicchio’ and ‘Italiana’ (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum) were produced through organogenesis from cotyledon explants cultured on MS basal medium supplemented with various concentrations of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) combinations. Most vigorous callus and shoot formation of ‘Radicchio’ were observed in the combination of 1.0 ㎎ㆍℓ<SUP>-1</SUP> IAA and 1.0 mgㆍℓ<SUP>-1</SUP> BAP and those of ‘Italiana’ in 0.1 ㎎ㆍℓ<SUP>-1</SUP> IAA and 1.0 ㎎ㆍℓ<SUP>-1</SUP> BAP. Silver nitrate (AgNO₃) which was applied to reduce vitrification was also effective on theformation of single shoots; also, 10 and 5 ㎎ㆍℓ<SUP>-1</SUP> AgNO₃ were selected as the most effective levels in ‘Radicchio’ and ‘Italiana’, respectively. Root formation was promoted when regenerated shoots were cultured in 1/2 MS medium with 0.5 ㎎ㆍℓ<SUP>-1</SUP> naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) for both ‘Radicchio’ and ‘Italiana’ although adventitious roots were formed without NAA. Rooted plants were transferred into pots and thereafter, acclimatized and maintained in proper greenhouse conditions.
Effects of exercise training on the biochemical pathways associated with sarcopenia

[Purpose] Sarcopenia is considered one of the major causes of disability in the elderly population and is highly associated with aging. Exercise is an essential strategy for improving muscle health while aging and involves multiple metabolic and transcriptional adaptations. Although the beneficial effects of exercise modalities on skeletal muscle structure and function in aging are well recognized, the exact cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the influence of exercise have not been fully elucidated. [Methods] We summarize the biochemical pathways involved in the progression and pathogenesis of sarcopenia and describe the beneficial effects of exercise training on the relevant signaling pathways associated with sarcopenia. [Results] This study briefly introduces current knowledge on the signaling pathways involved in the development of sarcopenia, effects of aerobic exercise on mitochondria-related parameters and mitochondrial function, and role of resistance exercise in the regulation of muscle protein synthesis against sarcopenia. [Conclusion] This review suggested that the beneficial effects of exercise are still under-explored, and accelerated research will help develop better modalities for the prevention, management, and treatment of sarcopenia.
