Tilted beta regression and beta-binomial regression models: Mean and variance modeling

This paper proposes new parameterizations of the tilted beta binomial distribution, obtained from the combination of the binomial distribution and the tilted beta distribution, where the beta component of the mixture is parameterized as a function of their mean and variance. These new parameterized distributions include as particular cases the beta rectangular binomial and the beta binomial distributions. After that, we propose new linear regression models to deal with overdispersed binomial datasets. These new models are defined from the proposed new parameterization of the tilted beta binomial distribution, and assume regression structures for the mean and variance parameters. These new linear regression models are fitted by applying Bayesian methods and using the OpenBUGS software. The proposed regression models are fitted to a school absenteeism dataset and to the seeds germination rate according to the type seed and root.
Uncertainty quantification and propagation with probability boxes

In the last decade, the best estimate plus uncertainty methodologies in nuclear technology and nuclear power plant design have become a trending topic in the nuclear field. Since BEPU was allowed for licensing purposes by the most important regulator bodies, different uncertainty assessment methods have become popular, overall non-parametric methods. While non-parametric tolerance regions can be well stated and used in uncertainty quantification for licensing purposes, the propagation of the uncertainty through different codes (multi-scale, multiphysics) in cascade needs a better depiction of uncertainty than the one provided by the tolerance regions or a probability distribution. An alternative method based on the parametric or distributional probability boxes is used to perform uncertainty quantification and propagation regarding statistic uncertainty from one code to another. This method is sample-size independent and allows well-defined tolerance intervals for uncertainty quantification, manageable for uncertainty propagation. This work characterizes the distributional p-boxes behavior on uncertainty quantification and uncertainty propagation through nested random sampling.
GaN-based light-emitting diodes on graphene-coated flexible substrates.

<P>We demonstrate GaN-based thin light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on flexible polymer and paper substrates covered with chemical vapor deposited graphene as a transparent-conductive layer. Thin LEDs were fabricated by lifting the sapphire substrate off by Excimer laser heating, followed by transfer of the LEDs to the flexible substrates. These substrates were coated with tri-layer graphene by a wet transfer method. Optical and electrical properties of thin laser lift-offed LEDs on the flexible substrates were characterized under both relaxed and strained conditions. The graphene on paper substrates remained conducting when the graphene/paper structure was folded. The high transmittance, low sheet resistance and high failure strain of the graphene make it an ideal candidate as the transparent and conductive layer in flexible optoelectronics.</P>
Insights on co-creation in Mexico: challenges to its application of public-private partnerships

Co-creation has captured the attention of policy makers and public administrators, not only in developed countries, but also in emer-ging countries. Its objective is to grant a more central role to citizens/users in the policy process to create public value. While the theory continues to be relatively dispersed in the academic literature, there have been few empirical studies evaluating its applicability in improving public management processes. This arti-cle challenges the concept of co-creation by providing an analysis of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in Mexico. Theoretical reflec-tions indicate that co-creation can improve social profitability of projects by proving a participative solution to inefficiencies that are characterized by PPPs. However, the institutional and organiza-tional barriers that hinder a state’s development and progress to develop an effective bureaucracy are still prominent lacking, espe-cially in the developing country context, where corruption is pro-duce and not co-creation.

Background: To analyze prognostic factors and standardized mortality ratio (SMR) with respect to the general population in a cohort of Spanish patients with primary Sjogren`s syndrome (SS). Methods: In October 2013, the RESSP-GEAS-SEMI database included 1045 consecutive patients who met the 2002 SS-criteria. Hazard ratios (HR) and confi dence intervals (95% CI) obtained in the adjusted regression model were calculated. The SMR was estimated using the life tables of the general population of Spain in 2012. Results: The cohort included 982 (94%) women with a mean age at diagnosis of 54 years and a mean disease evolution of 118 months; 115 (11%) patients died due to systemic disease (n=18), infection (n=21), cardiovascular disease (n=35), hematologic malignancy (n=10) and other causes (n=31). The SMR for the total cohort of patients (adjusted for age and sex with the general Spanish population) was 4.66. Survival rates at 5, 10, 20 and 30 years were 96.0%, 90.5%, 80.9% and 60.4%, respectively. The Cox-regression analysis identifi ed the following baseline variables at diagnosis associated with death: male gender (HR 2.98, p<0.001), altered parotid scintigraphy (HR 2.81, p=0.043), lymphopenia (HR 1.63, p=0.034), anti-La antibodies (HR 1.51, p=0.034), low C3 (HR 1.93, p=0.034), low C4 (HR 2.06, p=0.016), monoclonal gammopathy (HR 1.81, p=0.047) and cryoglobulins (HR 2.58, p<0.001). The main baseline factors associated with mortality caused by systemic disease were systemic-activity at diagnosis, cytopenias, monoclonal gammopathy, cryoglobulins, and hypocomplementemia. Conclusions: Primary SS should not be considered a mild disease, since mortality is almost 5 times greater with respect to general population, with an overall survival at 20 years of 81%. Patients with a lower survival are those who present with active disease at diagnosis and associated immunological markers of B-cell hyperactivity.
