An ‘Expressive’ Analysis of -Yo in Korean

Jaehoon Choi 언어과학회 2021 언어과학연구 Vol.- No.98

This paper provides a semantic analysis of the discourse particle -yo in Korean. I show that despite the apparent similarities between -yo and the so-called speech level particles, the two do not form a natural class. I argue instead that -yo is an honorific item used in a variety of syntactic and semantic contexts with the purpose of expressing the speaker’s politeness towards the addressee. I further show that -yo qualifies as an expressive and propose an analysis in terms of ‘expressive’. The analysis is developed based on the interaction between -yo and other honorific expressions.

Two Types of -yo : Agreemental and Concordial

        Jaehoon Choi 한국언어학회 2023 언어 Vol.48 No.2

This paper redefines the nature of the addressee honorific morpheme –yo in Korean by examining its distinct properties. Traditionally classified as sentence-final and sentence-medial types, the current study reveals that the conventional position-based categorization falls short in explaining the evident differences between the two types of -yo. Instead, I propose a broader perspective, linking –yo to the linguistic phenomena of agreement and concord. Under the proposed approach, sentence-final –yo and sentence-medial –yo are respectively identified as an agreement marker and a concord marker.

        Jussive Subjects as Imposters

        Jaehoon Choi(최재훈) 사단법인 한국언어학회 2016 언어학 Vol.0 No.74

This paper demonstrates the parallels between jussive subjects and imposters by probing the cooccurrence with a notional pronoun, binding effects and word order constraint, and subject honorification pattern. Based on these shared properties, we argue for a simpler classification of nominal expressions by subsuming jussive subjects under the heading of ‘imposter". We then proceed to propose an internal syntactic structure of imposters. This analysis is shown to be able to properly capture the properties of imposters and to be compatible with the general practice of syntax.

Headedness in Exocentric Compounds and Morphological Productivity

Jaehoon Choi 현대문법학회 2021 현대문법연구 Vol.111 No.-

This paper aims to find a connection between morphological productivity of a particular morpheme and its potential to serve as the head of exocentric compounds. This goal is achieved by investigating how a group of Sino-Korean compounds, called ca- compounds, is derived. Ca-compounds can be derived by combining ca ‘self’ and a head morpheme of a source compound. Though what is to be combined with ca ‘self’ undergoes competition with other candidate morphemes, no clear cue for the headedness such as semantic headedness is available due to the semantic identity between competing morphemes. It thus remains mysterious why a certain morpheme is to be chosen over the other(s). I hypothesize that in such cases, the past productivity of a particular morpheme, which can be calculated by its type frequency, offers a guidance for the choice of a particular morpheme for morphological processes. This hypothesis is tested by the way ca-compounds are formed out of an exocentric source compound.

A Low-Profile Broadband Array Antenna for Home Repeater Applications

Jaehoon Choi,Sung Joon Yoon 한국전자파학회JEES 2018 Journal of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science Vol.18 No.4

This paper reports on the proposed design of a low profile broadband array antenna for home repeater applications. The proposed antenna consists of 1 × 4 patch elements and two ground planes, one of which is slitted. By using the gap feeding method, the impedance matching of the antenna is improved by a multi-resonance phenomenon. The proposed antenna provides a wide –10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth simultaneously covering the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM-1800), Personal Communications Service (PCS), and the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) bands (1.67-2.32 GHz). In order to reduce the mutual coupling between adjacent patch elements, slits are embedded in the ground plane. An isolation level of –20 dB is realized over the entire operating frequency band.

      • Management of Lymphedema

Choi, Jaehoon,Lee, Seongwon,Son, Daegu The Korean Society for Microsurgery 2017 Archives of reconstructive microsurgery Vol.26 No.1

Lymphedema is a frequent complication after the treatment of various cancers, particularly breast cancer, gynecological cancers, melanomas, and other skin and urological cancers. Lymphedema patients have chronic swelling of the affected extremity, recurrent infections, limited mobility and decreased quality of life. Once lymphedema develops, it is usually progressive. Over time, lymphedema leads to fat deposition and subsequent fibrosis of the surrounding tissues. However, there is no cure for lymphedema. Recently, the development of microsurgery has led to introduction of new surgical techniques for lymphedema, such as vascularized lymph node transfer. We report here the latest trends in the surgical treatment of lymphedema, as well as diagnosis and conventional treatments of lymphedema.

      • A brief review of sound energy harvesting

        Choi, Jaehoon,Jung, Inki,Kang, Chong-Yun Elsevier 2019 Nano energy Vol.56 No.-

Abstract

Sound energy harvesting is one of the promising technologies due to the abundant and clean sound sources. It can be the semi-permanent alternative power supplies for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), which is significant in the Internet of Things (IoT). However, sound waves have the low energy density, so there are many kinds of research in recent years to overcome this problem. This paper provides a comprehensive review of sound energy harvesting, focusing on presenting principles, examples and enhancement methods of sound energy harvesters. In this paper, various approaches are introduced which are classified as sound pressure amplification and transduction mechanism. For sound pressure amplification, two typical types of energy harvesters are presented that one is using a resonator, another one is using an acoustic metamaterial, and these are based on piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and triboelectric mechanisms to convert sound energy to electrical energy.

Highlights

This paper summarizes the basic principles of sound energy harvesters and its state-of-the-art researches.

It mainly classifed sound energy harvesters as pressure amplification method and transduction mechanism.

Comparison of the reported sound energy harvesters are provided according to device size, and generated power etc.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Quadruple Band-Notched Trapezoid UWB Antenna with Reduced Gains in Notch Bands

Jaehoon Choi,Jinpil Tak,Yunnan Jin 한국전자파학회JEES 2016 Journal of Electromagnetic Engineering and Science Vol.16 No.1

A compact ultra-wide band antenna with a quadruple band-notched characteristic is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a slotted trapezoid patch radiator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, a pair of C-shaped band stop filters, and a rectangular ground plane. To realize the quadruple notch-band characteristic, a U-shaped slot, a complementary split ring resonator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, and two C-shaped band stop filters are utilized in this antenna. The antenna satisfies the –10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth requirement in the frequency band of 2.88–12.67 GHz, with a band-rejection characteristic in the WiMAX (3.43–3.85 GHz), WLAN (5.26–6.01 GHz), X-band satellite communication (7.05–7.68 GHz), and ITU 8 GHz (8.08–8.87 GHz) signal bands. In addition, the proposed antenna has a compact volume of 30 mm× 33.5 mm× 0.8 mm while maintaining omnidirectional patterns in the H-plane. The experimental and simulated results of the proposed antenna are shown to be in good agreement.
