        온라인 초등영어 수업의 방향: 온라인 영어 수업에 관한 초등학습자들의 인식도 조사

        코로나로 인하여 학교에서는 본격적인 온라인 수업에 돌입하게 되었고, 이에 교육계에서는 많은 혼란을 겪게 되었다. 특히 상호작용 활동이 배제된 상황에서 영어 교과의 경우 그 특성상 교사와 학생들은 많은 어려움에 직면하게 되었다. 이에 본 연구에서는 온라인 영어 수업에 대한 초등학습자들의 인식을 파악함으로써 온라인 영어 수업의 실태와 개선점을 알아보고, 바람직한 온라인 영어 수업의 방안을 고찰해보고자 하였다. 이 연구에서는 강원도의 N초등학교에 재학 중인 초등학생 4~6학년 268명이 참여하였으며, 연구 도구로는 온라인 설문지가 사용되었다. 설문지는 온라인 수업 및 수업구성과 활동의 선호도, 온라인 영어 수업에 대한 만족도 및 난이도로 구성되었다. 결과는 자모비 통계 프로그램을 활용하여 양적으로 분석되었으며 연구 결과를 바탕으로 초등학습자들의 온라인 영어 수업에 대한 인식은 다음과 같이 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 초등학습자들은 온라인 영어수업보다 대면 영어 수업을 훨씬 더 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 초등학습자들이 온라인 영어 수업에서 선호하는 수업 구성은 영어 교사가 자체 제작한 수업 영상이었으며, 활동은 게임 활동으로 수업이 진행되는 것이었다. 셋째, 온라인 영어 수업 자체에서는 수업 구성 측면에서 대체로 만족하였으나, 난이도 측면에서는 ‘대체로 쉬웠다.’고 답하면서 적절하지 않다고 답하였다. 넷째. 성별 및 학년에 따른 온라인 영어 수업 만족도 및 난이도 차이에서는 유의미한 차이가 보이지 않았던 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 온라인 영어 수업을 직접 수강하는 학습자의 관점을 반영하므로 미래의 감염병 상황에 대비하여 온라인 수업을 설계하는 데에 중요한 자료가 될 것으로 기대된다. 아울러 영어 교과에서는 비대면이라는 한계를 극복하여 수업 효과를 극대화하며 양질의 온라인 수업을 확보하기 위한 교육 당국 및 관계자들의 많은 노력이 뒷받침되어야 할 것이다. As COVID-19 made remote learning a new norm, every party involved has been going through trial and error in its implementation. To improve the situation calls for more scholarly research. The purpose of this study is to investigate primary students’ perceptions on online English education and thereby to identify better approaches to this new mode of English learning. As for the methodology, researchers surveyed 266 students between grades four and six in N elementary school located in Gangwon Province. The survey was conducted online and consisted of questions concerning satisfaction levels and difficulty levels in online English education, and preference between online and face-to-face learning. For the data analysis, the Jamovi statistical program was used to administer the frequency and descriptive analysis, Independent Samples t-test as well as One-Way ANOVA. The finding are as follows: First, the survey takers far preferred face-to-face English learning to the online counterpart. Second, between the video instructions given by their own English teachers and those from outside sources, primary students preferred the former; and their favorite class activity was playing games. Third, they were generally satisfied with online English learning as such but found it not difficult enough, not with difficulty levels. Forth, the personal variables of gender and grade did not make a significant difference in satisfaction and difficulty levels in online English education. It is expected that these findings, as representing the views of learners themselves, will serve as an important resource for coping with the infectious disease-caused challenges of the present and the future. The study could also clearly remind English teachers that they need to make every effort to give high-quality instructions even in the difficult reality of remote learning.

        Gastrointestinal Emergency in Neonates and Infants: A Pictorial Essay

        Gastrointestinal (GI) emergencies in neonates and infants encompass from the beginning to the end of the GI tract. Both congenital and acquired conditions can cause various GI emergencies in neonates and infants. Given the overlapping or nonspecific clinical findings of many different neonatal and infantile GI emergencies and the unique characteristics of this age group, appropriate imaging is key to accurate and timely diagnosis while avoiding unnecessary radiation hazard and medical costs. In this paper, we discuss the radiological findings of essential neonatal and infantile GI emergencies, including esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, duodenal atresia, malrotation, midgut volvulus for upper GI emergencies, and jejunoileal atresia, meconium ileus, meconium plug syndrome, meconium peritonitis, Hirschsprung disease, anorectal malformation, necrotizing enterocolitis, and intussusception for lower GI emergencies.

        ‘다문화학생’ 대상 대학입학 특별전형에서 나타나는 선별적 통합

        본 연구는 교육을 통한 사회이동 시스템에서의 통합과 배제의 실태를 검토하고자 고등교육 선발제도에서 다문화학생은 각각의 이주 배경에 따라 어떠한 제도적 상황에 놓여있는가, 어떠한 배경을 지닌 다문화학생이 통합의 대상이 되고 있는가에 대하여 분석하였다. 이를 위해 다문화학생을 대상으로 실시되고 있는 대입전형인 ‘외국인 학생 전형’과 다문화가정 자녀를 대상으로 한 기회균등전형의 지원자격 요건을 국내 주요 29개 대학의 입학전형 모집요강을 토대로 분석하였다. 초・중등교육과정의 단계에서는 학생의 이민 배경에 의한 뚜렷한 구별없이 ‘다문화가정 자녀’에 대하여 ‘다문화 교육’정책을 통한 학교교육으로의 통합이 적극적으로 진행되었던 것에 반하여, 대학 진학 단계의 입시 기회와 특별전형은 이민 배경, 국적, 이민 정책(입국관리제도)상의 법적 지위에 따라서 통합의 대상이 구분된다. 이와 같이 다문화 교육의 대상이 일관적이지 않고 교육단계별로 분절적인 통합제도의 실상은 이주노동자 자녀와 중도입국 국제결혼가정 자녀의 고등교육기회의 보장으로 이어지지 못하는 현상을 낳고 있다. This paper focuses on examining the realities of integration and exclusion within the university education system, with a particular emphasis on the opportunity equalization measures targeting multicultural students. By reviewing the eligibility criteria for special admissions targeting multicultural students for the university entrance, the analysis explores the institutional situations in the higher education selection system for multicultural students based on their respective immigration backgrounds and identifies which multicultural students are included in the integration process. To accomplish this, the paper analyzes the admission guidelines of 29 major domestic universities, focusing on the special admissions for foreign students and admissions targeting multicultural students from multicultural households within the opportunity equalization measures. In the primary and secondary education stages, there has been active integration of “multicultural children” into school education through “multicultural education” policies, regardless of distinct differentiation based on students' immigration backgrounds. However, in the university entrance stage, the opportunities for admission and special admissions are differentiated based on immigration backgrounds, nationalities, and legal statuses related to immigration policies (immigration control system). Consequently, the target of inclusion in the multicultural education is not consistent, and the fragmented nature of integration measures at different education stages leads to a phenomenon where the guarantee of higher education opportunities for children from foreign households and adolescents with mid-term immigration is not realized.

        UniPy: A Unified Programming Language for MGC-based IoT Systems

        The advent of Internet of Things (IoT) makes common nowadays computing environments involving programming not a single computer but several heterogeneous distributed computers together. Developing programs separately, one for each computer, increases programmer burden and testing all the programs become more complex. To address the challenge, this paper proposes an RPC-based unified programming language, UniPy, for development of MGC (eMbedded, Gateway, and Cloud) applications in IoT systems configured with popular computers such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and Web-based DB server. UniPy offers programmers a view of classes as locations and a very simple form of remote procedure call mechanism. Our UniPy compiler automatically splits a UniPy program into small pieces of the program at different locations supporting the necessary RPC mechanism. An advantage of UniPy programs is to permit programmers to write local codes the same as for a single computer requiring no extra knowledge due to having unified programming models, which is very different from the existing research works such as Fabryq and Ravel. Also, the structure of UniPy programs allows programmers to test them by directly executing them before splitting, which is a feature that has never been emphasized yet.

      • Real time monitoring of temperature/impedance variations for cell-drug reaction monitoring using semiconductor processed biosensor

        Electrical Cell-substrate Impedance System and Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy are the widely used methods in the field of biosensors for the monitoring of the status of cell. On the contrary, the usually used biosensors are bulky and hard to monitor in real time. In this work, temperature/impedance integrated sensors are manufactured using semiconductor process for the simultaneous monitoring of the temperature and impedance variations during the cell-drug reactions. The developed platinum thin film temperature sensor showed the inaccuracy less than ±0.05 ℃ and the MEMS process is adopted to enhance the temperature sensitivity. HeLa cancer cells and NIH 3T3 cells are grown on the biosensors and the drug reactions are monitored as a function of time and frequency. The impedance rapidly increase at the early stage and gradually decreased with time as a results of cell-drug reactions. Also, the temperature variations are monitored during the cell-drug reactions. The results are compared with the results by biological cell viability test on the conventional culture plates. The time and frequency dependent impedance signals are analysed in detail with the comparison between biological results.

        A Study on the Development of a MOOC Design Model

        The purpose of this study was to develop a MOOC design model that would improve the current practice of MOOC development in Korea by specifying easy-to-use course development procedures and guiding strategies. Following Richey and Klein (2007)’s conceptual model development procedure, the first step was to perform critical review of relevant literature and observe typical MOOC development processes. As a result, the initial model was developed. The second step was to conduct the expert review with five educational technology and MOOC researchers to secure the internal validity of the model. Based on the experts’ suggestions, the model was revised and once again reviewed by the same experts. This process resulted in the development of the 2nd version of model. The third step was to carry out external validation research in order to test the effectiveness, efficiency, and usability of the model. A basic model may be confirmed or corrected based on examination of its results. Consequently, the model was elaborated as the final model. In the final model, 6 procedural phases and 9 specific steps were included. The six procedural phases are: Analysis (1st Iteration), Design, Development (Course Development), Implementation, Evaluation, and Analysis (2nd Iteration), a slight variation of ADDIE model. The specific steps include: 1) Goal Setting, 2) Environment Analysis, 3) Content Design, 4) Style Design, 5) Course Development, 6) Implementation Plan, 7) Course Implementation, 8) Summative Evaluation, and 9) Need Reflection. The study concluded with suggestions for further research and application of the MOOC design model.

        <i>Chromobacterium violaceum</i> delivers violacein, a hydrophobic antibiotic, to other microbes in membrane vesicles

        <P><B>Summary</B></P><P>This study describes <I>Chromobacterium violaceum</I>'s use of extracellular membrane vesicles (MVs) to both solubilize and transport violacein to other microorganisms. Violacein is a hydrophobic bisindole with known antibiotic activities against other microorganisms. Characterization of the MVs found they carried more violacein than protein (1.37 ± 0.19‐fold), suggesting they may act as a reservoir for this compound. However, MVs are not produced in response to violacein – a Δ<I>vioA</I> isogenic mutant, which is incapable of making violacein, actually produced significantly more MVs (3.2‐fold) than the wild‐type strain. Although violacein is insoluble in water (Log P<SUB>octanol:water</SUB> = 3.34), 79.5% remained in the aqueous phase when it was present within the <I>C. violaceum</I> MVs, an increase in solubility of 1740‐fold. Moreover, tests with a strain of <I>Staphylococcus aureus</I> showed MV‐associated violacein is bactericidal, with 3.1 mg/l killing 90% of <I>S. aureus</I> in 6 h. Tests with the Δ<I>vioA</I> MVs found no loss in the <I>S. aureus</I> viability, even when its MVs were added at much higher concentrations, demonstrating violacein is the active component within the wild‐type MVs. In conclusion, our study clearly demonstrates <I>C. violaceum</I> produces MVs and uses them as vehicles to solubilize violacein and transport this hydrophobic antibiotic to other microbes.</P>
