A High Performance Soft-Switching AC/DC Converter

This paper introduced a high performance single stage soft-switching AC/DC converter. The introduced soft-switching AC/DC converter uses four switches fullbridge circuit construct to achieve the input power factor correction and the output DC voltage regulation. The introduced soft-switching AC/DC converter adopts interleaved operation mode in ac input side to reduce the input current harmonic and increase the supply power level. Moreover, the introduced soft-switching AC/DC converter can get soft-switching function on its main power switches without soft-switching auxiliary circuit. Thus, the cost of circuit in low. A simple phase-shift control strategy is used to synthesize a suitable low harmonics sinusoidal waveform for the ac input current and achieve well dynamic regulation. A design example of 1000W high performance DC power supply system is examined to assess its performance.
Hybrid Visual Servoing Design for a Continuum Robot under Visibility Constraint and Voice Commands

This paper presents a method to combine voice control and hybrid visual servoing for a continuum robot. In this design, the continuum robot autonomously tracks the element of interest and maintains its position in the safe region based on image information. A method of hybrid visual servoing is proposed to integrate 2D image-based visual servoing (IBVS) to ensure the elements of interests under visibility constraints and 3D position-based visual servoing (PBVS) to adjust the robot to a desired pose in the constraint region. The robotic camera thus provides stable image while tracking the element of interest. In this design, the user can move the continuum robot to acquire the desired view by voice commands. In voice control, the system can recognize connecting words to control the robot. All software modules are integrated using Robot Operating System (ROS) for controlling the continuum robot. Experimental results obtained from a prototype continuum robot verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Screening of a gene library from Paenibacillus sp. PBS-2 generated in Escherichia coli led to the identification of a clone with lipolytic activity. Sequence analysis showed an open reading frame encoding a polypeptide of 378 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular mass of 42 kDa. The esterase displayed 69% and 42% identity with the putative β-lactamases from Paenibacillus sp. JDR-2 and Clostridium sp. BNL1100, respectively. The esterase contained a Serx- x-Lys motif that is conserved among all β-lactamases found to date. The protein PBS-2 was produced in both soluble and insoluble forms when E. coli cells harboring the gene were cultured at 18°C. The enzyme is a serine protein and was active against p-nitrophenyl esters of C2, C4, C8, and C10. The optimum pH and temperature for enzyme activity were pH 9.0 and 30°C, respectively. Relative activity of 55% remained at up to 5°C with an activation energy of 5.84 kcal/mol, which indicates that the enzyme is cold-adapted. Enzyme activity was inhibited by Cd2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+ ions. As expected for a serine esterase, activity was inhibited by phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride. The enzyme was remarkably active and stable in the presence of commercial detergents and organic solvents. This cold-adapted esterase has potential as a biocatalyst and detergent additive for use at low temperatures.
Improving Varying-Pseudonym-Based RFID Authentication Protocols to Resist Denial-of-Service Attacks

Applying Varying Pseudonym (VP) to design of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) authentication protocol outperforms the other existing approaches in several respects. However, this approach is prone to the well-known denial-ofservice (DOS) attack. In this paper, we examine the de-synchronization problems of VP-based RFID authentication protocols, and propose effective solutions to eliminate such weaknesses. We shall show that the proposed solutions indeed improve the security for these protocols, and moreover, these solutions require 0(1) computational cost for identitying a tag and 0(1) key space on the tag. These excellent performances make them very attractive to many RFID applications.

One-step sulfuric acid saccharification of the red alga Pterocladiella capillacea was optimized, and various detoxification methods (neutralization, overliming, and electrodialysis) of the acid hydrolysate were evaluated for fermentation with the thermotolerant yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus. A proximate composition analysis indicated that P. capillacea was rich in carbohydrates. A significant galactose recovery of 81.1 ± 5% was also achieved under the conditions of a 12% (w/v) biomass load, 5% (v/v) sulfuric acid, 121°C, and hydrolysis for 30 min. Among the various detoxification methods, electrodialysis was identified as the most suitable for fermentable sugar recovery and organic acid removal (100% reduction of formic and levulinic acids), even though it failed to reduce the amount of the inhibitor 5-HMF. As a result, K. marxianus fermentation with the electrodialyzed acid hydrolysate of P. capillacea resulted in the best ethanol levels and fermentation efficiency.
Advanced Process Control of the Critical Dimension in Photolithography

This paper describes two run-to-run controllers, a nonlinear multiple exponential-weight moving-average (NMEWMA) controller and a dynamic model-tuning minimum-variance (DMTMV) controller, for photolithography processes. The relationships between the input recipes (exposure dose and focus) and output variables (critical dimensions) were formed using an experimental design method, and the photolithography process model was built using a multiple regression analysis. Both the NMEWMA and DMTMV controllers could update the process model and obtain the optimal recipes for the next run. Quantified improvements were obtained from simulations and real photolithography processes.

This study experimentally investigated the improvement of bond strength and durability of concrete containing high volume fly ash. Concrete mixtures made with 0%, 25% and 60% replacement of cement with class F fly ash were prepared. Water-binder ratios ranged from 0.28 to 0.72. The compressive, flexural and pullout bond strength, the resistance to chloride-ion penetration, and the water permeability of concrete were measured and presented. Test results indicate that except for the concretes at early ages, the mechanical properties, bond strength, and the durability-related chloride-ion permeability and water permeability of concrete containing high volume (60% cement replacement) fly ash were obviously superior to the concrete without fly ash at later ages of beyond 56 days. The enhanced bond strength for the high volume fly-ash concrete either with or without steel confinement is a significant finding which might be valuable for the structural application.

ciated with human papillomaviruses (HPVs), partic-ularly HPV type 16. The clear association between HPV infection and cervical cancer indicates that HPV serves as an ideal target for development of preventive and therapeutic vaccines. Although the recently licensed preventive HPV vaccine, Gardasil, has been shown to be safe and capable of generating significant pro-tection against specific HPV types, it does not have therapeutic effect against established HPV infections teins, E6 and E7, are consistently co-expressed in HPV-expressing cervical cancers and are important in the induction and maintenance of cellular transforma-tion. Therefore, imunotherapy targeting E6 and/or E7 proteins may provide an opportunity to prevent and treat HPV-associated cervical malignancies. It has been established that T cel-mediated imunity is one of the most crucial components to defend against HPV infections and HPV-associated lesions. Therefore, ef-fective therapeutic HPV vaccines should generate ponses. DNA vaccines have emerged as an atractive approach for antigen-specific T cell-mediated im-munotherapy to combat cancers. Intradermal admin-istration of DNA vacines via a gene gun represents an efficient way to deliver DNA vaccines into professional antigen-presenting cells in vivo. Professional anti-gen-presenting cells, such as dendritic cells, are the most efective cells for priming antigen-specific T cells. Using the gene gun delivery system, we tested ing strategies for enhancing MHC class I and class II presentation of encoded model antigen HPV-16 E7. Furthermore, we have developed a strategy to prolong the life of DCs to enhance DNA vaccine potency. More recently, we have developed a strategy to generate an-tigen-specific CD4+T cell imune responses to further enhance DNA vaccine potency. The impressive pre- clinical data generated from our studies have led to several HPV DNA vaccine clinical trials.
