The distribution of vascular plants in four coastal sites of northern (Jeju-si) and southern seashore (Seogwipo-si) of Jeju Island were investigated. The sediment environment was based on sand beach and rock bed. Fifty-two species involving 26 families, 45 genera, 47 species and 4 varieties were identified, and among those, the Gramineae, including 9 species was the most diverse group. 44.2 % of the vascular plant species were halophytes, involving 23 species of 13 families, 21 genera, 20 species, 2 varieties and 1 form. Vitex rotundifolis, Calystegia soldanella and Peucedanum japonicum were distributed in all the studied sites. Vitex rotundifolis was the dominant vegetation in both Pyoseonhaevichi beach and Namwon rock bed, while Vitex rotundifolia-Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens and Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens were predominant in Yongdam rock bed and Sinheung beach. Eight species of naturalized plants covering 4 families and 6 genera were observed; Urbanization and naturalized indices were 2.6 and 15.4 %. In addition to the species of coastal halophytes distributed in sand beach and a narrow rock bed, Limonium tetragonum, Suaeda maritima, Phragmites communis and Atriplex gmelini were found in a muddy sediment along the waterway of Sinheung beach. The most diverse coastal halophytes were observed in Pyoseonhaevichi beach, where the most broad range of plants were provided.

본 연구는 주가수익률의 비대칭적 변화에 관한 중요한 두 이론인 레버리지효과(leverage effect)와 변동성환류효과(volatility feedback effect)를 우리나라 증권시장을 대상으로 실증적 검증을 시도하였다. 수익률의 변동성에 관한 이해는 효율적인 기업의 리스크 관리전략의 수립은 물론 옵션과 같은 파생증권을 활용한 리스크 헤징에 필수적이다. 본 연구는 두 효과의 존재를 개별적으로 검증한 과거의 많은 실증연구들과 달리 두 효과의 동시적 공존(coexistence)을 허용하고 하나의 통합된 검증모형으로 두 효과의 존재여부 및 상대적 중요성을 분석하였다. 실증연구의 결과는 우선 우리 시장에도 리스크의 비대칭적 반응현상이 존재함을 확인해주었다. 그러나 두 효과를 개별적으로 검증한 결과는 모두 부정적이었다. 이것은 비록 약하지만 두 효과 중 어느 하나의 존재를 확인해온 외국의 연구들과 대조적이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 하나의 통합모형으로 두 효과의 존재를 실증적으로 검증하였을때는 변동성환류효과보다는 레버리지효과에 더 호의적인 결과를 얻었다. 이러한 결과는 비대칭적 변동성의 연구에 있어서 두 효과의 동시적 공존을 허용한 통합적 검증방법의 필요함을 시사하는 증거로 해석된다. This study is concerned with one of the well known phenomena about stock return volatility, namely asymmetric volatility. Since accurate estimation and forecasting of volatility is imperative for effective risk management, it is also important to understand what might cause such a asymmetric change of volatility in response to external shocks. Using Korean stock market data, we examined two prominent theories regarding asymmetric volatility, i.e., the leverage effect and the volatility feedback theories, in an integrated frame. First of all, we were able to confirm the existence of asymmetric response in Korean stock market. But we were unable to confirm both effects when we examined them in separate empirical models as did in the most of the previous researches on this subject. However we were able to find some interesting results when we tested both effects in a simultaneous equation model. Unlike the separate test results, we find the evidence to favor the leverage effect hypothesis. Our study is the first of its kind to examine existence of two effects with such an unified model in Korea.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>For the identification of irradiated food, current analysis methods have limitations regarding presence and stability of radiation-induced markers. In this study, different spice blends with small quantity of different irradiated (0, 1 and 10kGy) spice powders, such as red pepper, garlic or ginger, were investigated using PSL and TL techniques. In PSL-based screening analysis, the spice blends containing 10% of irradiated materials (1 or 10kGy) were determined as intermediate or positive. In TL results, the blends containing 1% of 1 or 10kGy-irradiated spices showed the typical TL glow curves that could be interpreted as positive. The blends with irradiated garlic powder provided more good results where identification was possible at 0.5% mixing of irradiated sample. However, the TL ratios of all spice blends were <0.1 and only TL glow curve shape and intensity may be used to discriminate the samples having irradiated component.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► Sample blends with small quantities of irradiated spices were evaluated. ► The PSL was inappropriate to detect irradiated ingredient in small quantity. ► TL glow curve shape and intensity could be used as conclusive evidence of irradiation. ► TL ratios of all irradiated and nonirradiated samples were <0.1.</P>
Effect of Drying Treatment on Physical Identification Characteristics of Irradiated Seasonings

The effect of different drying treatments such as spray drying and vacuum drying on the sensitivity of physical detection methods (photostimulated luminescence (PSL), electron spin resonance (ESR), and thermoluminescence (TL)) was investigated for four types of irradiated seasonings. The slurry feed of each seasoning was exposed to gamma-ray irradiation at doses of 0, 5, 10 kGy before being subjected to drying process. Spray drying was applied to beef and soybean seasoning while garlic and broth seasoning were exposed to vacuum drying according to routine protocols adopted in the industry. The samples were analyzed by PSL as a rapid screening method followed by validated methods including ESR spectroscopy and TL analysis. The PSL photon counts drastically dropped in all irradiated samples after both drying processes. No ESR signal was obtained from any of the irradiated seasonings before or after the drying applications. All the irradiated seasoning samples produced typical TL glow curves between the specific temperature range of 150-250 A degrees C. However, the shape, peak, and intensity of TL glow curves were greatly affected particularly after the spray drying treatment. In conclusion, the dry treatment can significantly affect the irradiation detection characteristics in seasoning samples.

We isolated a citrate synthase gene (citA) from Aspergillus nidulans. By analysis of the protein coding region, citA was shown to encode a citrate synthase (CitA) of 52.2 kDa consisting of 474 amino acid residues that were interrupted by seven introns. Also, the precusor CitA protein was revealed to have an N-terminal mitochondrial targeting signal of 35 amino acid residues containing an R-3 cleavage motif, R_(32)-C-Y↓S_(35), which supports the fact that citA encodes the mitochondrial form of citrate synthase of A. nidulans. Southern blot analysis showed that citA is present as a single copy in the genome.
