<P>Background: Initial left ventricular (LV) systolic function is a main determinant of clinical outcomes in patients with acutemyocardial infarction (AMI). This study was performed to investigate whether AMI patients have different prognostic factors according to their baseline LV systolic function. Methods: A total of 12,988 patients with AMI from a nationwide database were analyzed. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) within 12 months of AMI, including death, nonfatal myocardial infarction (MI), and revascularization, were assessed. Results: Patients were stratified into two groups according to LV ejection fraction (LVEF): those with LVEF < 40% and those with LVEF >= 40%. Patients with LVEF < 40% (n = 1962, 15.1%) were older and had more unfavorable cardiovascular risk factors than those with LVEF >= 40% (n= 11,026, 84.9%). The rate of MACE was higher in patients with LVEF < 40% than in those with LVEF >= 40% (26.8% vs 11.4%, p < 0.001). Independent predictors of 12-month MACEs in patients with LVEF >= 40% were history of MI, high Killip stage, three-vessel disease, and lower renal function, which are already known as risk factors. However, diabetes mellitus (hazard ratio [HR], 1.68; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.17-2.40; p = 0.008), and the use of rennin-angiotensin system (RAS) blockers (HR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.41-0.95; p = 0.029) were independent factors for 12-month MACE in patients with LVEF < 40%. Conclusions: Prognostic factors determining 12-month MACE after AMI are different according to LVEF. Management following AMI should be tailored according to their LV systolic function. A newly developed capture-based sequencing panel for genomic assay of lung cancer

Background The increase in genetic alterations targeted by specific chemotherapy in lung cancer has led to the need for universal use of more comprehensive genetic testing, which has highlighted the development of a lung cancer diagnostic panel using next-generation sequencing. Objective We developed a hybridization capture-based massively parallel sequencing assay named Friendly, Integrated, Research-based, Smart and Trustworthy (FIRST)-lung cancer panel (LCP), and evaluated its performance. Methods FIRST-LCP comprises 64 lung cancer-related genes to test for various kinds of genetic alterations including single nucleotide variations (SNVs), insertions and deletions (indels), copy number variations (CNVs), and structural variations. To assess the performance of FIRST-LCP, we compiled test sets using HapMap samples or tumor cell lines with disclosed genetic information, and also tested our clinical lung cancer samples whose genetic alterations were known by conventional methods. Results FIRST-LCP accomplished high sensitivity (99.4%) and specificity (100%) of the detection of SNVs. High precision was also achieved, with intra- or inter-run concordance rate of 0.99, respectively. FIRST-LCP detected indels and CNVs close to the expected allele frequency and magnitude, respectively. Tests with samples from lung cancer patients also identified all SNVs, indels and fusions. Conclusion Based on the current state of the art, continuous application of the panel design and analysis pipeline following up-to-date knowledge could ensure precision medicine for lung cancer patients.

<P>Antimycin A (AMA) damages mitochondria by inhibiting mitochondrial electron transport and can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS formation, aging, and reduction of mitochondrial biogenesis contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction. The present study sought to investigate extracts of <I>Scutellaria baicalensis</I> and its flavonoids (baicalin, baicalein, and wogonin), whether they could protect mitochondria against oxidative damage. The viability of L6 cells treated with AMA increased in the presence of flavonoids and extracts of <I>S. baicalensis</I>. ATP production decreased in the AMA treated group, but increased by 50% in cells treated with flavonoids (except wogonin) and extracts of <I>S. baicalensis</I> compared to AMA-treated group. AMA treatment caused a significant reduction (depolarized) in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), whereas flavonoid treatment induced a significant increase in MMP. Mitochondrial superoxide levels increased in AMA treated cells, whereas its levels decreased when cells were treated with flavonoids or extracts of <I>S. baicalensis</I>. L6 cells treated with flavonoids and extracts of <I>S. baicalensis</I> increased their levels of protein expression compared with AMA-treated cells, especially water extracts performed the highest levels of protein expression. These results suggest that the <I>S. baicalensis</I> extracts and flavonoids protect against AMA-induced mitochondrial dysfunction by increasing ATP production, upregulating MMP, and enhancing mitochondrial function.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Neuroplasticity is considered essential for recovery from brain injury in developing brains. Recent studies indicate that it is especially effective during early postnatal development and during the critical period. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and local field potential (LFP) electrophysiological recordings in rats that experienced neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury during the critical period to demonstrate that physical exercise (PE) can improve cortical plasticity even when performed during adulthood, after the critical period. We investigated to what extent the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD)-fMRI responses were increased in the contralesional spared cortex, and how these increases were related to the LFP electrophysiological measurements and the functional outcome. The balance of excitation and inhibition was assessed by measuring excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents in stellate cells in the primary somatosensory (S1) cortex, which was compared with the BOLD-fMRI responses in the contralesional S1 cortex. The ratio of inhibitory postsynaptic current (IPSC) to excitatory postsynaptic current (EPSC) at the thalamocortical (TC) input to the spared S1 cortex was significantly increased by PE, which is consistent with the increased BOLD-fMRI responses and improved functional outcome. Our data clearly demonstrate in an experimental rat model of HI injury during the critical period that PE in adulthood enhances neuroplasticity and suggest that enhanced feed-forward inhibition at the TC input to the S1 cortex might underlie the PE-induced amelioration of the somatosensory deficits caused by the HI injury. In summary, the results of the current study indicate that PE, even if performed beyond the critical period or during adulthood, can be an effective therapy to treat neonatal brain injuries, providing a potential mechanism for the development of a potent rehabilitation strategy to alleviate HI-induced neurological impairments.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Physical exercise (PE) enhances cortical plasticity in hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury. </LI> <LI> Cortical plasticity can be monitored by fMRI and electrophysiological recordings. </LI> <LI> Enhanced feed-forward inhibition improves the somatosensory deficits in HI injury. </LI> <LI> PE can be a therapeutic method for brain injuries in newborns and infants. </LI> </UL> </P>

Yield models for photovoltaic(PV) modules are used for calculating the electric power of mono-Si modules and compared by one and half year`s operating data of a large solar PV power plant. Furthermore a regression model for sprinkling effects to lower the temperature of modules is established and efficient operating policy of sprinkling facility employing the regression and recommended yield models is proposed and discussed.

<P>This paper depicts the digital radio test bed design and performance evaluation for digital audio broadcasting, DAB+, and terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting audio systems that are representative digital radio broadcasting standards operating in band III (out-of-band). We consider a laboratory trial to measure the performance of each digital radio system. The existing broadcasting measurement systems have some limitations, such as the small number of available measurement items and broadcasting systems. However, the introduced test bed can cover above representative three digital radio systems and measure various performance parameters. This paper minutely describes not only the test bed designs but also various test results according to the measurement items. Therefore, this paper can help select an appropriate digital radio standard.</P>

<P>Nitric oxide (NO) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) play important roles in the regulation of stem cell proliferation and differentiation. However, it has not been examined whether human periodontal ligament (PDL) cells can differentiate into osteoblast-like cells by NO activity mediated <I>via</I> HO-1. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of NO on proliferation and differentiation in human PDL cells, and to identify the underlying mechanism of its actions. Primary human PDL cells were cultured with NO donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP); cell proliferation and differentiation were measured. NO production, cell viability and cell proliferation were evaluated using the Griess reagent, MTT assay and BrdU incorporation, respectively. To analyze differentiation, we measured alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, osteocalcin (OC), osteonectin (ON) expression, and bone sialoprotein (BSP) by Western blotting. SNP-induced NO production is associated with inducible nitric oxide synthase induction in a time and dose-dependent manner. SNP resulted in decreased cell proliferation and increased expression of osteogenic differentiation markers such as ALP, OC, ON and BSP. Maximal HO-1 was reached with 0.05 m<SMALL>M</SMALL> SNP and gradually decreased with 1.0 m<SMALL>M</SMALL>. Treatment with an HO-1 inhibitor and selective inhibitors of extracellular regulated kinase 1/2 and nuclear factor-kappaB blocked the SNP-induced growth inhibition, as well as osteoblastic differentiation. These data suggest that NO-induced osteogenic differentiation through HO-1 may be an important mediator of periodontal regeneration or bone tissue engineering.</P>

<P>Many countries are converting their analog communication and broadcasting services into digital services. However, digital radio broadcasting service is still an issue to be addressed. In order to provide digital radio broadcasting service, it is very important to choose the most appropriate digital radio method for their frequency environment and listeners. This paper depicts laboratory test results of in-band digital radio technologies, HD Radio and DRM+. To contribute to decision of digital radio standard and design of digital radio transmission network, various results of many test items are expressed.</P>
