Garden microbiomes of Apterostigma dentigerum and Apterostigma pilosum fungus-growing ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

        Cely T. González,Kristin Saltonstall,Hermógenes Fernández-Marín 한국미생물학회 2019 The journal of microbiology Vol.57 No.10

Fungus-growing ants share a complex symbiosis with microbes, including fungal mutualists, antibiotic-producing bacteria, and fungal pathogens. The bacterial communities associated with this symbiosis are poorly understood but likely play important roles in maintaining the health and function of fungal gardens. We studied bacterial communities in gardens of two Apterostigma species, A. dentigerum, and A. pilosum, using next-generation sequencing to evaluate differences between the two ant species, their veiled and no-veiled fungal garden types, and across three collection locations. We also compared different parts of nests to test for homogeneity within nests. Enterobacteriaceae dominated gardens of both species and common OTUs were shared across both species and nest types. However, differences in community diversity were detected between ant species, and in the communities of A. dentigerum veiled and no-veiled nests within sites. Apterostigma pilosum had a higher proportion of Phyllobacteriaceae and differed from A. dentigerum in the proportions of members of the order Clostridiales. Within A. dentigerum, nests with veiled and no-veiled fungus gardens had similar taxonomic profiles but differed in the relative abundance of some groups, with veiled gardens having more Rhodospirillaceae and Hyphomicrobiaceae, and no-veiled having more Xanthomonadaceae and certain genera in the Enterobacteriaceae C. However, bacterial communities in Apterostigma fungal gardens are highly conserved and resemble those of the nests of other attine ants with dominant taxa likely playing a role in biomass degradation and defense. Further work is required to understand and explain how bacterial community composition of fungus-growing nests is maintained.

Thorax masculinization in a transsexual patient: Inferior pedicle mastectomy without an inverted T scar

Cely, Adriana Marcela Gonzalez,Triana, Carlos Enrique,Triana, Lina Maria Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2019 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.46 No.3

Transsexual individuals with gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder are rare, with a prevalence reported to range from 0.002% to 0.014%. Studies have shown that mastectomy yields significant improvements in body image and self-esteem in female-to-male transsexual patients. In patients with grade III breast ptosis, mastectomy with a nipple-areolar complex (NAC) graft is the most commonly used technique, although it has several disadvantages. In the case described herein, a bilateral mastectomy preserving the NAC in an inferior pedicle was performed. Additionally, a thin superior thoracic dermal-fat flap was preserved and eventually sutured at the previous inframammary fold, preventing an inverted T scar. This case shows the advantage of this technique for preserving the blood supply and innervation of the NAC, with a low hypopigmentation risk. Furthermore, in this technique, the patch effect does not impair the results of the NAC graft, and there is no need to use an inverted T scar that may result in thoracic feminization.

A rare case of implant displacement to the contralateral side after gluteal augmentation

Rueda, Juan Dario Alviar,Miranda-Diaz, Audrey Jose,Cely, Adriana Gonzalez,Leon, Diana Carolina Navarro Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2020 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.47 No.4

In this report, we present a rare case of solid silicone implant displacement to the contralateral side after aesthetic gluteal augmentation, a phenomenon that has never been reported before in the literature. A 29-year-old woman with a history of gluteal augmentation 9 months previously and soft tissue infection presented for a consultation due to 3 days of sudden progressive pain in the right gluteus with erythema and edema, without a history of trauma. Displacement of the left gluteal implant to the right gluteal pocket was shown by magnetic resonance imaging. Because the patient refused implant removal, the decision was made to perform capsulotomy, to reconstruct the gluteal pockets, and to preserve the implants. The patient showed a satisfactory early and late postoperative course. Possible causes of this complication include poor surgical technique, with insufficient tissue preservation to keep the pockets apart, and the presence of seroma or hematoma that favored an infectious process, thereby leading to deterioration of the dissected soft tissues with dehiscence of the wound favoring the displacement of the implant.

Selection of a CTAB protocol for high-quality DNA extraction in Oryza sativa L. validated for application in genotyping process based on Illumina sequencing

        Pérez-Pazos Jazmin Vanessa,Romero-Ferrer Jorge Luis,Berdugo-Cely Jhon A. 한국작물학회 2023 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.26 No.4

Rice genotypes with possible tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses are interested in genomic studies for their use in breeding programs. Colombian Plant Germplasm Bank (CPGB) has preserved local rice genotypes without genomic analysis yet. Considering the need to develop genomic studies with these genotypes and minimize costs in the genotyping process, in this research, fve CTAB DNA extraction protocols (P1-P5) were evaluated and compared with a commercial kit. Four local rice accessions from the CPGB were used, and DNA concentration (fuorescence and absorbance), quality (absorbance, integrity, and enzymatic digestion), and cost analysis were determined. A selection index (SI) was established to choose the best DNA protocol. Finally, the selected protocol was validated in 14 local rice genotypes through Illumina sequencing. The six evaluated DNA extraction protocols presented signifcant diferences in quantifcation and quality variables. From the SI established, the protocol selected was the P4 (SI=147.7); this protocol allows obtaining DNA with high concentrations and quality levels at a 50% lower cost than the commercial kit. The sequences generated from the DNA obtained with the P4 protocol presented 7 million reads with high levels of quality (Q30) and length (>50 pb) per evaluated accession; On average, 98.9% of these sequences mapped to the rice genome and identifed up to 15,436 SNP markers without missing data. These results confrm that the DNA from rice local genotypes obtained with the P4 CTAB protocol has the requirements for routine use in genomic studies based on genotyping processes that require Illumina sequencing.

        Collective Experience: A Database-Fuelled, Inter-Disciplinary Team-Led Learning System

Celi, Leo A.,Mark, Roger G.,Lee, Joon,Scott, Daniel J.,Panch, Trishan Korean Institute of Information Scientists and Eng 2012 Journal of Computing Science and Engineering Vol.6 No.1

We describe the framework of a data-fuelled, interdisciplinary team-led learning system. The idea is to build models using patients from one's own institution whose features are similar to an index patient as regards an outcome of interest, in order to predict the utility of diagnostic tests and interventions, as well as inform prognosis. The Laboratory of Computational Physiology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology developed and maintains MIMIC-II, a public deidentified high- resolution database of patients admitted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. It hosts teams of clinicians (nurses, doctors, pharmacists) and scientists (database engineers, modelers, epidemiologists) who translate the day-to-day questions during rounds that have no clear answers in the current medical literature into study designs, perform the modeling and the analysis and publish their findings. The studies fall into the following broad categories: identification and interrogation of practice variation, predictive modeling of clinical outcomes within patient subsets and comparative effectiveness research on diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions. Clinical databases such as MIMIC-II, where recorded health care transactions - clinical decisions linked with patient outcomes - are constantly uploaded, become the centerpiece of a learning system.

Effects of Perinatal Nutrition on Metabolic and Hormonal Profiles of Goat Kids (Capra hircus) during Their First Day of Life

Celi, Pietro,Di Trana, Adriana,Claps, Salvatore,Di Gregorio, Paola Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2008 Animal Bioscience Vol.21 No.11

The aim of the present work was to monitor metabolic and hormonal profiles in newborn kids, born from dams fed diets with low or high levels of energy requirements. Starting from the last month of pregnancy, 14 goats were randomly allocated to two groups: Group LD (low diet) and Group HD (high diet) that received a diet that covered 80% and 140% of their energy requirement, respectively. At delivery, the kids were weighed and a blood sample was taken before they suckled colostrum (Time 0) and 1, 2, 3, 12 and 24 h after they started suckling. Plasma insulin, IGF-I, glucose, fT3 and fT4 concentrations were not influenced by the dietary treatments, but a significant effect of time was observed as they progressively increased during the first 12 h of life. Plasma cholesterol, triglyceride, albumin, globulin and total protein plasma concentrations were significantly higher in Group HD than those of Group LD. In Group HD, cortisol concentrations were significantly lower than those of Group LD. Positive correlations were observed between LW and IGF-I (r = 0.71; p<0.05), plasma insulin and glucose (r = 0.79; p<0.05) and total protein and globulin concentrations (r = 0.97; p<0.001). Our results show that perinatal nutrition affects newborn goat kids' metabolic and hormonal profile.

Evaluation of Ball End Micromilling for Ti6Al4V ELI Microneedles Using a Nanoadditive Under MQL Condition

        Pavel Celis,Elisa Vazquez,Cintya G. Soria-Hernández,Diego Bargnani,Ciro A. Rodriguez,Elisabetta Ceretti,Erika García-López 한국정밀공학회 2022 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.9 No.5

The use of nanoadditives in lubricants has gained much attention to the research community due to the enhancement of tribological properties and cooling capabilities. This paper studies the advantages of using a MQL (Minimum Quantity of Lubrication) system and nanoadditive in the manufacture of microneedle arrays in Ti6Al4V ELI alloy. Tungsten carbide ball nose tools with a cutting diameter of 200 μm were used in experimental tests. Surface and dimensional characterization was performed to evaluate the impact of a nanoadditive to a vegetable-based oil. Additionally, cutting forces and cutting edge radius (CER) were measured while needles were machined. Experimental tests confirmed that micro end milling with nanoadditives provide slightly better dimensional features and low cutting forces compared to oil. The performance of nanoadditives resulted in a reduction of surface roughness (~ 0.3 μm). Qualitative study of microneedles illustrated burr formation on needle surface manufactured without a nanoadditive solution. Results reveal an increment of CER using low feed rate values (2.0 μm/flute) while a reduction of CER was observed with feed rates up to 2.5 μm/flute. Our results indicated that the addition of nanoadditives to vegetable oil promotes a better product surface topography and cutting tool performance.

An Approach to Art Collections Management and Content-based Recovery

De Celis Herrero, Concepcion Perez,Alvarez, Jaime Lara,Aguilar, Gustavo Cossio,Garcia, Maria Josefa Somodevilla Korea Information Processing Society 2011 Journal of information processing systems Vol.7 No.3

This study presents a comprehensive solution to the collection management, which is based on the model for Cultural Objects (CCO). The developed system manages and spreads the collections that are safeguarded in museums and galleries more easily by using IT. In particular, we present our approach for a non-structured search and recovery of the objects based on the annotation of artwork images. In this methodology, we have introduced a faceted search used as a framework for multi-classification and for exploring/browsing complex information bases in a guided, yet unconstrained way, through a visual interface.
