Elastic properties of bismuth layered perovskite compounds, LaxBi4..xTi3O12 (LBT-x) and SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT), were examined at room temperature by Brillouin scattering. Elastic stiness coecients, c33 and c44, dened in the pseudotetragonal symmetry, were obtained. The longitudinal sound velocities propagating along the c axis, were 3985 m/s and 3118 m/s for the pure bismuth titanate (BTO) and SBT, respectively. The sound velocity of SBT is very slow and is believed to be related with the weak interlayer bonding of this layer-structure compound. A simple linear chain model showed that the dierence in the sound velocity between BTO and SBT is mainly due to the dierence in the c axis lattice constant. The sound velocity of LBT-x increased slightly with the increase of x, while c33 seems to be insensitive to x.

The temperature variations of the elastic constant C11 and the corresponding acoustic attenuation coefficient of barium titanate single crystals grown by two different methods in the paraelectric phase were obtained in a wide temperature by means of Brillouin light scattering. Two phenomenological approaches were adopted to attempt to explain the anomalous change in C11 (denoted as DC11) in the paraelectric phase. ΔC11 exhibited a logarithmic variation as log[(T-T0)/T0] in a certain temperature range from Tc to about Tc+ 80 ℃ instead of the other variation of (T-T0) predicted by the mean-field approach. This temperature range was almost the same as the range where precursor dynamics were theoretically predicted to set in. The fact that the logarithmic variation was proposed for uniaxial systems might indicate that the correlated deformation of precursor polar clusters is tetragonal, as was suggested from nuclear magnetic resonance study [7].

<B>Graphic Abstract</B> <P>We present a simple strategy for the fabrication of porous carbon nanofibers (see figure). This procedure produces thin webs by electrospinning a polymer solution containing different concentrations of zinc chloride and subsequently thermally treating the system. <P>A genome-wide association study (GWAS) for cold medicine-related Stevens-Johnson syndrome (CM-SJS) with severe ocular complications (SOC) was performed in a Japanese population. A recently developed ethnicity-specific array with genome-wide imputation that was based on the whole-genome sequences of 1070 unrelated Japanese individuals was used. Validation analysis with additional samples from Japanese individuals and replication analysis using samples from Korean individuals identified two new susceptibility loci on chromosomes 15 and 16. This study might suggest the usefulness of GWAS using the ethnicity-specific array and genome-wide imputation based on large-scale whole-genome sequences. Our findings contribute to the understanding of genetic predisposition to CM-SJS with SOC.</P>
γ-LA-Supplementation to IVC for IVP Bovine Embryos

The present study aimed to examine the effects of ${\gamma}$-linolenic acid (GLA) supplementation to in vitro culture (IVC) medium on in vitro developmental competence, freezability and morphology of in vitro matured and fertilized bovine embryos. In vitro produced (IVP) bovine zygotes were cultured in IVC medium supplemented with 0 (negative control), 15, 31, 62, 125, 250, 500 or 1,000 ppm GLA, 250 ppm linoleic acid albumin (LAA) and without any supplement as a control. Day 6 blastocysts derived from culture control were cultured in IVC medium containing either 62, 250 GLA or 250 LAA for 24 h, and at Day 7 were subjected to freezing or morphological examination by electron microscope. GLA 15 showed a tendency to have a higher cleavage rate at Day 2 (70.3%) than other groups. The hatching rate at Day 9 in LAA (38.2%) was significantly higher than the control and all treatment groups (p<0.05), while the blastocyst rate in LAA (32.4%) did not differ from those of 15 (30.5%), 31 (27.1%), and 62 GLA (33.1%) or the control (35.1%). GLA in concentrations of 125, 250, 500, and 1,000 ppm had significantly detrimental effect on the blastocyst rate compared to 15, 31 and 62 ppm GLA, LAA, and control groups (p<0.05). In contrast, the highest post-thaw survival rate (100%) was observed in the control group (p<0.01). Large lipid droplets were observed in the cytoplasm of trophoblastic cells, even in the control, but were abundant in GLA groups. Taking the results of the study into consideration, the addition of GLA to the culture medium for IVP bovine embryos at the dose of 15 ppm increased the developmental competence of zygotes and enhanced the cleavage rate up to Day 2. However, blastulation rate and post-thaw survival were not increased when GLA was added to the culture media.
