Depressive Symptoms in Newly Diagnosed Lung Carcinoma: Prevalence and Associated Risk Factors

        K. K. Shahedah, M.Med.,S. H. How, M.Med.,A. R. Jamalludin, M.P.H.,M. T. Mohd Faiz, M.Med.,Y. C. Kuan, M.R.C.P.,C. K. Ong, M.R.C.P. 대한결핵및호흡기학회 2019 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.82 No.3

Background: Depression is a recognized complication of lung cancer underreported in developing countries such as Malaysia. Treating and identifying depression in cancer patients increases survival and quality of life. Our objectives are to study prevalence of depressive symptoms in newly diagnosed lung carcinoma, and examine the relationship of depressive symptoms with other influencing risk factors. Methods: A 2-year, cross sectional study February 2015–February 2017, was conducted at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan, and Penang General Hospital. One hundred and three patients with newly diagnosed, biopsy confirmed primary lung carcinoma were recruited. Self-rated patient’s identification sheet, validated Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D), and Dukes University Religion Index score from three different main languages were used. Results: Prevalence of current depressive symptoms (CES-D total score ≥16) is 37.9%. The result suggests prevalence of those at high risk of moderate to major depression, may need treatment. Multivariate analysis reveals those with good Eastern Cooperation Oncology Group factor (η2=0.24, p<0.001) married (η2=0.14, p<0.001) with intrinsic religiosity (IR) (η2=0.07, p<0.02) are more resistant to depression. Conclusion: One in three of lung carcinoma patients, are at increased risk for depression. Clinicians should be aware that risk is highest in those with poor performance status, single, and with poor IR. We suggest routine screening of depression symptoms as it is feasible, to be performed during a regular clinic visit with immediate referral to psychiatrist when indicated.

Interactions of methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin and hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble emulsion (HASE) polymers: a rheological study

        Gupta, R.K.,Tam, K.C.,Ong, S.H.,Jenkins, R.D. The Korean Society of Rheology 2000 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.12 No.2

The interactions between methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin (CD) and hydrophobically modified alkali-soluble associative polymers (HASE) were examined by a rheological technique. The effect of "capping" of hydrophobes by methylated $\beta$-cyclodextrin on the viscosity and modulus was evaluated. Model HASE polymers with $C_1$to $C_{20}$ alkyl hydrophobic groups ethoxylated with~10 moles of ethylene-oxide (EO 10) and at concentrations up to 3 wt% were examined. With the addition of methylated $\beta$-CD, the steady shear viscosity profiles shift from a Newtonian profile to one that display a shear-thinning characteristic. Significant "capping" of the hydrophobes occurs for HASE polymers with $C_{l2}$, $C_{16}$ and $C_{20}$ hydrophobes as reflected by the large reduction in the viscosity. However, the steady shear viscosity remains constant when the concentration of $\beta$-CD exceeds 1 wt%, suggesting that $\beta$-CD is not able to fully encapsulate the hydrophobes of the HASE polymer. The temperature variation plots indicate that the activation energy of the HASE-EO10-$C_{20}$ system and $\beta$-CD is dependent on the magnitude of the applied shear stress. These results further reinforce the hypothesis that $\beta$-CD is not able to completely remove all the hydrophobic associations.phobic associations.

Effect of Contact Pad’s Roughness and Ni–P Plating Thickness on Leadless Packages’ Shear Strength Variation

        K. T. Lau,C. G. Ong,R. F. Munawar,A. B. Arif 한국전기전자재료학회 2021 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.22 No.1

Studies on shear strength of thin small leadless packages (TSLP) focused predominantly on solder and refl ow factors. Contact pad’s surface roughness (R a ) and Ni–P thickness factors, though rather important, have not been reported widely. Thus, the current study investigates the effect of TSLP’s contact pad, in terms of R a and Ni–P’s thickness, on shear strength variation of the TSLP after being soldered on PCB. The R a was controlled by using different Cu alloy leadframes, etchant’s pH and etching conveyor speeds. A shear test was conducted on the soldered TSLP using the Dage Series-4000-Bond-Tester as per Infi neon’s specifications. The shear test data was supported by failure mode results in the form of scanning electron microscopy images and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The present work revealed that TSLP with high contact pad’s R a exhibited a wide shear strength variation. In addition, thicker Ni–P signifi cantly enlarged the shear strength variation of TSLP when the etched surface of the contact pad’s R a is low. After solder refl ow, the contact pad’s high R a and Ni–P thickness triggered the formation of more heterogeneous pores in the solder region of the solder joint between TSLP and PCB. This resulted in shear failure at the porous solder region and heterogeneous shear strength of the soldered TSLP.

      • Acoustic Vibration Sensor Based on Macro-Bend Coated Fiber For Pipeline Leakage Detection

        K. S. Ong,W. H. Png,H. S. Lin,C. H. Pua,F. A. Rahman 제어로봇시스템학회 2017 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2017 No.10

In this paper, a simple fabricated and low cost acoustic vibration sensor based on macro-bend coated single-mode fiber (SMF-28) is proposed and developed. The fiber optic sensor comprises of a bending structure and the macro-bending loss was employs as the sensing mechanism for the detection of leakage of pipeline at low frequency. The measurement system involving the proposed fiber sensor is presented and investigated. Through this system, the fiber sensor is characterized by measuring the power loss corresponding to the vibration at various bending radius and number of wrapping turns. Furthermore, the proposed fiber sensor is also implemented in field test (water pipeline) and it is able to detect vibrations at the frequency range of 20 Hz to 2500 Hz.

Physical, Chemical and Biomethanation Characteristics of Stratified Cattle-Manure Slurry

Ong, H.K.,Pullammanappallil, P.C.,Greenfield, P.F. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2000 Animal Bioscience Vol.13 No.11

In the quiescent state, cattle-manure slurry stratifies into three discernible layers, namely a floating scum layer, a bottom sludge layer and a watery middle layer. The proportions of top (scum), middle and bottom (sludge) layers were approximately 20, 60 and 20% respectively of the volume of the whole slurry. Particulate matter from the different stratified layers was characterised for particle size distribution and cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin composition. Total solids concentrations of top, middle and bottom layers were 12.7, 2.8 and 7.4% respectively. Larger particles were found in the top layer compared with the bottom. The top layer contained the highest amounts of Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF), Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF), cellulose and hemicellulose, but the lowest amount of Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN). The bottom layer contained the highest amounts of Acid Detergent Lignin (ADL) and TKN. With increase in particle size, there were increases in NDF, ADF, cellulose and hemicellulose, accompanied by decreases in ADL and TKN. Biochemical methane potential of the three layers was also measured. The top layer was found to produce the most methane with the middle layer producing the least. Biomethanation rate from the top layer was also the highest. Differences in biomethanation rates and biochemical methane potential were attributed to differences in chemical composition of the particulate matter. About 48%, 23% and 30% of the total chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the top, middle and bottom layers respectively of the slurry was found to be degradable.

Fodder Productivity and Growth Persistency of Three Local Cassava Varieties

        Tung, C.M.,Liang, J.B.,Tan, S.L.,Ong, H.K.,Jelan, Z.A. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2001 Animal Bioscience Vol.14 No.9

Three cassava varieties, namely MM 92 (MM), Black Twig (BT) and Local (LC), were arranged in a randomized complete block design to evaluate their dry fodder and crude protein (CP) productivity as well as growth persistency. Cassava plants grown in small plots of $5m{\times}10m$ at a planting distance of $25cm{\times}25cm$ were harvested every 6 weeks starting from 3 months after planting. Dry fodder yields of MM, BT and LC over the 8 harvests were 8.55, 8.01 and 6.15 t/ha, respectively. All varieties produced more leaves than stems with average leaf:stem ratios of 5, 5.9 and 4.8 for MM, BT and LC, respectively. In terms of CP production, MM was the highest yielder (272 kg/ha/harvest), followed by BT and LC (238 and 184 kg/ha/harvest, respectively). The total accumulative CP amounts over the 8 harvests were 2179, 1903 and 1474 kg/ha for MM, BT and LC, respectively. The mortality rates were 9.91, 14.01 and 13.98% for MM, BT and LC, respectively. Phosphorus content was more stable than potassium content during defoliation. MM, BT and LC had whole plant phosphorus contents of 0.41, 0.41 and 0.39%, respectively; whole plant potassium contents were 1.25, 1.38 and 1.20%.
