      • Deficits in motor abilities for multi-finger force control in hemiparetic stroke survivors

        <P>The ability to control redundant motor effectors is one of hallmarks in human motor control, and the topic has been studied extensively over several decades since the initial inquiries proposed by Nicholi Bernstein. However, our understanding of the influence of stroke on the control of redundant motor systems is very limited. This study aimed to investigate the effect of stroke-related constraints on multi-finger force control abilities in a visuomotor task. Impaired (IH) and less-impaired hands (LH) of 19 hemiparetic stroke survivors and 19 age-matched control subjects were examined. Each hand repeatedly produced isometric forces to match a target force of 5 N shown on a computer screen using all four fingers. The hierarchical variability decomposition (HVD) model was used to separate force-matching errors (motor performance) into task-relevant measures (accuracy, steadiness, and reproducibility). Task-irrelevant sources of variability in individual finger force profiles within and between trials (flexibility and multiformity) were also quantified. The IH in the stroke survivors showed deficits in motor performance attributed mainly to lower accuracy and reproducibility as compared to control hands (p < 0.05). The LH in stroke survivors showed lower reproducibility and both hands in stroke also had higher multiformity than the control hands (p < 0.05). The findings from our HVD model suggest that accuracy, reproducibility, and multiformity were mainly impaired during force-matching task in the stroke survivors. The specific motor deficits identified through the HVD model with the new conceptual framework may be considered as critical factors for scientific investigation on stroke and evidence-based rehabilitation of this population.</P>

      • The effect of a horse riding simulator on energy expenditure, enjoyment, and task difficulty in the elderly

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Introduction</B></P> <P>Energy expenditure, enjoyment, and task difficulty were compared for exercise with a horse riding simulator (HRS) and real horseback riding (RHR), and analyzed according to riding speed and participant age.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>The HRS and RHR groups comprised 19 and 18 young adults and 21 and 10 elderly subjects, respectively. A visual analog scale was used to measure perceived enjoyment and task difficulty, and pulmonary gas exchange was used to calculate oxygen uptake and metabolic equivalents (METs). Participants either rode the simulator on a treadmill or a real horse on a treadmill at various speeds for 15min.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>Participants reported greater enjoyment from riding a real horse. There were no significant differences between groups in task difficulty, oxygen uptake, or METs. When the speed increased, the gait pattern elicited faster and more complex coordination, and significantly improved energy expenditure, enjoyment, and task difficulty. The elderly showed greater enjoyment and less task difficulty than young adults.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>HRS and RHR provide low-level exercise intensity. The elderly reported greater enjoyment and less task difficulty than young adults for both HRS and RHR exercise. These results indicate that HRS might be a feasible substitute for RHR for the elderly, with comparable exercise effects at low intensity. Low-intensity exercise provided by HRS could also be a safe and appealing intervention for the elderly.</P>

        빅데이터 기반의 모빌리티 분석

        본 연구에서는 통신 데이터를 이용하여 기종점통행량 등 교통 모빌리티를 분석하는 방법론을 제안하였다. 모바일 기지국 위치정보 기반의 통신 데이터를 이용하여 개인의 통행사슬(Trip Chain) DB를 구축하고 일별 통행 패턴을 추출하여 통행 특성을 분석하였다. 분석의 신뢰성 제고를 위해서 기지국의 영향권을 맵 매칭하고, 통신 데이터가 가지는 Ping pong Handover 문제를 보정하는 로직을 개발하였으며, 기지국 영향권 내에서 Pass By와 Stay를 구분하는 분석기준을 제안하였다. 개발된 분석 방법을 활용하여 전국 지역 간 통행, 도시 및 지방 지역의 통행 발생과 분포를 추정하고 기존의 전통적인 분석방법론과 비교 검증하였다. In this study, a mobility analysis method is suggested to estimate an O/D trip demand estimation using Mobile Phone Signaling Data. Using mobile data based on mobile base station location information, a trip chain database was established for each person and daily traffic patterns were analyzed. In addition, a new algorithm was developed to determine the traffic characteristics of their mobilities. To correct the ping pong handover problem of communication data itself, the methodology was developed and the criteria for stay time was set to distinguish pass by between stay within the influence area. The big-data based method is applied to analyze the mobility pattern in inter-regional trip and intra-regional trip in both of an urban area and a rural city. When comparing it with the results with traditional methods, it seems that the new methodology has a possibility to be applied to the national survey projects in the future.

        The Onset Time of Neck and Shoulder Muscles Activation During Shoulder Elevation in Older and Young Adults

        This study examined differences in the time to onset of neck and shoulder muscle activation during arm elevation in older and younger adults. Eleven older and 10 younger adults were recruited. Data from neck and shoulder muscles were recorded as a subject elevated one arm. The mean time to onset of muscle activation was compared using an independent t-test. Older adults demonstrated significantly later onset of contraction of the ipsilateral sternocleidomastoid during shoulder flexion (p = 0.046), as well as significantly later contraction of the middle deltoid (p = 0.005), posterior deltoid (p = 0.027), contralateral splenius capitis (p = 0.008), upper trapezius (p = 0.020), middle trapezius (p = 0.012), lower trapezius (p = 0.012), and infraspinatus (p = 0.001) during shoulder abduction. These findings indicate that older adults use different neuromuscular strategies than younger adults during arm elevation. These changes could result from age-related decline in the neuromuscular system. The findings could be used to identify contributors to neck and shoulder discomfort or dysfunctionin older adults.

        Effects of Cervical Stabilization Exercise Using Sling on Hamstring Flexibility in Patients with Chronic Neck Pain

        Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cervical stabilization exercise (CSE) on hamstring flexibility in patients with neck pain. A secondary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of cervical range of motion (CROM) and craniovertebral angle (CVA). Methods: This study was a single-blind, randomized, comparative trial. Twenty patients were allocated into either the cranio-cervical flexion exercise (CCFE) group or the CSE group. Before and after the intervention, we measured straight leg raise (SLR), popliteal angle (PA), CROM, and CVA in the sitting and standing positions. Fisher’s exact test, the Mann-Whitney test, and Wilcoxon’s signed-rank test were used to analyze our data. Results: Both groups showed significant improvements in the value of SLR, PA, cervical extension, cervical rotation, and CVA in the standing position (both, p<.05) after intervention. However, only the CSE group showed significant improvements in cervical right lateral flexion (z=−2.209; p<.01) and cervical left lateral flexion (z=−2.537; p<.05) after intervention. The CSF group showed more significant improvements in SLR, PA, both cervical lateral flexions, and both cervical rotations than the CCFE group. Conclusions: The results of this study will guide future research in identifying the effectiveness of CSE. In conclusion, it can be inferred that CSE has a positive effect on SLR, PA, CROM, and CVA in the standing position in patients with chronic neck pain.

        플루트 연주자 경력에 따른 신체·심리학적 요인의 변화

        연주자와 관련된 근골격계질환(playing-related musculoskeletal disorders, PRMDs)의 치료와 예방은 악기의 특성, 연주 자세, 연주 환경, 연주자의 신체 변화 그리고 사회심리학적 요인을 고려해야 한다. 지금까지 연주와 관련된 근골격계질환은 일반 환자의 경우와 같이 포괄적으로 이해하고 다루어져 왔으나, 연주자의 특성을 고려하면 일반적인 적용은 한계가 있다. 최근 플루트 연주 동호인들이 증가하는 추세와 더불어 연주 관련 근골격계질환의 치료와 예방에 관한 관심과 요구가 높아지고 있다. 그러나 플루트 연주자만을 위한 구체적이고 체계적인 치료 가이드와 예방책은 마련되어있지 않다. 이에 본 연구는 플루트 전공 여성 연주자의 연주 관련 근골격계질환 유병률 및 통증 정도, 관절운동 범위, 상지 기능 장애, 사회심리학적 요인을 조사하여 연주 경력에 따라 분석하였다. 그 결과 본 연구에 참여한 20년 이상의 경력을 가진 여성 플루트 연주자(21명, 평균 연령: 31.57 ± 9.81세)들이 10년 이하의 연주자들에 비교해 근골격계 통증에 대한 높은 공포-회피 반응을 보였다. 또한, 경력에 따른 차이는 발견되지 않았으나, 플루트 연주자들은 어깨와 목의 관절 운동 범위가 정상 운동 범위보다 감소하거나 증가하여 있었다. 이는 플루트 연주자들의 근골격계질환 치료와 예방책 마련을 위해 경력을 고려한 연주자의 사회심리학적 요인과 신체 요인에 대한 적용이 필요하다는 것을 의미한다. A development of prevention and therapy program for playing-related musculoskeletal disorders(PRMDs) have to include a characteristics of instrument, playing posture, playing environments and physical and psychological factors of instrumental musicians. Although the prevalence of musicians’PRMDs have been reported, there is poor understanding of instrument-specific risk factors associated with PRMDs. To identify physical, psychological and behavioral risk factors of female flutist’ PRMDs, we examine a prevalence of PRMDs, pain intensity, functional disabilities in upper extremities, psychological and behavioral factors through self-administered questionnaire and range of motion through an examination with physical therapist. Twenty-one flutist were participated. Data from flutist were analyzed according to playing experience (3-10 yrs, 11-20 yrs, 21-30 yrs) using one-way ANOVA. The Fear-avoidance beliefs about work of flutist with playing experience over 20 yrs showed significantly higher compared with flutist with playing experience less than 10 yrs. The range of motions in shoulder and neck of participated flutist showed less range of motion, except for shoulder external rotation, compared with normal person who was examined in previous study. Fear-avoidance belief is associated with playing experience of female flutist. Since the hyper-decreased or hyper-increase range of motion in shoulder and neck could play an important risk factor for PRMDs, a development of prevention or management program for female flutist have to consider not physical factors but psychological factors.

        한국 육상 100m 허들의 성장기: 한국 신기록 변천을 중심으로

        이 연구는 한국 육상경기 100m 허들 종목의 최초 한국 신기록 수립 시점인 1969년부터 2019년까지 한국기록이 발전되고 성장해온 과정들을 경기기록사 방법을 적용하여 살펴보았다. 100m 허들의 첫 한국기록은 1969년 전국체육대회에서 금향순(경북) 선수가 수립한 16초2였다. 1년 후, 정옥주(동래여고) 선수가 0.1초 단축시켰고 1971년 박관수(기전여고) 선수가 15초6을 기록하면서 15초대에 진입하였다. 1973년, 우선숙(경남여고) 선수가 아시아선수권에서 14초5로 한국 신기록을 수립하며, 100m 허들 종목은 14초대에 진입까지 빠르게 발전한다. 7년간 기록 정체 후, 1980년부터 전옥금(전북체고, 삼성전자) 선수가 6년간 5회의 한국 신기록을 수립하였고 100분의 1 전자 측정이 도입한 이후, 1982년에는 14초67, 1985년에는 14초53까지 한국기록을 단축시켰다. 1988년, 방신혜(경북대) 선수가 13초80을 기록하며, 100m 허들은 13초대에 진입하게 된다. 2000년에 들어서면서 이연경 선수는 13초47(2004년)의 한국기록을 시작으로 2010년까지 13초00까지 단축시키며, 8회의 한국기록을 수립하게 되는데 2010년 광저우 아시안게임에서 우승하며, 한국 100m 허들을 아시아 정상에 올려놓는다. 8년 뒤, 2018년 자카르타-팔렘방 아시안게임에서 정혜림 선수가 우승을 차지하며, 한국 100m 허들 종목은 아시아의 강자로 자리 잡게 된다. The purpose of this study, it was reviewed that the process in which Korean record was developed and changed from 1960, when Korean record was set for the first time in the 100m hurdle of the Korea Track and Field, to 2019. The first Korean record of 100m hurdle was 16.2 second set by Hyangsoon Keum (Gyeongbuk) at Korean National Sports Festival in 1976. A year later, Ok-joo Jeong (Dongnae Girl's High School) shortened 0.1 seconds, Kwan-su Park of Kijun Girls High School entered into the 15 seconds with 15.6 seconds, and women’s hurdle was developed quickly and reached the 14 seconds as Sun-sook Woo (Gyeongnam Girls’ High School) established 14.5 seconds. After stagnant record for seven years, Ok-keum Jeon (Jeonbuk Physical High School, Samsung Electronics) established Korean records 5 times for 6 years from 1980, made the record of 14.67 seconds in 1882 when it was introduced 1/100 electronic measurement, and shortened it to 14.53 seconds in 1985. Korea women’s hurdle entered into 13 seconds as Sin-hye Bank (Kyungpook National University) shortened to 13.80 seconds in National Track and Field Championship in 1988. Since 2000, Yeon-kyung Lee made 8 times Korean records as starting 13.47 seconds (2004) and shortening to 13 seconds in 2010. And she won the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Game and put Korean women 100m hurdle on the top of Asia. At the 2018 Jakarta Asian Game, Hye-rim Jeong won a gold medal again after 8 years and kept the pride of Korean 100 hurdle.
