Richard Graham(리차드 그라함),Brian Bridges(브라이언 브릿지스) 한국전자음악협회 2016 에밀레 Vol.14 No.-

This paper describes the mapping of embodied metaphors found within physical systems to the spatial organization of voices and timbral processes. The intention of such an approach is to enhance the clarity and richness of connections between performance gestures and sonic structures. Previous system iterations have presented mappings informed by ecological–embodied metaphors of dynamic forces as a means to bridge cross-domain performance events across physical and figurative planes. The first iteration sought to reify gravitationally based tonal pitch space models by mapping melodic syntax computations (such as attraction, tension, and inertia analogues) to in–kind parameters of a flocking algorithm as a method of dynamic audio spatialization. Given the embodied physical bases implied by musical models proposed by Lerdahl and Smalley, we present a system that further explores the ecological bases of musical abstraction through the lens of force–based mapping models for spatial audio and timbral processing. The present iteration of the system utilizes a physics engine in a game development environment as a base for a practice–led exploration of mappings encompassing a wider variety of force–relational dynamics (derived from instrumental note–events) as applied to the evolution of spatial and timbral gestures. A particular focus is the treatment of energy-motion trajectories within the system’s mapping. While spatialization and diffusion is an obvious output modality for such a mapping, practice–led explorations of these embodied concepts, as facilitated by this system, may also inform a relational model of timbral connections.

A Simple Metric for Assessing the Severity of Partial Discharge Activity Based on Time-Sequence-Analysis-Discharge Level Patterns

Stewart Brian G,Yang Lily,Judd Martin D,Reid Alistair,Fouracre Richard A The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2006 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.7 No.6

This paper introduces a partial discharge (PD) severity metric, S, based on the evaluation of time-sequence PD data capture and resulting Time-Sequence-Analysis Discharge (TSAD) level distributions. Basically based on an IEC60270 measurement technique, each PD event is time stamped and the discharge level noted. By evaluating the time differences between a previous and subsequent discharge, a 3D plot of time-sequence activity and discharge levels can be produced. From these parameters a measurement of severity, which takes into account dynamic or instantaneous variations in both the time of occurrence and the level of discharge, rather than using standard repetition rate techniques, can be formulated. The idea is to provide a measure of the severity of PD activity for potentially measuring the state of insulation within an item of plant. This severity measure is evaluated for a simple point-plane geometry in $SF_{6}$ as a function of gap distance and applied high voltage. The results show that as the partial discharge activity increases, the severity measure also increases. The importance of future investigations, quantifications and evaluations of the robustness, sensitivity and importance of such a severity measurement, as well as comparing it with typical repetition rate assessment techniques, and other monitoring techniques, are also very briefly discussed.

      • Structural templating of multiple polycrystalline layers in organic photovoltaic cells

        Lassiter, Brian E.,Lunt, Richard R.,Renshaw, C. Kyle,Forrest, Stephen R. The Optical Society 2010 Optics express Vol.18 No.suppl3

We demonstrate that organic photovoltaic cell performance is influenced by changes in the crystalline orientation of composite layer structures. A 1.5 nm thick self-organized, polycrystalline template layer of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) orients subsequently deposited layers of a diindenoperylene exciton blocking layer, and the donor, copper phthalocyanine (CuPc). Control over the crystalline orientation of the CuPc leads to changes in its frontier energy levels, absorption coefficient, and surface morphology, resulting in an increase of power conversion efficiency at 1 sun from 1.42 ± 0.04% to 2.19 ± 0.05% for a planar heterojunction and from 1.89 ± 0.05% to 2.49 ± 0.03% for a planar-mixed heterojunction.

      • Practical design guidlines for semi-continuous composite braced frames

        J.Y. Richard Liew,K.L. Looi,Brian Uy 국제구조공학회 2001 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.1 No.2

This paper presents a simplified approach for the design of semi-continuous composite beams in braced frames, where specific attention is given to the effect of joint rotational stiffness. A simple composite beam model is proposed incorporating the effects of semi-rigid end connections and the nonprismatic properties of a ‘cracked’ steel-concrete beam. This beam model is extended to a sub-frame in which the restraining effects from the adjoining members are considered. Parametric studies are performed on several sub-frame models and the results are used to show that it is possible to correlate the amount of moment redistribution of semi-continuous beam within the sub-frame using an equivalent stiffness of the connection. Deflection equations are derived for semi-continuous composite beams subjected to various loading and parametric studies on beam vibrations are conducted. The proposed method may be applied using a simple computer or spreadsheet program.

Faster-than-real-time Hybrid Automotive Underwater Glider Simulation for Ocean Mapping

        Woen-Sug Choi,Brian Bingham,Richard Camilli 해양환경안전학회 2022 해양환경안전학회지 Vol.28 No.3

The introduction of autonomous underwater gliders (AUGs) specifically addresses the reduction of operational costs that were previously prohibited with conventional autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) using a scaling-down design philosophy by utilizing the characteristics of autonomous drifters to far extend operation duration and coverage. Long-duration, wide-area missions raise the cost and complexity of in-water testing for novel approaches to autonomous mission planning. As a result, a simulator that supports the rapid design, development, and testing of autonomy solutions across a wide range using software-in-the-loop simulation at faster-than-real-time speeds becomes critical. This paper describes a faster-than-real-time AUG simulator that can support high-resolution bathymetry for a wide variety of ocean environments, including ocean currents, various sensors, and vehicle dynamics. On top of the de facto standard ROS-Gazebo framework and open-sourced underwater vehicle simulation packages, features specific to AUGs for ocean mapping are developed. For vehicle dynamics, the next-generation hybrid autonomous underwater gliders (Hybrid-AUGs) operate with both the buoyancy engine and the thrusters to improve navigation for bathymetry mappings, e.g., line trajectory, are is implemented since because it can also describe conventional AUGs without the thrusters. The simulation results are validated with experiments while operating at 120 times faster than the real-time.

        A case of oxaliplatin-induced immune-mediated thrombocytopenia

        서성은,장문주,정소영,Richard H. Aster,Brian R. Curtis,오도연 대한혈액학회 2014 Blood Research Vol.49 No.1

Oxaliplatin is a platinum compound used in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies. It is known to evoke a drug-induced immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, which has not been reported in Korea. We describe a 53-year-old man who developed oxaliplatin-in-duced immune-mediated thrombocytopenia during chemotherapy for colon cancer. Oxaliplatin-dependent IgG platelet antibodies were detected in his serum on flow cytometry. He was treated with immunoglobulin and corticosteroids without any complications. Physicians should consider oxaliplatin-induced immune-mediated thrombocytopenia, when a sudden, isolated thrombocytopenia develops during chemo-therapy with oxaliplatin.

      • The Icebreaker Life Mission to Mars: A Search for Biomolecular Evidence for Life

        McKay, Christopher P.,Stoker, Carol R.,Glass, Brian J.,Davé,, Arwen I.,Davila, Alfonso F.,Heldmann, Jennifer L.,Marinova, Margarita M.,Fairen, Alberto G.,Quinn, Richard C.,Zacny, Kris A.,Paulsen Mary Ann Liebert 2013 Astrobiology Vol.13 No.4

The search for evidence of life on Mars is the primary motivation for the exploration of that planet. The results from previous missions, and the Phoenix mission in particular, indicate that the ice-cemented ground in the north polar plains is likely to be the most recently habitable place that is currently known on Mars. The near-surface ice likely provided adequate water activity during periods of high obliquity, ? 5 Myr ago. Carbon dioxide and nitrogen are present in the atmosphere, and nitrates may be present in the soil. Perchlorate in the soil together with iron in basaltic rock provides a possible energy source for life. Furthermore, the presence of organics must once again be considered, as the results of the Viking GCMS are now suspect given the discovery of the thermally reactive perchlorate. Ground ice may provide a way to preserve organic molecules for extended periods of time, especially organic biomarkers. The Mars Icebreaker Life mission focuses on the following science goals: (1) Search for specific biomolecules that would be conclusive evidence of life. (2) Perform a general search for organic molecules in the ground ice. (3) Determine the processes of ground ice formation and the role of liquid water. (4) Understand the mechanical properties of the martian polar ice-cemented soil. (5) Assess the recent habitability of the environment with respect to required elements to support life, energy sources, and possible toxic elements. (6) Compare the elemental composition of the northern plains with midlatitude sites. The Icebreaker Life payload has been designed around the Phoenix spacecraft and is targeted to a site near the Phoenix landing site. However, the Icebreaker payload could be supported on other Mars landing systems. Preliminary studies of the SpaceX Dragon lander show that it could support the Icebreaker payload for a landing either at the Phoenix site or at midlatitudes. Duplicate samples could be cached as a target for possible return by a Mars Sample Return mission. If the samples were shown to contain organic biomarkers, interest in returning them to Earth would be high.
