      • Self-powered deep brain stimulation via a flexible PIMNT energy harvester

        <P>Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is widely used for neural prosthetics and brain-computer interfacing. Thus far <I>in vivo</I> implantation of a battery has been a prerequisite to supply the necessary power. Although flexible energy harvesters have recently emerged as alternatives to batteries, they generate insufficient energy for operating brain stimulation. Herein, we report a high performance flexible piezoelectric energy harvester by enabling self-powered DBS in mice. This device adopts an indium modified crystalline Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIMNT) thin film on a plastic substrate to transform tiny mechanical motions to electricity. With slight bending, it generates an extremely high current reaching 0.57 mA, which satisfies the high threshold current for real-time DBS of the motor cortex and thereby could efficiently induce forearm movements in mice. The PIMNT based flexible energy harvester could open a new avenue for future <I>in vivo</I> healthcare technology using self-powered biomedical devices.</P>

        영주 사과와 상주 곶감의 지리적 표시제 특성에 대한 연구

        이 연구의 목적은 영주 사과와 상주 곶감을 대상으로 등록된 지리적 표시제와 현재 운영 중인 지리적 표시제의 특성을 확인하며, 지리적 표시제의 운영상의 문제를 분석하고 개선 방안을 도출하고자 한다. 지리적 표시제의 가장 큰 문제는 등록된 법인이 대표성과 정당성을 결여하고 있으며, 지리적 표시제 등록 제품의 생산과 품질관리에서 어려움을 겪고 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 비록 영주시와 상주시가 판매와 마케팅에 예산을 투입했음에도 불구하고 제품 판매는 크게 증가하지 않았으며 지리적 표시제의 시행에 있어서 연계성의 부족으로 분산적이며 중복되어 진행되고 있다. 이에 근거하여 중앙 정부, 지방 자치 단체, 등록 법인 등 운영 주체별로 개선 방안을 모색하였다. The purpose of this research is to identify registered Geographical Indication(GI) System and operating GI System for Youngju apple and Sangju dried persimmon, and to seek ways to improve based on the identified problems from operating GI System. We found following problems of GI System from the research. The biggest problem of GI System is that registered corporations lack representativeness and legitimacy, and it appears that they are commonly having difficulties in production and quality management of GI-registered products. Secondly, even though Youngju and Sangju have budgeted a lot for promotion and marketing of local products annually, they have failed to promote GI-registered products. Lastly, the projects are dispersive and overlap with each other due to being lack of connectivity among the projects. Based on the problems, we suggest how to improve the problems by each operating agents such and national government, local government and registered corporations.

        보수적 회계처리와 연구개발 투자의 효율성

        [연구목적] 기업의 보수적 회계처리 정책은 경영자의 무분별한 투자를 억제하여 효율적인 투자가 이루어지도록 견제하는 기능을 한다. 특히, 연구개발 활동은 기업의 성장에 필수적이지만 장기간 지속적인 투자가 요구되며, 투자의 성패를 쉽게 예측할 수 없기 때문에 보수적 회계정책 하의 경영자는 더욱 신중한 투자의사결정을 한다. 본 연구는 기업의 보수적 회계처리 성향이 기업의 연구개발 활동의 성과와 효율성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. [연구방법] 2000년부터 2017년까지 유가증권 상장기업을 대상으로 보수적 회계처리 정도가 기업의 연구개발 투자규모와 성과 및 효율성에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. [연구결과] 보수적 회계처리 성향이 높을수록 단기적인 연구개발 투자규모는 낮아지는 것으로 나타났으며, 보수적 회계처리 성향과 기업의 특허등록 성과는 유의한 관련성이 없는 것을 확인하였다. 한편 보수적 회계처리 성향이 높을수록 연구개발 투자규모 대비 특허등록 성과는 높아지는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 보수적 회계처리 성향이 높은 기업이 보유한 특허는 기업의 미래 수익성 향상과 밀접한 관련이 있으며, 특허 등록의 효과는 장기간 지속되는 것으로 나타났다. [연구의 시사점] 본 연구는 회계정보의 보수성과 기업의 연구개발 활동의 효율성과의 관계를 살펴봄으로써, 기존부터 논의해오던 회계정보의 속성과 기업의 투자의사결정의 관계를 연구개발 활동분야로 확대했다는 점에서 의의가 있다. [Purpose] We examine how accounting conservatism affects the performance and efficiency of technological corporate R&D activities. [Methodology] For this purpose, we analyze the effect of accounting conservatism on investment size, investment performance, and efficiency of R&D activities. [Findings] The result of this paper shows that firms that exhibit a higher degree of accounting conservatism are low in R&D investment. In addition, there is no significant relation between the accounting conservatism and the number of patent registration. However, conservative accounting tendency is positively related to the number of patent registration compared to the size of R&D investment. Moreover, patents held by firms with a high degree of accounting conservatism tend to improve the firm’s future cashflows, and the effect of these firms’ patent holdings is long-lasting. [Implications] Our findings suggest that the accounting conservatism improves the efficiency of R&D activities. This study has contributions that it extends the relationship between accounting attributes and a firm’s investment decision making to the field of development activities by analyzing the relationship between conservatism and the efficiency of corporate R&D activities.

      • Optical switching of near infrared light transmission in metamaterial-liquid crystal cell structure

        <P>A metamaterial-liquid crystal cell structure is fabricated with the metamaterial as one of the liquid crystal alignment layers. Nano-sized double-split ring resonator in the metamaterial accommodates two distinct resonances in the near infrared regime. By adopting an azo-nematic liquid crystal in a twisted nematic liquid crystal cell structure, a photo-isomerization process is utilized to achieve an optical switching of light transmissions between two resonances. A single device of the metamaterial-liquid crystal cell structure has a potential application in the photonic switching in optical fiber telecommunications.</P>

        여가공간으로서 청계천의 브랜드 개성이 브랜드 태도에 미치는 영향

        현대사회의 변화 속에 여가 공간 역시 그 개념과 범위가 확대되었으며, 적극적인 브랜딩과 마케팅 활동을 통한 능동적인 여가공간 활성화 방안의 논의가 필요해지고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 장소 마케팅적 관점에서 여가공간의 브랜드 개성이 브랜드 태도에 긍정적 영향을 미친다는 사실을 밝히고, 여가공간의 브랜드 인지와 개성의 중요함을 시사하고자 했다. 이를 위해 청계천을 연구 대상으로 선정하여 총 253명의 설문 조사를 기반으로 청개천의 브랜드 개성을 도출하고, 개성 척도에 따른 태도와의 관계성을 규명하였다. 결과적으로 현재 청계천은 ‘편안한’, ‘자연스러운’, ‘역동적인’, ‘세련된’, ‘유능한’ 의 총 5가지 브랜드 개성요인을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 이러한 브랜드 개성이 청계천에 대한 긍정적 브랜드 태도를 형성하는 것으로 나타났다. This research is to establish the validity of brand personality and its influence on brand behavior in this context, which will help to develop more practical strategies for the leisure space brand and suggest a broaden perspective on leisure space from a marketing point of view. In order to achieve the goal, the research identified the dimensions of brand personality of Cheonggyecheon, a well-known leisure space brand, and investigated the relationship between brand personality and brand behavior by analysing the data collected from a survey conducted on 253 university students around the capital area. The findings of the study revealed that the dimensions of leisure space brand personality have been classified as peacefulness, naturalness, excitement, sophistication and competence and that brand personality has a positive effect on the brand behavior. In addition, except "sophistication", the others among the brand personality factors have a positive effect on the brand behavior such as a perceived quality, satisfaction and intention to revisit and to recommend. Furthermore, the relative importance of brand personality on brand behavior was found to be different according to the dimensions.

      • Lack of Effects of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor Gamma Genetic Polymorphisms on Breast Cancer Risk: a Case-Control Study and Pooled Analysis

        A growing body of evidence suggests that the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma ($PPAR{\gamma}$) gene may harbor targets for the chemoprevention of breast cancer. However, it is unclear whether polymorphisms in the $PPAR{\gamma}$ gene are associated with the susceptibility of breast cancer. We performed a candidate gene association study between $PPAR{\gamma}$ polymorphisms and breast cancer and a meta-analysis on the association of breast cancer with selected $PPAR{\gamma}$ variants. Six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the $PPAR{\gamma}$ gene were analyzed among 456 breast cancer patients and 461 controls from the National Cancer Center in Korea. Association between the polymorphisms and breast cancer risk were assessed using the Cochrane-Armitage test for trend and a multivariate logistic regression model. Two SNPs, rs3856806 and rs1801282, had been previously analyzed, thus enabling us to perform pooled analyses on their associations with breast cancer susceptibility. Our findings from the candidate gene association study showed no association between the $PPAR{\gamma}$ gene polymorphisms and breast cancer risk. A meta-analysis combining existing studies and our current study also refuted an association of the $PPAR{\gamma}$ gene with breast cancer. Our findings suggest that the $PPAR{\gamma}$ gene may not harbor variants that alter breast cancer susceptibility, although a moderate sample size might have precluded a decisive conclusion.

        Attribution to Heterogeneous Risk Factors for Breast Cancer Subtypes Based on Hormone Receptor and Human Epidermal Growth Factor 2 Receptor Expression in Korea

        <▼1><P>Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We conducted a heterogeneous risk assessment of breast cancer based on the hormone receptor (HR) and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) calculating the risks and population-based attributable fractions (PAFs) for modifiable and nonmodifiable factors.</P><P>Using matched case–control study design from the Seoul Breast Cancer Study and the national prevalence of exposure, the risks and PAFs for modifiable and nonmodifiable factors were estimated for total breast cancers and subtypes.</P><P>The attribution to modifiable factors was different for each subtype (luminal A, PAF = 61.4% [95% confidence interval, CI = 54.3%–69.8%]; luminal B, 21.4% [95% CI = 18.6–24.9%]; HER2-overexpression, 59.4% [95% CI = 47.8%–74.3%], and triple negative tumors [TNs], 27.1% [95% CI = 22.9%–32.4%)], and the attribution to the modifiable factors for the luminal A and HER2-overexpression subtypes was higher than that of the luminal B and TN subtypes (<I>P</I> heterogeneity ≤ 0.001). The contribution of modifiable reproductive factors to luminal A type in premenopausal women was higher than that of the other subtypes (18.2% for luminal A; 3.1%, 8.1%, and −3.1% for luminal B, HER2-overexpression, and TN subtypes, respectively; <I>P</I> heterogeneity ≤ 0.001). Physical activity had the highest impact preventing 32.6% of luminal A, 14.5% of luminal B, 38.0% of HER2-overexpression, and 26.9% of TN subtypes (<I>P</I> heterogeneity = 0.014). Total reproductive factors were also heterogeneously attributed to each breast cancer subtype (luminal A, 65.4%; luminal B, 24.1%; HER2-overexpression, 57.9%, and TN subtypes, −3.1%; <I>P</I> heterogeneity ≤ 0.001).</P><P>Each pathological subtype of breast cancer by HRs and HER2 status may be associated with heterogeneous risk factors and their attributable risk, suggesting a different etiology. The luminal B and TN subtypes seemed to be less preventable despite intervention for alleged risk factors, even though physical activity had a high preventable potential against breast cancer.</P></▼2>

        준설 물량 산출을 위한 지반정보 3차원 가시화 프로그램 비교 평가

        국내 및 해외에서 진행되고 있는 간척사업은 대규모 매립재가 필요하나 육상에서 얻을 수 있는 매립재는 한정되어 있어 해상준설토를 활용하기 위한 지반 정보화 관련 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 이러한 연구의 일환으로 준설지역 지반조사 자료의 디지털 공간 정보화를 통해 신뢰도가 고려된 3차원 준설 물량의 자동 산출이 가능한 GIS 기반의 준설 매립지반 DB 구축 및 3차원 준설 매립 정보화 프로그램을 개발하였다. 현장에서 준설된 물량과의 비교 검증에 앞서 본 연구에서는 수집된 새만금 지역의 군장항 인근 지반조사 자료를 바탕으로 개발된 프로그램과 3차원 준설 매립 정보화 상용 프로그램으로 지반정보의 3차원 가시화를 수행하였다. 이를 토대로 가시화 수준, 각 지층의 단면 및 심도, 정량적 준설 물량 산출 결과를 비교하여 개발 프로그램에 대한 적정성을 평가하였으며, 평가결과 각각 산출된 준설 물량은 일치하는 것으로 나타났다. There are many reclamation projects domestically and internationally which requires large quantity of reclaimable materials. To provide enough reclaimable soils which are limited in land, there have been various research focusing on the dredged soils in the marine environments. As a part of this research, a GIS based 3D dredging reclamation visualization program was developed for the volume estimation of dredged soils in 2015. The developed program is based on the digitized spatial information of the site investigation data with a consideration of the reliability of the data. Prior to the validation with the comparisons with the actual dredged volume measurement data, the developed program was compared with the commercial 3D visualization program with 3D visualized results from the test site near the Gunjang harbor. The validation of the developed program was performed in terms of the degree of visualized precision, the sectional and profiling of soil layers and the dredged volume estimation results. Based on the comparisons, both commercial and developed program show similar dredged volume with minor discrepancies in soil layers.
