Multi-chip module technology is rapidly changing the way the EDA industry looks at traditional design processes. It is becoming increasingly evident that CAD systems offering point technology solutions are not adequate for today's advanced packaging. Substantial gains in product reliability and cost can only be accomplished with the development of design systems that not only provide high performance tools, but integrate process improvements into their design architectures. For example, $quot;constraint-driven$quot; design systems allow design teams to establish technology constraints/rules upfront during the logic design to automatically guide the physical layout process. Design systems incorporating $quot;in-process analysis$quot; provide electrical, thermal and reliability analysis tools to identify design integrity issues earlier in the design process. Post-layout analysis capabilities minimize layout-induced errors and reduce costs by eliminating expensive hardware prototypes. The continued growth in the multi-chip module market will not only spawn new developments in CAD, but encourage a much closer relationship between CAD vendors and MCM fabricators as well. The overall expense of MCM technology and the problems associated with material selection will create many new challenges for both CAD vendors and MCM fabricators alike as smaller electronics manufacturers look to MCM fabrication houses to provide both design and fabrication of MCMs.
