Thus paper draws on Singapore's experience in language and policy planning as the country's linguistic legacy and rapidly changing linguistic directions raises interesting set of complexities. Although there are considerable differences in the 'linguistic' and 'societal' approaches to language planning, they are not mutually exclusive of each other. The distinction between the two approaches will be discussed and examined Thus paper, shows how both the macro and micro linguistics approaches to language planning are practiced in Singapore I will show that the macro level language planning is motivated primarily by tasks of national consolidation and economic development Following a policy of multi lingualism and bilingnalim the Singapore government intervenes proactively in solving language related problems. One such perceived language problem that has been of great concern is the in asing n se of Singapore colloquial English amongst the populace. My argument is that the Speak Good Ehg(ish campaign launched recently illustrates a micro linguistically driven approach to language planning. Thus, the macro and micro linguistics approaches axe seen operating simultaneously. In my discussion I will demonstrate that they axe both equally dtiven by social, political and ideological factors.

Kinetics of photoelectric response signals were measured on samples containing preoriented bacteriorhodopsin(bR570) and anaesthetic treated bacteriorhodopsin(bR480). During the formation of the intermediate K as an optical absorption, the corresponding negative (with respect to the direction of the proton pump) components(B1) of the photoelectric response signals of bR570 and bR480 are well resolved with time contants 1.30μs and 0.86μs, respectively. It means that the conformational change of bR480 occurred in the retinyl chromophore of the protein before the earlist stage of the photochemical cycle.
Applying the double knock technique to control Conyza bonariensis

Sequential applications of glyphosate followed by another postemergent herbicide, known as the "double knock" technique, were trialled for their effectiveness in controlling Conyza bonariensis. Combinations of glyphosate with and without 2,4-D followed by paraquat plus diquat, paraquat, or 2,4-D were tested at a range of follow-up application times in two field and two pot experiments. The results showed that paraquat plus diquat or paraquat following glyphosate or glyphosate plus 2,4-D provided highly effective weed control compared to glyphosate alone. The optimum timing for follow-up applications of paraquat or paraquat plus diquat was between 5 and 7 days after the initial glyphosate application. Combined applications of glyphosate and 2,4-D, compared to split applications, were not significantly different. However, following glyphosate application with 2,4-D >1 day later considerably reduced the level of control. This study showed that the double knock technique is highly effective in controlling C. bonariensis and is rapidly becoming an important tool in the management of this problem weed.
HYDRATION DEPENDENCE OF DRIED ORIENTED PURPLE MEMBRANE FILMS ACTIVITY

Dry orderly oriented purple membrane from Halobacterium halobium was obtained by a new technique of preparation. This oriented purple membrane film was very stable, nearly permanently, and showed long term reproducibility with respect to its photochemical behavior. In addition, we have investigated the photooptical properties in terms of the M$_{412}$ intermediate of the bacteriorhodopsin photocycle with respect to the humidity of the film. The relative optical density, i.e. its apparent concentration of the M$_{412}$ intermediate was decreased with the humidity increase as a function of the intensity of the exciting flash within our experimental range. It is suggested that the bound water molecules play an important role in the structure of the bacteriorhodopsin.
Morphological variations and accessory ossicles in the peroneal and tibialis muscles

This study describes five bilateral anatomical variations in the feet of a 97-year-old male cadaver. Following routine dissection, all variants were measured and documented. Three accessory tendons and two accessory ossicles were identified. Bilateral accessory tendons were present from the tibialis anterior (type II), peroneus tertius (type III), and peroneus brevis muscles. Accessory tendon length was 36–104 mm and width was 1–3 mm each inserting more distally then the main tendon. Accessory ossicles were identified as an accessory navicular and os peroneum, respectively. Individually, each variation has varying prevalence rates in the literature, but to date, no known studies have been published describing the combined presence of all five bilateral variations. The acknowledgement of multi-variant cases such as this one may be helpful in the clinical setting, particularly for patients with pathology or for those undergoing foot and ankle surgery.

The climate effects of increasing ocean albedo: an idealized representation of solar geoengineering

<P>Abstract. Geoengineering, or climate intervention, describes methods of deliberately altering the climate system to offset anthropogenic climate change. As an idealized representation of near-surface solar geoengineering over the ocean, such as marine cloud brightening, this paper discusses experiment G1ocean-albedo of the Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP), involving an abrupt quadrupling of the CO2 concentration and an instantaneous increase in ocean albedo to maintain approximate net top-of-atmosphere radiative flux balance. A total of 11 Earth system models are relatively consistent in their temperature, radiative flux, and hydrological cycle responses to this experiment. Due to the imposed forcing, air over the land surface warms by a model average of 1.14 K, while air over most of the ocean cools. Some parts of the near-surface air temperature over ocean warm due to heat transport from land to ocean. These changes generally resolve within a few years, indicating that changes in ocean heat content play at most a small role in the warming over the oceans. The hydrological cycle response is a general slowing down, with high heterogeneity in the response, particularly in the tropics. While idealized, these results have important implications for marine cloud brightening, or other methods of geoengineering involving spatially heterogeneous forcing, or other general forcings with a strong land-ocean contrast. It also reinforces previous findings that keeping top-of-atmosphere net radiative flux constant is not sufficient for preventing changes in global mean temperature. </P>
