The Coral Red Kukri Snake Oligodon kheriensis is a rare and poorly known species; only a few specimenshave been recorded so far since its first discovery in 1936. The species is endemic to the Himalayan tracts, previously reported only from northern India and Nepal. Here, we record and describe O. kheriensis forthe first time from Bangladesh as a third country report, thereby extending its distribution range. We alsoelaborate on details of its morphometry along with a discussion on its ecological niche, global distribution, intraspecific geomorphological variation, current conservation aspects, and possible conservationstrategies.

In this study, to determine the most effective alloy for shielding against gamma-rays, the gamma-rayshielding parameters of six types of cerrobend alloys have been investigated. Gamma-ray interactionwith the cerrobend alloys has been discussed mainly in terms of total mass attenuation coefficient (mt),half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer (TVL), effective atomic number (Zeff), and effective electrondensity (Neff). These parameters have been calculated by theoretical approach using the ParShield programin a photon energy range between 0.1 MeV and 100 GeV. The dependence of these parameters onthe incident photon energy and chemical composition of the cerrobend alloys has been studied.

Shin Kori Unit 3 is a new pressurized water reactor in Advanced Power Reactor 1400, which was developed by Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. and commenced commercial operation in December 2016. We calculated the radionuclide concentrations and related radiation doses at the early stage of accidents under the assumption of hypothetical severe nuclear accidents in Shin Kori Unit 3. In this study, the radiological source terms of the accident scenarios were evaluated using the radiological assessment system for consequence analysis code, which has been used as a regulatory software tool for emergency response applications developed by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In general, the atmospheric transport, dispersion, and deposition processes of radioactive materials can be simulated by the Gaussian model using a straight-line trajectory Gaussian plume model for short distances and a Lagrangian Gaussian puff model for long distances. The most dangerous scenarios were observed during winter when we considered two accident scenarios, namely, long-term station blackout (LTSBO) and loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA), based on the reactor conditions and seasonal effects. The total effective dose equivalent values for LTSBO and LOCA were estimated to be 14 and 0.08 mSv, respectively, in the precautionary action zone of 5 km in two days after the accident. According to Korean regulations on urgent public protective actions, the criteria are 10 mSv in two days for indoor sheltering and 50 mSv in one week for public evacuation. In the LTSBO case, we found that immediate public protective measures were required. Appropriate decisions must be made by the off-site emergency management center under the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission in Korea.

The discovery of effective therapeutic agents against neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) remains challenging. Neurotoxicity, inflammations, and oxidative stress are associating factors of NDDs. NaB is a short-chain fatty acid that reportedly protects cancer, inflammation, obesity and so on. We have investigated the neuroprotective effects of NaB in TNF-α-induced SH-SY5Y cells. The expression of inflammatory mediators, including iNOS, COX-2, MAPK and the apoptotic regulators, including P-53, BAX Protein, and caspase-3 were analyzed by western blot analysis. The apoptotic regulatory gene Bcl-2 and BAX translocation were also investigated. Our results showed that NaB attenuated cell death and inhibited the NO production, iNOS and COX-2 expressions in TNF-α-induced SH-SY5Y cells. NaB notably ameliorated apoptotic regulatory proteins p-53, Caspase cascades, and reversed phosphorylation of MAPKs. NaB ameliorated Glucocorticoid receptor and NLRP3 expressions. NaB also suppressed the BAX activation and modulated Nrf-2, HO-1 and MnSOD expression. Altogether, our results suggest that sodium butyrate has potential therapeutic effects against NDDs.

Andrographolide (AG) is a bioactive natural occurring compound found in a medicinal plant called Andrographis paniculata. AG is highly bioavailable and well-known for anti-cancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and many other bio-functional activities. Hence, its antiinflammatory effects in keratinocytes have not been studied. The skin inflammations and disruptions on skin permeabilities by cell-mediated inflammatory cytokines lead to chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as allergies, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and so on. We have investigated cell viability for evaluating cytotoxicity. Moreover, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1B, IL-6, and prostaglandin E2 levels have been measured by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay. The effect of AG on nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB) signaling pathways and inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 expressions have been carried out by western blot analysis. c-Fos presence has been elucidated by confocal microscopy. Furthermore, the skin barrier functions of AG have been investigated in HaCaT cell. AG significantly restored skin barrier functions and reduced inflammation in LPS or TNF-α/IFN-γ stimulated HaCaT cells by preventing NF- κB, c-Fos activation, and modulating filaggrin, involucrin, and loricrin expressions. These results potentially proved that AG could be used as a therapeutic agent against inflammatory skin diseases.
