        The most important thing in sludge treatment is to reduce the volume of sludge. To achieve this purpose, sludge is usually dewatered after conditioning by polymer. For efficient dewatering and its economic operation, polymer should be dosed properly. Therefore, the possibility of filtrate viscosity as a tool for the optimization of polymer dose in waterworks sludge conditioning was estimated in this study. In conclusion, it may be effective and accuracy to use filtrate viscosity as a control parameter to determine the optimum dose of polymer in sludge dewatering. Especially in case of cationic polymer conditioning, filtrate viscosity can be used effectively for this purpose. However, In contrast filtrate viscosity can not be utilized as a control tool if nonionic or anionic polymer were dosed.

        정수슬러지의 유동특성을 이용한 폴리머 적정주입량 결정

        The major objective of sludge treatment is to reduce the volume of sludge. To achieve this purpose, sludge is usually dewatered after conditioning by polymer. For the efficient and economic operation of dewatering facility, polymer should be dosed properly. Therefore, in this study, the Theological characteristics of waterworks sludge was investigated to evaluate the potential of control parameter in polymer dose assessment. In conclusion, it might be effective and accurate to use filtrate viscosity as a control parameter to determine the optimum dose of polymer in sludge dewatering. As a result of this study, in case of cationic polymer, it could be used effectively for this purpose regardless of the properly of waterworks sludge.

        [ $\beta$ ]-Secretase (BACE1) Inhibitors from Pomegranate (Punica granatum) Husk

        In the course of screening for anti-dementia agents from natural products, two $\beta$-secretase (BACE1) inhibitors were isolated from the husk of pomegranate (Punica granatum) by activity-guided purification. They were identified as ellagic acid and punicalagin with $IC_{50}$ values of 3.9 $\times$$10^{-6}$ and 4.1$\times$$10^{-7}$ M and Ki values of 2.4$\times$$10^{-5}$and 5.9$\times$$10^{-7}$ M, respectively. The compounds were non-competitive inhibitors with a substrate in the Dixon plot. Ellagic acid and punicalagin were less inhibitory to $\alpha$-secretase (TACE) and other serine proteases such as chymotrypsin, trypsin, and elastase, thus indicating that they were relatively specific inhibitors of BACE1.

      • 〈李生窺墻傳〉의 寓意性 考察

        Isaenggyujangjeon(李生窺墻傳) is regarded as a work expressing allegorically the campaign of King Danjong(端宗)'s restoration. This is, also, a work adding two accidents centering around Honggeonjeok(紅巾賊)'s rebellion. It can be seen that this is composed of three stories, because another accident is added to this work in the form of an inserted poem(揷入詩). This paper is to examine the allegory of Isaenggyujangjeon centering around its backgrounds, characters, accidents, inserted poems, and so on. First, the backgrounds of this novel are Seonjuk-ri(善竹理), the Naktagyo(낙타교), Ulju(蔚州), and Bokju(復州). Seonjuk-ri, the Naktagyo, and Seonggyungwan(成均館) in Songdo(松島) are located in the same places as present, so it serves to raise the reality of historical accidents. Isaeng(李生)'s going down to Ulju, the family origin of Kim Siseop(金時習)'s mother Mrs. Jang(張氏) being from Ulju, and his mother's many relatives there - judging from these, Ulju is closely related to Kim Si -seop. Second, the characters of this novel are Isaeng, his parents, Choerang(崔?), and Sibit(시비). Of these Isaeng lives near the Naktagyo, and under his parents' order, he goes down to Ulju without a word to Choerang, and is also a passive and mean man who abandons his family and escapes alone in Honggeonjeok's rebellion. Kim Si-seop looks at Sayuksin(死六臣) tortured after the failure of King Danjong‘s restoration, but takes no measures to help them and wanders the country for the pain. It proves Isaeng to be Kim Si-seop. Choerang goes down to Bokju and is killed by thieves there. His parent before Honggeonjeok's rebellion is regarded as King Sejo(世祖) except whom King Danjong has no one to tum to, and his parents after the rebellion are able to be seen as faithful subjects as Sayuksin. Finally, Sibi serves as a foil to the atmosphere of the novel. Third, the happenings of the novel are Honggeonjeok's rebellion, and Choerang's and her parents' death. The former means that King Danjong is expelled from his throne and goes down to Yeongwol(寧越) owing to the failure of his restoration. The latter reveals allegorically the death of King Danjong's and his six royal subjects'(死六臣) by King Sejo's followers. And Isaeng's burying Choerang s parents at Ogwansan(五冠山) is compared with Kim Si-seop's burying five corpses at Noryangjin(鷺梁津). Fourth, inserted poems involve the fear caused by the failure of King Danjong's restoration and the advice of watching villainous subjects like a parrot. Six poems which Choerang gives to Isaeng show King Danjong's exile to Yeongwol by the failure of his restoration and their betrayal caused by the trial of his faithful subjects. They are written in "Yeongangcheopjangdo"(烟江疊壯圖) and "Yuhwanggomokdo"(幽皇古木圖). Poems compared to four seasons reveal their meanings clearly when each is connected with one another. A poem in the first picture scroll shows royal subjects arrested by King Sejo's followers owing to the failure of King Danjong's restoration, and a writer's helpless grief. A poem in the second picture scroll reveals Geumseongdaegun(錦城大君)'s plotting a rebellion, and he is symbolized as a virgin of the south. A poem in the third picture scroll presents Geumseongdaegun's death and the people's bitterness due to the exposure of his plotting a rebellion. Finally, a poem in the fourth picture scroll allegorises a story about King Danjong looking at crows in crowds in the night sky and dropping tears, foreseeing his death. Finally, weeping willow trees surrounding Choerang's house wall suggest Suyang(King Sejo)'s followers, and Choerang living there represents metaphorically King Danjong who demises his throne and is confined in Changdeokgung(昌德宮). In conclusion, Isaenggyujangjeon is able to be seen as a work expressing allegorically from the failure of King Danjong's restoration to his death.

        In the field of automobile interior industry, the coloring and lightening of the instrument panel(I/P) has been focused on for the purposed of value added styling and upgrading. In this application, the powder type electroluminescence(EL) system has a great possibility to be applied in the integrated instrument panel. The EL film is composed of the inorganic phosphor and dielectric layer printed on the top of Indium Tin Oxide(ITO) and Silver paste layer. Thus EL film was made of a printed on silk screen method. Thermoplastic olefins(TPO) sheet was developed to satisfy the applied for EL back lighting system. And I/P skin was developed to satisfy the required mechanical properties and reliability. I/P Polyurethane(PU) foaming was developed to satisfy the applied for EL film. The mechanical and processing properties of materials to satisfy the required of I/P assembly at reliability. In this study, automobile interior was developed the first time applied the EL back lighting system for instrument panel.

      • Griseofulvin 投輿로 生成된 肝細胞 Mallory body의 微細形態學的 硏究

        Mallory body 의 미세구조와 그 본래를 알아보고자 2.5%의 griseofulvin 이 혼합된 사료를 3개월 이상 생쥐에 투여하여 간세포에서 형성된 Mallory body 를 광학현미경 및 전자현미경으로 관찰하였으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 광학현미경적으로 다수의 간세포내에서 호산성, 미세과립상의 무정형 봉입체가 관찰되었고 Laqeuer 방법에 의한 alcoholic hyalin 염색에 양성으로 밝은 적색을 나타내었다. 전자현미경적으로는 세포질내에 증식된 tonofilament로 둘러싸인 미세관상의 집합체와 ER 및 mitochondria의 변성물 및 공포등의 세포 구성성분이 주위에 lysosome을 동반하여 나타났으며 또한 ER과 유사한 막성구조물의 집단도 관찰되었다. 이들 중 후자의 막성구조물은 인지질 염색에 양성의 염색성을 보였다. 이상의 소견으로 보아 Mallory body는 tonofilament 의 비정상적인 대사과정에서 형성되거나 또는 변성된 세포구조물에 lysosome이 결합된 autophagosome의 일종이라 생각되며 이들 중 막성구조물은 인지질을 함유하고 있는 것으로 사료된다. To inverstigate morphogenesis and nature of Mallory bodies which are present in various liver diseases, ICR mice were administered griseofulvin at 2.5% dietary concentration over three months. The studis included light, electron microscopy and cytochemical electron microscoy: tricomplex stain for identification of phospholipid. The results were as follows. On light microscopic examination, irregularly shaped, homogeneous, granular, eosinophilic bodies were present in the cytoplasm, and which showed bright red color on Laqueur's method for identification of alcoholic hyalin. On electron microscopic examination, there were collections of tubular structures surrounded by tonofilaments, and amorphous collections of frangmented ER, degraded mitochondria, and vacuoles, accompaneid with adjacent lysosomes. The membranous stuructures of them were positive on phospholipid stain. From the above results, it is considered that Mallory bodies are a kind of arrested autophagosomes made of abnormal metabolic products with degraded cellular organelles, or are made from abnomal products of tonofilament metabolism.

        Isolation and Characterization of Proteoglycan Derived From Human Placenta and its Biological Activities

        Chondroitin sulfates proteoglycans were isolated from human placenta. For the identification of enzymatic digestion products of isolated proteoglycan, strong anion exchange-high performance liquid chromatography (SAX-HPLC) was performed. By the action of chondroitin ABC and chondroitin B lyase, three unsaturated disaccharides 2-acetamide-2-deoxy-3-O-($\beta$-D-gluco-4-enepyranosyluronic acid)-D-galactose ($\delta$Di-OS), 2-acetamide-2-deoxy-3-O-($\beta$-D-gluco-4-enepyranosyluronic acid)-6-O-su lfo-D-galactose ($\delta$Di-6S) and 2-acetamide-2-deoxy-3-O-($\beta$-D-gl uco-4-enepyranosyluronic acid)-4-O-sulfo-D-galactose ($\delta$Di-4S) were produced from the human placenta proteoglycan. The anticoagulant activity of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan was evaluated by activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) assay and thrombin time (TT) assay. The clotting times of aPTT and TT were increased from 72 to 144 sec and 19 to 27 sec, respectively. The Immune-modulating activity of chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan was examined by cell proliferation assay and these results suggest that it may play a role in suppression of the function of immune-related cells.

      • 유방 침윤성 관암종의 CD44 발현도와 예후 인자들과의 관계

        CD44 is a family of transmembrane glycoproteins involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions. Expression of CD44 isoforms (splice variants) has been shown to be associated with poor prognosis in several human cancers. We evaluated the expression patterns of the CD44 isoform (CD 44 splice variant v6) in infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast by immunohistochemical and RT-PCR method. Paraffin embedded blocks from seventy-five cases of mastectomized samples were analyzed immunohistochemically using monoclonoal antibody against CD44v6. CD44v6 was detected in fifty-seven cases(76%) of the tumor samples. Adjacent normal myoepithelial cells and ductal epithelial cells revealed focal positive reaction to CD44v6. Thirty-two cases (80.0%) withe lymph nodal metastasis revealed overexpression of CD44v6 monoclonal antibody, but twenty-five cases (71.4%) without nodal metastasis also showed positive reaction to CD44v6 monclonal antibody, and there is no statisticallly significant value. Other prognostic factors of infiltrating ductal carcinoma, such as tumor size, histologic grade and hormonal receptors did not show any significant correlation with CD44v6 expression. The RT-PCR studies for 9 cases of infiltrating ductal carcinoma showed the same band patterns both in the normal and tumor tissues. From the above results, it is concluded that the expression of CD44v6 is not a valuable prognostic marker of infiltrating ductal carcinoma of breast.(Korean J Pathol 1997;31: 635~643)
