In the search for an idiosyncratic improvisatory language of solo flute performance, it is sometimes necessary to move beyond the scope of traditional and extended techniques into the world of instrument-extension through computers. To this end, Alice Bennett’s creative work leads to the exploration of new electroacoustic techniques, searching for ways to expand the available sonic palette. This paper documents an electronically-extended flute performance utilising Vincent Giles’ Spectral Domain Microsound Amplification Software (SDMAS) in real-time. The SDMAS amplifies soft sounds relative to loud, by real-time input, shifting the partials by amplitude around an amplitude-based pivot point. The result is that these otherwise-inaudible partials increased to audibility alongside the higher amplitude partials, drastically altering the perceived timbre of the instrument or instruments being treated. This allows the performer/composer to not only discover, but to exploit a greater range of timbres than are available to a purely acoustic instrument. These explorations lead to a sonically enriched and idiosyncratic improvisatory language based on this hyper-instrument configuration.

The use of Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) accelerometers in geotechnical instrumentation is relatively new but on the rise. This paper describes a new MEMS-based system for in situ deformation and vibration monitoring. The system has been developed in an effort to combine recent advances in the miniaturization of sensors and electronics with an established wireless infrastructure for on-line geotechnical monitoring. The concept is based on triaxial MEMS accelerometer measurements of static acceleration (angles relative to gravity) and dynamic accelerations. The dynamic acceleration sensitivity range provides signals proportional to vibration during earthquakes or construction activities. This MEMS-based in-place inclinometer system utilizes the measurements to obtain three-dimensional (3D) ground acceleration and permanent deformation profiles up to a depth of one hundred meters. Each sensor array or group of arrays can be connected to a wireless earth station to enable real-time monitoring as well as remote sensor configuration. This paper provides a technical assessment of MEMS-based in-place inclinometer systems for geotechnical instrumentation applications by reviewing the sensor characteristics and providing small- and full-scale laboratory calibration tests. A description and validation of recorded field data from an instrumented unstable slope in California is also presented.
MASSES AND ORBITAL CONSTRAINTS FOR THE OGLE-2006-BLG-109Lb,c JUPITER/SATURN ANALOG PLANETARY SYSTEM

<P>We present a new analysis of the Jupiter+Saturn analog system, OGLE-2006-BLG-109Lb,c, which was the first double planet system discovered with the gravitational microlensing method. This is the only multi-planet system discovered by any method with measured masses for the star and both planets. In addition to the signatures of two planets, this event also exhibits a microlensing parallax signature and finite source effects that provide a direct measure of the masses of the star and planets, and the expected brightness of the host star is confirmed by Keck AO imaging, yielding masses of M(*) = 0.51(-0.04)(+0.05) M(circle dot), M(b) = 231 +/- 19 M(circle plus), and M(c) = 86 +/- 7 M(circle plus). The Saturn-analog planet in this system had a planetary light-curve deviation that lasted for 11 days, and as a result, the effects of the orbital motion are visible in the microlensing light curve. We find that four of the six orbital parameters are tightly constrained and that a fifth parameter, the orbital acceleration, is weakly constrained. No orbital information is available for the Jupiter-analog planet, but its presence helps to constrain the orbital motion of the Saturn-analog planet. Assuming co-planar orbits, we find an orbital eccentricity of epsilon = 0.15(-0.10) (+0.17) and an orbital inclination of i = 64 degrees(+ 4 degrees)(-7 degrees) The 95% confidence level lower limit on the inclination of i > 49 degrees implies that this planetary system can be detected and studied via radial velocity measurements using a telescope of greater than or similar to 30 m aperture.</P>

인도 뉴 델리에서 개최된 세계 기독교 협의회(W.C.C.) 제4차 대회(1961년 11월)의 중요한 의의는 이 대회의 성격이 어떠하였는가에도 나타나 있지만 또 이 대회가 실제로 결의하여 보여준 행동에서도 잘 발견된다. 이 대회에서는 교회가 당면하고 있는 커다란 종교적이며 윤리적인 사상면과 교회정책상의 제 문제에 대해서 거의 새로운 변동을 가져오지는 않았다. 그러나 이번대회에서 이룩된 결정으로 이 세계 협의회는 앞으로 근본적인 변화를 가져오게 될 것이다.
Wireless sensor networks for underground railway applications: case studies in Prague and London

There is increasing interest in using structural monitoring as a cost effective way of managing risks once an area of concern has been identified. However, it is challenging to deploy an effective, reliable, large-scale, long-term and real-time monitoring system in an underground railway environment (subway / metro). The use of wireless sensor technology allows for rapid deployment of a monitoring scheme and thus has significant potential benefits as the time available for access is often severely limited. This paper identifies the critical factors that should be considered in the design of a wireless sensor network, including the availability of electrical power and communications networks. Various issues facing underground deployment of wireless sensor networks will also be discussed, in particular for two field case studies involving networks deployed for structural monitoring in the Prague Metro and the London Underground. The paper describes the network design, the radio propagation, the network topology as well as the practical issues involved in deploying a wireless sensor network in these two tunnels.

While prior research has highlighted the use of product purchases to build one’s self-confidence or has highlighted the ability of a celebrity endorsement to increase consumers’ confidence in their purchase of the product or the quality of the endorsed product, work that delineates the specific types of confidence that celebrity endorsement may provide consumers is scant. Leveraging the meaning transfer theory, this paper employs qualitative research design and draws on grounded theory methodology to examine consumers’ use of celebrity meanings through the consumption of celebrity-endorsed products to build confidence. The paper provides new insight into consumers’ use of celebrity meanings in constructing the self. Three forms of celebrity-evoked self-confidence emerged: validation, performance ability, and social insurance. While the first two are used to strengthen selfconfidence, the third confidence is a form of feeling protected or safe. These findings add novel insight into consumers’ uses of celebrity-endorsed products.

The Feeling of Going: Judgments of Learning(JOLs) for Maps and Directions

Spatial metamemory is an unexplored topic, despite our knowledge of spatial me-mory. In the current study, Judgments of learning (JOLs) for maps (Experiment 1) and verbal directions (Experiment 2) were examined. The tasks were chosen to mirror real-world spatial learning situations. In both studies, participants studied for 60 seconds a map or a set of directions from one place to another. Following study, participants assessed JOLs on a 0 to 100 scale immediately after the map (Experiment 1) or the directions (Experiment 2) were removed. Participants then wrote or drew the directions from one place to another. These JOLs are immediate JOLs (Nelson & Dunlosky,1991), which tend to be low in accuracy (.3 to .4). For both maps and directions, the gamma correlations were above .8. Calibration of the magnitude of the judgments also closely matched performance. Various explana-tions for the strong gamma correlations are given.
