A Cross-Cultural Comparison of Fears in Turkish, South Korean, and American Students

Fears of children from Turkey, South Korea, and the United States were compared for the first time using translated versions of the American Fear Survey Schedule (FSSC-AM; Burnham, 2005). Although several versions of the Fear Survey Schedule for Children (FSSC; Scherer & Nakamura, 1968) have been used since it was introduced, no published studies have reported the fears of South Korean children, and only a limited number of Turkish studies have used the FSSC (Serim, 2010; Serim-Yıldız & Erdur-Baker, 2013; Serim-Yıldız, Erdur-Baker, & Bugay, 2013). This exploratory study presents data from middle and high school students from two countries rarely studied in the fear literature. Fears of school-aged children in Asia and Eurasia are presented and compared to an American sample. The sample included 637 middle and high school students, and significant differences were found across age, gender, and country, and in most common fears. Implications for counseling and future research will be discussed.
Streaming potential and groundwater contamination

Measurements of streaming potential can provide a means for the detection and quantification of contaminants in groundwater prior to remediation. However, laboratory determinations of specific electrolyte properties are required for an adequate analysis of the hydraulic gradient in complex situations. Data obtained for the King River in Tasmania confirm a linear relationship linking streaming potential data and hydraulic gradients. Laboratory samples at low concentration (0.001M KCl) indicate values in the range 20-80 mV/cm of water pressure, while for higher concentrations (0.01M KCl) values are less than 25 mV/cm. Similar ion concentrations are observed in the King River, consistent with field correlations indicating values for streaming potential close to 15 mV/cm. In-situ fluid samples are required for more detailed analysis of local anomalies that may be associated with variations in recharge and migration of contaminants.
Genetic evidence of illegal trade in protected whales links Japan with the US and South Korea

<P>We report on genetic identification of ‘whale meat’ purchased in sushi restaurants in Los Angeles, CA (USA) in October 2009 and in Seoul, South Korea in June and September 2009. Phylogenetic analyses of mtDNA cytochrome <I>b</I> sequences confirmed that the products included three species of whale currently killed in the controversial scientific whaling programme of Japan, but which are protected from international trade: the fin, sei and Antarctic minke. The DNA profile of the fin whale sold in Seoul established a match to products purchased previously in Japan in September 2007, confirming unauthorized trade between these two countries. Following species identification, these products were handed over to the appropriate national or local authorities for further investigation. The illegal trade of products from protected species of whales, presumably taken under a national permit for scientific research, is a timely reminder of the need for independent, transparent and robust monitoring of any future whaling.</P>

Monofunctional biosynthetic peptidoglycan transglycosylase (MBPT) catalyzes the formation of the glycan chain in bacterial cell walls from peptidoglycan subunits: N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and acetylmuramic acid (NAM). Bifunctional glycosyltransferases such as the penicillin binding protein (PBP) have peptidoglycan glycosyltransferase (PGT) on their C terminal end which links together the peptidoglycan subunits while transpeptidase (TP) on the N terminal end cross-links the peptide moieties on the NAM monosaccharide of the peptide subunits to create the bacterial cell wall. The singular function of MBPT resembles the C terminal end of PBP as it too contains and utilizes a similar PGT domain. In this article we analyzed the infectious and non infectious protein sequences of MBPT from 31 different strains of bacteria using a variety of bioinformatic tools. Motif analysis, dot-plot comparison, and phylogenetic analysis identified a number of significant differences between infectious and non-infectious protein sequences. In this paper we have made an attempt to explain, analyze and discuss these differences from an evolutionary perspective. The results of our sequence analysis may open the door for utilizing MBPT as a new target to fight a variety of infectious bacteria.

조선 시대 중기에 한국은 도교의 내단에 흥미가 고조되는 것을 체험했고, 16~17세기 중에 많은 유교 학자들이 받아들인 호흡법과 심신 수련은 이미 초기 중국에서 고안된 심신 수련자의 신체에서 나오는 기의 순환과 양·질을 강화하는 것이었다. 그러나 18~19세기의 한국인들은 이러한 양생법에 대해서 흥미를 잃게 되지만, 20세기의 지난 반세기 동안에 내단을 이채롭게 다시 부흥시킨 것이다. 여러 가지 새로운 조직체들이 단전호흡과 도인체조를 서울과 다른 도시에서 증진 시키고 있다. 국선도가 1970년에 처음으로 시행되었고 이것은 1984년 새로운 내단으로 되기까지 대중들의 호응을 받지 못했다. 그러나 이러한 심신수련이 새 조직인 단(丹)세계에 의해서 멀리 번창되어 나갔으며 이 조직의 지도자인 이 승훈에 의해서 흥미롭게 다시 소생되었다. 단 세계는 한국에서 무려 360개가 넘는 선원이 있으며 수련자들에 의해서 유럽과 북미에서도 선원이 시작되었다. 이것은 근본적으로 중국의 도교 보다는 고조선 시대 단군에 의해서 고안된 것이라고 말한다. 단 세계는 도교적 양생법 수련보다 한국의 전통적인 것에 대한 자부심을 가지고 장려되고 있다.
