CO2 separation from biogas using PEI-modified crosslinked polymethacrylate resin sorbent

Olusola Johnson,Babu Joseph,John N. Kuhn 한국공업화학회 2021 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.103 No.-

The separation of CO2 from biogas to achieve vehicle/pipeline grade methane is an expensive step. Recently, PEI (polyethyleneimine) impregnated resins have been proposed and evaluated for CO2 separationfrom flue gases and air. However, its use in biogas upgrading and evaluation of the economic feasibilityof such adsorbents have not been explored in detail. In this work, by modifying an inert polymericresin (HP2MGL) using PEI, CO2 was separated from biogas. The sorbent exhibited the highest adsorptioncapacity of 2.7 mmolCO2/gads at 30% PEI loading, increasing to 2.9 mmolCO2/gads in the presence of moisture, and remained stable for up to five adsorption–desorption cycles. In situ DRIFTS studies showed thatCO2 adsorption on PEI-impregnated sorbent is consistent with the zwitterion reaction mechanism, andthe sorbent could be regenerated completely at 100 C. The upgrading cost of biogas is primarily dominatedby the operating cost of regeneration and the adsorbent cost. The economic feasibility analysis suggeststhat PEI-impregnated resin sorbent requires less capital and operating costs than conventionalbiogas upgrading technologies. Therefore, PEI-impregnated polymeric resins are promising for CO2 separationfrom biogas.

Dynamic smile reanimation in facial nerve palsy

        Krishnakumar Krishnan Santha,Subin Joseph,Sameer Latheef,Saju Narayanan,Santhy Mohanachandran Nair,Bibilash Babu,Anand Sivadasan,Srivatsa Manjunath Shet,Rajesh Vardhan Pydi,Ajit Pati,Srikant Aruna Sam 대한구강악안면외과학회 2020 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.46 No.2

Objectives: Long-term facial paralysis results in degeneration of the distal nerve segment and atrophy of the supplied muscles. Options for these patients include free muscle transfer, temporalis myoplasty, and botulinum toxin injections for smile reanimation. In this study we aimed to evaluate the subjective and objective outcomes of these procedures. Materials and Methods: In our study, we retrospectively analyzed smile symmetry in patients with facial palsy (n=8) who underwent facial reanimation procedures. Results: Subjective analysis showed high satisfaction in seven out of eight patients. Objective analysis showed statistically significant improvement postoperatively in both vertical and horizontal smile symmetry at rest and during maximum smile (P<0.001). Conclusion: Choosing the ideal procedure for the patients is the most critical aspect for facial reanimation. Though free muscle transfer is considered gold standard procedure, temporalis myoplasty also gives satisfactory results. Residual synkinesis which can lead to disturbing aesthetic deformity can be effectively treated with botulinum toxin.

      • Optimization of Zn2SnO4 thin film by post oxidation of thermally evaporated alternate Sn and Zn metallic multi-layers

        R., Ramarajan,M., Kovendhan,Phan, Duy-Thach,K., Thangaraju,R., Ramesh Babu,Jeon, Ki-Joon,D., Paul Joseph Elsevier 2018 APPLIED SURFACE SCIENCE - Vol.449 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>An attempt to optimize Zn2SnO4 (ZTO) thin film has been done by alternate thermal evaporation of ‘Sn’ and ‘Zn’ in the sequence Sn10/Zn15/Sn15/Zn15/Sn5 onto corning glass substrates and subsequent post oxidation process. The XRD patterns of as-deposited metallic thin films changed over from metallic to oxidized ZTO phase with cubic spinel structure along with ZnO phase. The film thickness and roughness increased apparently due to diffusion of oxygen into the metallic inter-layers. The binding energies estimated from the XPS data also indicated oxidation of the metallic multi-layers. Post-annealing of the film developed transparency in visible region to around 40%. The direct band gap of ZTO and ZnO were estimated to be 3.46 eV and 3.10 eV respectively. The annealed ZTO thin film was measured for electrical transport parameters by Hall Effect measurement. Raman spectrum observed at 668 cm−1 is due to stretching vibration of short metal-oxide bonds in the MO6 octahedron. The photoluminescence spectrum showed blue emission centered around 436 nm predominantly due to oxygen vacancies in addition to weak orange emission centered at 625 nm. Gas sensor using thin films of as-deposited and ZTO formed by post-annealing process showed significant sensing response for NO2 gas. These results reveal that the ZTO thin film deposited by alternate thermal evaporation and subsequent post oxidation is worth exploring as transparent conducting electrode and also as a gas sensing material.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Metallic Sn and Zn were deposited by a newer alternate evaporation in Sn10/Zn15/Sn15/Zn15/Sn5 sequence. </LI> <LI> Upon annealing, metallic multi-layers gets intermixed and oxidized leading to Zn2SnO4 phase. </LI> <LI> Transparency in visible region was around 40% with 3.46 eV direct band gap value. </LI> <LI> The PL emission has a broad asymmetric peak in blue region due to free-to-bound recombination. </LI> <LI> The annealed film has a response/recovery time of 51/107 s for 50 ppm of NO2. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Evaluation and Comparison of the Biopathology of Collagen and Inflammation in the Extracellular Matrix of Oral Epithelial Dysplasias and Inflammatory Fibrous Hyperplasia Using Picrosirius Red Stain and Polarising Microscopy: A Preliminary Study

        Soma Susan Varghese,Sreenivasan Bargavan Sarojini1,Giju Baby George,Sankar Vinod,Philips Mathew,Anulekh Babu,Joseph Sebastian 대한암예방학회 2015 Journal of cancer prevention Vol.20 No.4

Background: The role of tumour inflammation and the dysplastic epithelial-stromal interactions on the nature of collagen fibres in the extracellular matrix of dysplastic epithelium is not fully understood. The present study was aimed to evaluate and compare the inflammation and pathological stromal collagen (loosely packed thin disorganized collagen) present in mild, moderate and severe epithelial dysplasias with that of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasias. The basement membrane intactness of epithelial dysplasias was also evaluated to determine if dysplastic epithelial mesenchymal interaction has any role in the integrity of stromal collagen in epithelial dysplasia. Methods: Oral epithelial dysplasias, inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia and normal oral mucosal samples were used for the study. Packing, thickness and orientation of collagen fibres in mild, moderate and severe grades of oral epithelial dysplasias (n = 24), inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (n = 8) and normal oral mucosal samples (n = 8) were analysed based on the polarisation of collagen fibres in picrosirius red polarising stain under polarising microscope. Results: All the grades of epithelial dysplasias showed greenish yellow birefringence confirming the presence of loosely arranged pathological collagen in the presence of moderate inflammation. All the cases of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia showed red polarisation hue and moderate inflammation. A statistically significant difference was found in the packing and orientation of collagen when epithelial dysplasias and inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia were compared (P < 0.01). When the intactness of basement membrane integrity was compared in all the groups of epithelial dysplasia, a statistically significant result was obtained (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Presence of significant amount of loosely packed thin disoriented collagen even in mild epithelial dysplasia suggests that tumourigenic factors are released to connective tissue stroma much earlier than expected. Hence we suggest considering the integrity of extracellular matrix collagen, intactness of basement membrane and inflammation associated with dysplasia along with the anaplasia of epithelial cells in the microscopic assessment of dysplastic epithelium.
