The 1.06㎛ Neodymium-YAG Laser(800 micron hemisherical) is revealed a useful tool for percutaneous laser disc decompression(PLDD). Especially PLDD would be applied to the management of lumbar disc herniation with minimal intervention. Total irradiated energy to one level of disc space was bout 1000 to 2000 joules. We performed this method at 10 levels, in 7 cases of patients, consisting of 4 males and 3 females with an average age of 37.7 years. Five cases showed excellent and good results, were observed. In two cases, open surgery was required because of unsatisfactory results. The best results were obtained in the protrusion type of disc herniation. We have summarized some advantages of PLDD: a) safe and simple procedure in an outpatient setting, b) avoiding general anesthesia, late spinal instability, c) possibility of repetitive use.
Effect of Gamma Irradiation on the Structural and Physiological Properties of Silk Fibroin

This study was conducted to examine the changes in the molecular structure and physiological activities of silk fibroin by gamma irradiation. The results of gel permeation chromatography and sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the molecular weight of fibroin was increased depending upon the irradiation dose. Secondary structure of fibroin determined by using circular dichroism revealed that the ratio of α-helix was increased up to 10 kGy and then decreased depending upon the irradiation dose. Whereas, the ratio of β-sheet, β-turn, and random coil were decreased and then increased with an alteration in the α-helix secondary conformation. The 2.2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of fibroin was increased by gamma irradiation at 5 kGy, but was decreased above 10 kGy depending upon the irradiation dose. Also, the inhibition activities of tyrosinase and melanin synthesis of fibroin were increased by gamma irradiation. These results indicated that gamma irradiation could be used as an efficient method to make fibroin more suitable for the development of functional foods and cosmetics.

Background: Since all superficial, interconnecting and deep vessels of nevus flammeus, hemangioma and AV malformation proliferate at the dermis and the subcutaneous fat layer, treatment by laser only is demanding, especially for adult patients. To treat hemangiomas located on lips is challenging because of blood pumping during surgery and of difficulty in shaping of lips. Objectives: To treat recalcitrant hemangioma, nevus flammeus and AV malformation for adults more effectively. Methods: 97 cases (male 32, female 65) of nevus flammeus, hemangioma and AV malformation (mostly on the lip) for 10 years are included and investigated. Aforementioned cases were treated using CO<sub>2</sub> laser partial excision with subdermal dissection, coagulation and/or removal of primary, deep vessels by radiofrequency, and pulsed dye laser with long pulse Nd:YAG (Cynergy multiplex), which could penetrate deeper level than 595nm only. Results: These cases of recalcitrant hemangiomas were treated effectively, preserving anatomical shape as much as possible, with the combination treatment concept. Conclusion: By combining CO<sub>2</sub> laser surgery and multiplex laser, hemangiomas and nevus flammeus, that had been known to be difficult to treat, were removed successfully.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Despite recent tremendous progress, targeting of TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) as a cancer therapy has limited success in many clinical trials, in part due to inactivation of death inducing signaling complex (DISC)-mediated caspase-8 signaling cascade in highly malignant tumors such as glioblastoma. In this study, screening of constituents derived from <I>Astilbe rivularis</I> for TRAIL-sensitizing activity identified C-27-carboxylated oleanolic acid derivatives (C27OAs) including 3β-hydroxyolean-12-en-27-oic acid (C27OA-1), 3β,6β,7α-trihydroxyolean-12-en-27-oic acid (C27OA-2), and 3β-<I>trans</I>-<I>p</I>-coumaroyloxy-olean-12-en-27-oic acid (C27OA-3) as novel TRAIL sensitizers. Interestingly, these C27OAs did not affect apoptotic cell death induced by either ligation of other death receptor (DR) types, such as TNF and Fas or DNA damaging agents, which suggests that C27OAs effectively and selectively sensitize TRAIL-mediated caspase-8 activation. Mechanistically, C27OAs upregulate the expression of cell surface DR5 and DISC formation without affecting downstream intracellular apoptosis-related proteins. The upregulation of DR5 expression by C27OAs strictly depends on transactivation of C/EBP homology protein, which is regulated through the p38 MAPK pathway, rather than p53 and intracellular reactive oxygen species status. Taken together, our results identify the novel C27OAs as TRAIL sensitizers targeting the upstream DISC assembly of DR5, and provide a rationale for further development of C27OAs for facilitating TRAIL-based chemotherapy in glioblastoma patients.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
Optimal Design of a RFID Tag Antenna Based on Plane-Wave Incidence

<P>In order to increase the detection range and radar cross section (RCS), the patch shape of a UHF RFID tag antenna is optimized using continuum design sensitivity analysis. To maximize RCS and reflect the practical RFID tag operating condition, the design goal is set considering not only the matching characteristics of the antenna but also the induced voltage at the RFID chip terminal when the plane-wave is incident upon the antenna. The complex impedance of the RFID chip is taken into account by defining a lumped port at the chip location. The design results show that the induced voltage at the chip has increased more than 32% after the optimization.</P>

Glucocorticoids are known to inhibit testicular function, and its receptor is also localized in the Sertoli cells. To evaluate possible role of glucocorticoid in Sertoli cells, the effects of dexamethasone on the expression of androgen binding protein (ABP) have been investigated in primary Sertoli cell cultures. Dexamethasone increased ABP mRNA levels, with maximal stimulation reached at 36 hr. The induction of ABP mRNA was dependent on the low concentration (10^-8 and 10^-7 M) of dexamethasone but gradually reduced in the cells treated with high concentration (10^-6 and 10^-5 M). Dexamethasone-induced ABP mRNA level was no change in the cells after addition of cycloheximide but almost reduced by actinomycin-D pretreatment. Steady-state levels of ABP mRNA gradually increased in the Sertoli cells prepared from 14- and 21-days of age corresponding to rat puberty, and ABP mRNA was induced by dexamethasone. These results suggest that ABP gene is transcriptionally regulated by dexamethasone in primary Sertoli cell cultures. ⓒ 1996 Academic Press, Inc.

<P>In this paper, topology optimization of dielectric material in a 3-D waveguide structure is presented. It is based on material sensitivity formulation in high-frequency domain. To obtain the dielectric distribution in a 3-D waveguide, the pseudo-source term is derived based on the differentiation of the objective function with respect to the electric field, and adjoint system is solved using the pseudo-source. In addition, a modified on/off method is used for complex 3-D model to improve the convergence of the solution. Issues that are encountered when implementing topology optimization with commercial EM software are explained, and their solutions are presented. Also, the duality of the E-field and H-field formulations of the material sensitivity is explored and summarized.</P>
