      • Rank Preservers of Matrices Over Max Algebra

        BAPAT, R. B.,PATI, SUKANTA,SONG, SEOK-ZUN 濟州大學校 基礎科學硏究所 2001 基礎科學硏究 Vol.14 No.2

The max algebra consists of the nonnegative real numbers equipped with two binary operations, maximization and multiplication. We consider the semimodules over max algebra and study the properties of the weak basis and weak dimension of the semi- modules. Moreover, we obtain the characterizations of those linear operators that preserve rank of matrices over max-algebra.

Similarities in Kinetic Energy Distributions of Associative Fragments during Dissociative Ionization of Organic Molecules

Bhas Bapat,Rajesh K. Kushawaha 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.59 No.41

We have performed a study of the formation of H_2^+ and H_3^+ ions during dissociative ionisation of various organic molecules under single collision conditions. The reactions are brought about by electron impact and observed by multiparticle coincidence momentum imaging. We investigate how the presence of certain functional groups in the molecule is reflected in the kinematics of associative reactions.

Therapeutic hypothermia for acute myocardial infarction: a narrative review of evidence from animal and clinical studies

        정기태,Bapat Aneesh,김영국,Hucker William J.,Lee Kichang 대한마취통증의학회 2022 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.75 No.3

Myocardial infarction (MI) is the leading cause of death from coronary heart disease and requires immediate reperfusion therapy with thrombolysis, primary percutaneous coronary intervention, or coronary artery bypass grafting. However, myocardial reperfusion therapy is often accompanied by cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury, which leads to myocardial injury with detrimental consequences. The causes of I/R injury are unclear, but are multifactorial, including free radicals, reactive oxygen species, calcium overload, mitochondria dysfunction, inflammation, and neutrophil-mediated vascular injury. Mild hypothermia has been introduced as one of the potential inhibitors of myocardial I/R injury. Although animal studies have demonstrated that mild hypothermia significantly reduces or delays I/R myocardium damage, human trials have not shown clinical benefits in acute MI (AMI). In addition, the practice of hypothermia treatment is increasing in various fields such as surgical anesthesia and intensive care units. Adequate sedation for anesthetic procedures and protection from body shivering has become essential during therapeutic hypothermia. Therefore, anesthesiologists should be aware of the effects of therapeutic hypothermia on the metabolism of anesthetic drugs. In this paper, we review the existing data on the use of therapeutic hypothermia for AMI in animal models and human clinical trials to better understand the discrepancy between perceived benefits in preclinical animal models and the absence thereof in clinical trials thus far.

A class of accelerated sequential procedures with applications to estimation problems for some distributions useful in reliability theory

Joshi, Neeraj,Bapat, Sudeep R.,Shukla, Ashish Kumar The Korean Statistical Society 2021 Communications for statistical applications and me Vol.28 No.5

This paper deals with developing a general class of accelerated sequential procedures and obtaining the associated second-order approximations for the expected sample size and 'regret' (difference between the risks of the proposed accelerated sequential procedure and the optimum fixed sample size procedure) function. We establish that the estimation problems based on various lifetime distributions can be tackled with the help of the proposed class of accelerated sequential procedures. Extensive simulation analysis is presented in support of the accuracy of our proposed methodology using the Pareto distribution and a real data set on carbon fibers is also analyzed to demonstrate the practical utility. We also provide the brief details of some other inferential problems which can be seen as the applications of the proposed class of accelerated sequential procedures.

Study On the Dynamic Behavior of Unequal Molal Overflow Distillation Columns with an Approach of pseudo Equal Molal Overflow

        HAN,CHANG DAE,Bapat,Ajay 한국화학공학회 1973 Korean Chemical Engineering Research(HWAHAK KONGHA Vol.11 No.1

A study is carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior of distillation columns with unequal molal overflow, both theoretically and experimentally. For the theoretical study, an approach is taken to transform the unequal molal overflow distillation system into a pseudo-equal molal one, which is then used to develop dynamic equations representing unequal molal overflow distillation columns. For the experimental study, the acetone-water binary system is chosen, and the transient response in temperature of a 11-plate bubble cap distillation column to step disturbances in the reflux rate is measured. Comparison of experimental results with theoretical predictions shows that the pseudo-equal molal overflow approach gives a reasonably satisfactroy prediction. which is superior to that made by the dynamic equations based on the as sumption of constant (or equal) molal overflow. The results of the present study therefore indicate the feasibility of extending the pseudo-equal molal overflow approach to multicomponent distillation systems.

How Does Family Succession Impact Family Firms’ Innovation?

Juili Milind Ballal,Varadraj Bapat 아시아기술혁신학회 2019 Asian Journal of Innovation and Policy Vol.8 No.2

Family business is the oldest and the most prevalent type of entity in the world. In India, 85% of the enterprises are owned and/or managed by families, contributing to two-third of GDP. Thus the survival of family firms, which also generates 79% of private sector employment, is of paramount importance. Effective succession planning and innovation to gain competitive edge are the two key ways to ensure family firm survival. In this paper, the interplay between family succession and innovation is qualitatively studied using case study approach. Successors and Predecessors are interviewed to gain insights in the areas of succession planning and innovation. It is observed that family succession has a positive relationship with innovation, i.e. the presence of founding family members in the ownership and/or management of the enterprise has a positive influence on innovation tendency of the family firms. The findings contribute to the family business literature on succession planning and innovation, and their inter-relationship.

Clinical and Radiological Outcomes after Reducing Adult Lytic High-Grade Spondylolisthesis Using a Hybrid Technique: Combination of Percutaneous Pedicle Screws with Midline Microscopic Transforaminal Decompression

Patel Bharat K.,Bapat Mihir R.,Gujral Amandeep 대한척추외과학회 2023 Asian Spine Journal Vol.17 No.6

Study Design: Retrospective study.Purpose: To analyze the results and effectiveness of percutaneous screws (PS) with midline microscopic transforaminal decompression (MTFD) technique in reducing adult stiff lytic high-grade spondylolisthesis (HGSL) and compare it with the conventional technique.Overview of Literature: Pedicle screw cannulation and segmental kyphosis negotiation are surgical challenges in HGSL. Open reduction is the preferred approach. PS have the advantage of optimized trajectory and minimized soft tissue exposure. The role of minimally invasive surgery in HGSL remains unknown. We propose a hybrid technique combining PS with MTFD for lytic HGSL.Methods: This study included 25 patients with adult lytic HGSL (Meyerding grade III and IV) operated using a hybrid technique from 2012 to 2015. Data were compared with retrospective data on conventional open reduction (n=23) operated from 2000 to 2015. The minimum follow-up was 5 years. Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score and modified Oswestry Disability Index (m-ODI). The spinopelvic and perioperative parameters were recorded. The inter-body fusion and adjacent segment degeneration (ASD) were assessed on radiographs at the final follow-up.Results: The average age in the MTFD and open groups was 45.84±12.70 years (nine males and 16 females) and 49.26±13.33 years (eight males and 15 females), respectively. Further, 22 and three patients in the MTFD group and 19 and four in the open group had grade III and IV listhesis, respectively. The MTFD group demonstrated less operative time, blood loss, and hospital stays than the open group. Significant improvements were observed in VAS and m-ODI in subsequent follow-ups in both groups. The MTFD group fared better at 3 months but outcomes were comparable at the final follow-up. Both techniques were equally effective in restoring spinopelvic parameters. The incidence of ASD is comparable. Conclusions: The technique was proven effective in reducing HGSL. The long-term clinical and radiological outcomes were favorable and comparable with the conventional approach.

      • Partial Desiccation of Embryogenic Calli Improves Plant Regeneration in Sugarcane (Saccharum Spp.)

Desai Neetin Shivajirao,Suprasanna Penna,Bapat Viswas Ananat The Korean Society of Plant Biotechnology 2004 Plant molecular biology and biotechnology research Vol.6 No.4

Partial desiccation of embryogenic calli cultures or somatic embryos leads to different physiological changes and maturation of somatic embryos, leading to improved plant regeneration. Embryogenic calli was induced from immature inflorescence segments and young leaf rolls of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum hybrids CoC-671) on Murashige and Skoog's basal medium enriched with different concentrations of 2,4-D ($1-4\;\cal{mg/l}$), L-glutamine ($100\cal{mg/l}$), malt extract ($100\cal{mg/l}$), casein hydrolysate ($1000\;\cal{mg/l}$) and coconut milk ($5\%$) and solidified with $0.2\%$ gel rite. The embryogenic calli were subjected to desiccation for 1-8 h. Desiccation of the calli for 6-7 h resulted in enhancement of plant regeneration frequency ($83-96\%$) as compared to control ($12\%$). Plantlets exhibited vigorous growth to maturity in the greenhouse. Partial desiccation of embryogenic calli offers as a simple method for improving plant regeneration frequency in sugarcane.
