Patterns of Fractured Discourse in Chaucer's Nun's Priest's Tale

As a writer of narrative, Chaucer is an obvious master. In his earlier works, and in almost all of the Canterbury Tales, the narration of events runs smoothly, the sections are usually clearly distinguished and articulated. What we find in the Nun's Priest's Tale (NPT) is conspicuously different and oddly difficult to categorize or explain. There is certainly a clear enough structure to the basic story; by it we are brought from an introduction through suspense to crisis and resolution, Yet we find a repeated pattern of narrative breakdown: points where the text halts, does an abrupt about-turn, and sets off in another, often almost opposite direction. This is in addition to the familar oddness of the Tale: accumulation of material not related to the fundamental structure and the difficulty of pinpointing any clear sense to it all at the end. These "breakdowns" may be considered deliberate fractures in the NPT's discourse, stylistic features to this one tale, although reflected elsewhere, part of its challenge to the interpreter intent on locating the strategy they represent. In order to illustrate what is meant by a "fracture", it seems best to start with the most striking and well-known example, the point where Chauntecleer offers to translate Latin into English for his wife.

Radical Fashion and Radical Fashion Innovation

This is a study of the related concepts of radical fashion and radical fashion innovation. Radical fashions are defined here as those that may never enter the market at all, and exist primarily on runway shows, in exhibitions and in publicityby contrast, radical fashion innovations may be very successful in the marketplace. Radical fashions represent a clear break from the old designs, as opposed to incremental fashions, which are defined as an extension or evolution of the old designs. Using this definition, radical fashion seems to be at odds with the definition of marketable fashion. Nevertheless, while most radical fashions do not enter the market at all and live only in runway shows, exhibitions, and museums, there are many examples of radical fashion innovations successful in the market. Accordingly, a series of questions rise: What is radical fashion? What is radical fashion innovation? What are the differences and similarities between these, and how are they connected? This study seeks to address these questions, using a foundation developed in the radical product innovation literature. Fashion innovations may be in terms form or function, or style, and can be radical(involving the breaking down of old ideas) or incremental (involving the evolution of new ideas from old ideas). We draw from the radical product innovation literature to build two related models. The first is a model of radical fashion and radical fashion innovation that illustrates the components of both concepts. The second is a model of radical fashion innovation diffusion, drawn from the general product innovation diffusion literature, which explores the evolution of and the connections between these two concepts from the beginning (i.e., the radical fashion) to the end (i.e., success in the mass market). Radical fashion may result in designs that are more suitable for the runway, catalogues, or even museum display, than for actual wear. Radical fashion has sometimes been called “new ideas before their marketing phase.” Radical fashion may successfully enter the market, however, and gain wide acceptance among consumers. All rights reserved. cal fashion innovation is not too different from the transitionfrom invention to innovation, which is familiar to researchers in product innovation. Notable in this transition process is the fact that, for many product innovations, what drives the first customers to purchase (the “Visionaries,” to use Moore’s terminology in his “crossing the chasm” model of innovation diffusion) may be very different from what drives the rest of the market (the “Pragmatists.”). If this “chasm” or divide between the two market segments is not recognized, the innovating firm may find that their product stalls during the diffusion process and never effectively reaches the mass market. In the case of fashion products, visionaries (such as celebrities and the fashion press) prime the market and create favorable word of mouthyet, at the same time, less-radical, wearable designs may be seen on the runway, or may be manufactured for the mass market and sold through department stores, specialty clothing stores, or even discounters. The most successful worldwide designers instinctively know this, and can continuously produce radically innovative fashion which also usually transitions to the mass market successfully.

Generalized Net Model of a Student’s Course Evaluation with Intuitionistic Fuzzy Estimations in a Digital University

A generalized net is used to construct a model describing the process of a student’s course evaluation. The model utilizes the theory of intuitionistic fuzzy sets. The model can be used to simulate some processes, related to estimation of students’ background.

Higher-Order Goals, Trust-in-Leader, and Self-Efficacy as Mediators of Transformational Leadership Performance:The Case of Multi-level Marketing Organizations in China

Although former scholarly studies mostly focus on exploring leadership effectiveness under the traditional hierarchical leader-subordinate relationship, the research of leadership performance for non-hierarchical organizational structures, particularly the mediating factors of higher-order goals, trust-in-leader, and self-efficacy have been ignored. This study, therefore, makes an attempt to ascertain the impacts of transformational leadership on the performance of subordinates through the mediating effects of higher-order goals, trust-in-leader, and self-efficacy and the differences of these effects in the context of multi-level marketing (MLM). Like the small-sample studies adopted by Barling, Weber, and Kelloway [1996], Barling, Slater, and Kelloway [2000] and Bass, Avolio, Jung, and Berson [2003], this study adopts a sample of 123 MLM distributors of an MLM company in Hong Kong, with a high response rate of 80.4%. The results indicate that the mediating effect of self-efficacy between transformational leadership and performance is significant under non-hierarchical organizational structures such as MLM in China.

Interference and Throughput in Spectrum Sensing Cognitive Radio Networks using Point Processes

Spectrum sensing is vital for secondary unlicensed nodesto coexist and avoid interference with the primary licensed usersin cognitive wireless networks. In this paper, we develop modelsfor bounding interference levels from secondary network to theprimary nodes within a spectrum sensing framework. Instead ofclassical stochastic approaches where Poisson point processes areused to model transmitters, we consider a more practical modelwhich takes into account the medium access control regulationsand where the secondary Poisson process is judiciously thinned intwo phases to avoid interference with the secondary as well as theprimary nodes. The resulting process will be a modified versionof the Mat´ern point process. For this model, we obtain boundsfor the complementary cumulative distribution function of interferenceand present simulation results which show the developedanalytical bounds are quite tight. Moreover, we use these boundsto find the operation regions of the secondary network such thatthe interference constraint is satisfied on receiving primary nodes. We then obtain theoretical results on the primary and secondarythroughputs and find the throughput limits under the interferenceconstraint.

Analysis of Posture of Japanese Children by Biotonix System

Recently cases concerning children’s posture is on the rise. Teachers of many other schools were also reporting a higher incidence of cases relating to posture. In 2000, Japanese economy newspaper showed 75% of elementary students have some form of posture problems. I see some children in the train these days and their posture is absolutely worse than before when we were kids. Some pediatrics and chiropractors started have started alerting the public about this problem. Actually there is not much data suggesting “children's posture is bad”, we just look at them and realize it. Many people are not too concern about finding a solution to this problem. Professor Kuwaoka from Souzougakuen University, has commented “bad posture makes the backbone warped”, creating various kinds of health problems. An analysis of their poor posture was performed by using a system invented by Biotonix in Canada. As a result, number of bad posture children was actually higher than once thought. Data that was gathered, suggests most children would continue having problems with their posture after the age of 9. 10 kids are receiving chiropractic adjustments now, although our research is far from completed, visual inspection showed their postures were improving. We conducted a follow up survey on 7 children out of 60 kids of different ages, but research needs to be conducted proof the details. A study comparing two groups, one group receiving chiropractic adjustments and the other not receiving chiropractic adjustments is scheduled for the future.

Determining the effectiveness of Small-Sided Football (SSF) implementation in metropolitan Association Football

The aim of this research was to assess and analyse a large group of practicing coaches’ perceptions of Small-Sided Football (SSF), a modified games-based training and playing format, and whether its implementation throughout the grassroots of Australian Association Football has been effective. A survey was developed and completed by 127 coaches based in the Sydney metropolitan area. The demographic and psychometric data collected indicated that the governing body, Football Federation Australia (FFA), has effectively implemented SSF across the board. This study has shown that more work could be done in the areas of education and training, and the issue of winning versus development. Coaches indicated support of FFA’s philosophy and implementation of SSF, and are willing to adapt and implement the curriculum together with promotion and support of club administrators.
