Carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes were synthesized by the pyrolysis of polymeric precursors. The CMS materials had oxygen-nitrogen selectivities much higher than those observed for the polymeric precursors. Typically molecular sieving materials have diffusion selectivities much higher than polymeric materials. This has been identified as a result of higher entropic selectivity of the molecular sieving materials. A study of the development of molecular sieving properties as the polymeric precursor is pyrolyzed into a CMS material will offer us an insight into polymeric molecular structures needed for enhanced entropic selectivity membrane materials.
Peptide Enriched Functional Food Adjunct from Soy Whey: A Statistical Optimization Study

Soy whey is generated as a process waste while preparing soy based food products tofu, causing environmental pollution and also representing an economic penalty against the industrial process. Therefore, its valorization is of prime importance to the industry. The present investigation aims to convert this proteinaceous waste into bioactive peptide enriched hydrolysate. Soy whey protein was enzymatically treated with the Aspergillus awamori nakazawa protease. Respective protease was efficient to produce antioxidant peptide beholding radical scavenging ability of 40-50% at normal conditions. Remarkable increase in the radical scavenging activity upto 70% was noticed at the response surface methodology (RSM) based optimized condition: temperature 40oC, salt concentration (NaCl) 0.05 M, surfactant concentration (Triton-X 100) 0.0075%, hydrolysis time 80 min, and enzyme to substrate concentration 164 IU/g of soy whey protein. The present study emphasizes the biotransformation of proteineceous waste into antioxidant peptide rich soy whey protein hydrolysate to be considered as additives for food preparation and formulation.

Osteochondral Lesion in Diffuse Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis of the Knee

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign condition that is locally aggressive and may destructively invade the surrounding soft tissues and bone causing functional loss of the joint and the limb. The knee is the most affected joint (range, 28% to 70%) but involvement of the bone is not a common feature seen at this site. We present a rare case of diffuse PVNS of the knee associated with subchondral cyst of the lateral femoral condyle. This posed a diagnostic dilemma because of bone invasion. The radiological image of synovitis was pathognomonic of PVNS but etiology of the osteolytic lesion was confirmed only on histopathology. The large osteochondral defect was eventually managed in a staged manner with bone grafting and osteochondral autograft transfer.

Background: Levobupivacaine is an attractive alternative to racemic bupivacaine for spinal anesthesia due to the lower potential for cardio-toxicity and faster recovery profile. This study was designed to compare isobaric levobupivacaine with hyperbaric racemic bupivacaine with respect to intraoperative quality of anesthesia and the postoperative recovery profile in patients undergoing inguinal hernia surgery. Methods: A total of 100 American Society of Anesthesiologists 1 and 2 patients, aged 18–60 years, undergoing elective daycare unilateral inguinal hernia surgery, were randomized into two groups. Group L received spinal anesthesia with 3 ml of 0.5% plain levobupivacaine. Group B received 3 ml of 0.5% hyperbaric racemic bupivacaine. Quality of anesthesia, sensory and motor block characteristics, duration of effective analgesia, time to mobilization, and incidence of side effects were compared. Results: The quality of anesthesia was comparable between the two groups. No difference was observed in the block onset time or maximum block height. The duration of anesthesia was significantly shorter in group L compared with that in group B (206.2 ± 18.9 min vs. 224.1 ± 15.6 min, P < 0.001), as was duration of motor block (185.9 ± 20.3 min vs. 196.4 ± 21.2 min, P = 0.016) and time to walk unaided (321.9 ± 19.2 min vs. 356.7 ± 26.6 min, P < 0.001). The incidence of hypotension was less in group L (12%) compared to group B (32%) (P = 0.028). Conclusions: Levobupivacaine is an effective alternative to bupivacaine for patients undergoing unilateral inguinal hernia surgery. It has a shorter duration of sensory and motor block, allowing earlier mobilization in daycare surgeries, and a lower incidence of intraoperative hypotension.
Treating the Unexpected-Middle Mesial Canal: A Case Series

The primary objective of endodontic therapy is to achieve a three-dimensional obturation of the root canal space after adequate preparation of the canal space to remove the tissue debris, microorganisms, and their byproducts. Anatomical variations have frequently been encountered in endodontic practice and have to be adequately managed by the clinician. Missed roots and canals are a major reason for failure of therapy. Technological advances have given the clinician ample opportunity to identify and treat these aberrations successfully. The present paper describes two cases of mandibular second permanent molar requiring root canal treatment, found to have three separate canals in the mesial root. These cases demonstrates a rare anatomical configuration and emphasizes the need for the clinician to be aware of and look out for such variations and use adequate diagnostic methodologies prior to and during therapy to detect such variations. The possibility of additional canals, whenever in doubt, should be explored with the assistance of technologies such as those of magnification and illumination and various diagnostic aids. Operator experience has also shown to be a key factor in negotiation and management of these aberrant canal configurations.

The rumen parasite, Gastrothylax crumenifer (Platyhelminthes: Gastrothylacidae), is a highly pathogenic trematode parasite of goat (Capra hircus). It sucks blood that causes acute disease like anemia, and severe economic losses occur due to morbidity and mortality of the ruminant infected by these worms. The study of these rumen paramphistomes, their infection, and public health importance remains unclear in India especially in the western part of state Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), Meerut, India, where the goat meat consumption is very high. This paper provides the molecular characterization of G. crumenifer recovered from the rumen of Capra hircus from Meerut, U.P., India by the partial sequence of 28S rDNA. Nucleotide sequence similarity searching on BLAST of 28S rDNA from parasites showed the highest identity with those of G. crumenifer from the same host Capra hircus. This is the first report of molecular identification of G. crumenifer from this part of India.
